2 From the Pastor Next Friday our nation marks the anniversary of our independence, our freedom from oppressive governance. And, again this year, the Catholic Bishops of the United States are asking all people of good will to mark a Fortnight for Freedom. You will be seeing several references to this Fortnight for Freedom in our parish bulletin over the next few weeks. This seems an appropriate time to reflect for a few minutes on the meaning of freedom within the Christian context. The Declaration of Independence makes the historic assertion: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These words illuminate the founding principles of the United States. The rights they affirm come from God. They do not derive from kings or presidents, decrees or edicts, charters or laws. The democracy of the United States of America is founded on these rights; and over the two centuries of this nation s existence, the right to freedom has especially embedded itself most deeply in our national consciousness. In our own day, this right to liberty is sometimes in danger of becoming distorted into a right detached from responsibilities and of expressing itself in an unconditional right to individual freedom of choice and an exaggerated right to privacy. This is the context in which American people hear St. Paul s powerful words in his letter to the Galatians: For freedom Christ has set us free. So stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. What kind of freedom is this? In a nutshell, the kind of freedom to which St. Paul refers is the freedom to do what we ought, not the freedom to do whatever we want. It is the freedom to do what our best nature, our redeemed nature, is eager to do. The exercise of freedom does not imply a right to say or do anything. It is false to maintain that human beings, even though we are the subjects of our own freedom, are fully selfsufficient and are ultimately satisfied when our own personal goods are served. We are better than that. Authentic human freedom attains perfection in its acts when they are directed toward God, the sovereign good. Some people have the perception that to follow Christ is a kind of enslavement. They commonly think of Catholics as people who have to follow a lot of rules and regulation, a set of beliefs, a catalogue of doctrines, a code of ethics. While Catholic people do hold certain beliefs, express those beliefs in doctrines and try to live those beliefs according to principles of morality, fundamentally Catholic people agree to be united with the person of Jesus Christ. This relationship underpins belief, doctrine and morality. Because we are united to Christ in baptism, we experience a kind of freedom that cannot be understood apart from faith. The struggle for genuine freedom is a part of every Christian life. As faith matures, it becomes clearer that we do not practice our beliefs out of a sense of obligation to God, but rather out of a relationship with Christ. We do not adhere to beliefs, doctrines and a moral code because we have to, but because such adherence is the free response in faith to the one who has freely given us the gift of life and the gift of eternal salvation. Accepting such gifts given out of love does not create in the recipient an obligation to reciprocate. It creates an eagerness to respond in love. 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

3 We were created by God with free will and mastery over our lives. By the exercise of our free will we shape our own lives. We can either choose the good or choose evil. The fact that we can choose at all characterizes properly human acts. Through the acts of our free will we either receive praise or blame, merit or reproach. But the more one chooses the good, the freer one becomes because there is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to what St. Paul calls the slavery of sin. Authentic human freedom is not license; it is not merely independence; it is not even liberation. In the final analysis, human freedom is not freedom from anything, but freedom for something: freedom for life in Christ. This is the freedom for which Christ has set us free. As we take time out to celebrate our nation s liberty by gathering with family and friends, let us not forget that there is a deeper notion of human freedom than the one commonly understood in our contemporary society. God created each one of us to be free. He sustains us with his grace so that we might, of our own accord, seek him and attain communion with him. God bless you. Simply download all forms and bring them to the RE Office. Families are asked to pay a minimum of $75 at the time of registration. Since this is the Year of Strong Catholic Parents, we are hoping that many of you would consider volunteering in the program. I promise you that your rewards will be great. We are in need of some very special volunteers to teach the faith. There are openings in grades for both the Sunday morning classes as well as Tuesday afternoon. If you are interested in knowing more about these opportunities, please call Aline at (773) for details. SonTreasure Island Once again VBS has sailed into history, but will return next year. This camp was one of the best yet. It takes many people to make the experience happen. I would like to thank the Adult Core Team for dedicating a week of their time for this year s camp. They are: Janet Dugan, Kathleen Murray, Coleen Martin, Kim Riley, Liz Adamczyk, Michelle Ramirez, Nettie Barlaan, Kristen Cronin, and Jenny Hester. Several young adults of the parish returned to add their expertise along with training peer minters from QAS Youth Group. Thank you all for your help and your time. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM. Please come into the rectory to schedule the baptism for your child. Prior to the baptism, the parents are invited to attend a baptismal preparation session. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.
