2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor I am writing this article from the quadrangle of the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 where I am sitting in anticipation of the arrival of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. I feel very fortunate to have been invited to participate in this historic apostolic journey. I am attending the Canonization Mass of Father Junipero Serra at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Father Serra's canonization is the first to occur on American soil. It will take place outside the great Basilica under a beautiful sunny sky and very pleasant temperatures. I often came to this Basilica for the Church s great liturgies during my years on the staff of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, but never for an event quite like this. Before the Canonization Mass, there is a reception in Caldwell Hall, which is immediately adjacent to the site of the Mass. Many the hours I spent in the classrooms and study halls of this building. Today it s a very happy and hospitable place to have a sandwich and a cup of coffee. This is a welcome accommodation since so many of us have come great distances to greet our Holy Father and attend Mass with him. I have happily run into several old friends and former colleagues who are also here for this historic event. Now we have been escorted to our places and will wait for the Holy Father s arrival at this enormous shrine to the Blessed Mother under her title of the Immaculate Conception a Basilica that shares much in common with our own Basilica to the Queen of All Saints back home in Chicago. As the ministers of the Mass arrive, the Holy Father smiles warmly and waves to the thousands of pilgrims who have come to greet him. He is brown from his time in the sun and it suits him well. He looks vigorous and impressed with the size and enthusiasm of the crowds. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State flank him on either side. Hundreds of other bishops accompany him as well. From my vantage point, the assembly seems representative of all ethnic backgrounds and cultures. All are smiling and waving at the Holy Father and taking pictures of him with their cell phones. The Canonization Mass features reading in Chochenyo, a Native American language and Prayers of the Faithful in an additional six different languages, including Igbo, another Native American language. After Cardinal Wuerl makes the formal request for the canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra, the Litany of the Saints is beautifully sung and highlights many of the American saints, including Isaac Jogues, Andre Besset, Elizabeth Ann Seton, John Neumann, Katherine Drexel, Kateri Tekawitha, Damien de Veuster and, of course, our own Frances Xavier Cabrini. While the Litany is being sung, Native Americans from several tribes bear the relics of now Saint Junipero Serra forward and place them in the sanctuary. The presence of so many members of various Native American nations and tribes in their ceremonial dress gives eloquent testimony to the reverence and devotion so many show toward Father Serra, and the joy they are experiencing at his canonization. In his homily Pope Francis presented a compelling meditation on Father Serra s personal motto: siempre adelante, always forward. That motto echoes the central mission of the Universal Church to proclaim the gospel to all nations. The dynamism of the gospel message naturally seeks to move forward, outward toward those who have not yet heard or understood it. It is the essence of the Church s mission to follow the command of Christ, to go out to all the world, baptize and make disciples of all the nations. This challenge motivated Father Serra in his missionary work and still propels the Church forward in the great project of this new millennium of Christianity: the New Evangelization. Siempre adelante.

3 I have had the great good fortune over the years to attend several papal liturgies some before massive crowds, like the five million in Manila, and some in the pope s private chapel and I always come away with the same sense. There is something formative, informative and even transformative that occurs when a person is simply in the presence of the successor of Peter. For me this has been true since I first saw Pope Paul VI in Saint Peter s Basilica in 1975 through this most recent experience of Pope Francis in Washington forty years later. There is something genuinely transcendent attached to an encounter with the Vicar of Christ on Earth. For a few moments one is part of both this world and the next. Viva il Papa. Monsignor John Pollard Religious Education News This year s Religious Education classes have begun, and the bustle of the start is beginning to settle. 6 Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of life. Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of fear, pain, and suffering. Give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Every Life is Worth Living, 2015, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington DC. All rights reserved. 11 f tewardship Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Queen of All Saints Basilica Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 4, 2015 We are stewards of our relationships. In today s Gospel Jesus teaches us about the sacredness of marriage; a covenant that is a gift from God. Our relationships with our spouses, family, friends, coworkers, and those in our community of faith are all gifts from God. Jesus reminds us today that it is the hardened heart that damages or breaks up relationships. Good stewards understand the holiness of relationships and pray for the love, patience, understanding and kindness necessary to sustain those relationships. Let s take time out to prayerfully reflect on our relationships this week. Is our stewardship of these relationships as God intended? What relationships need to be healed and reconciled? International Catholic Stewardship Council Please consider how our parish needs and your capacity to give your time, talents and treasure can combine to make a true and lasting benefit for our parish. So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. (Genesis 2:19) The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations. Our Weekly Stewardship for September 20, 2015 Actual to Prior Year Actual to Budget YTD Week $26,892 $307,083 Last Year $25,241 $299,954 Difference $1,651 $7,129 YTD Week $26,892 $307,083 Weekly Budget $27,675 $332,100 Difference ($783) ($25,071) For safe and convenient giving please consider Give Central.
