2 The Catholic Church in the United States sets one Sunday a year aside to highlight and celebrate the teaching ministry of Jesus Christ. Ever since St. Paul zealously proclaimed the message of Jesus Christ in the first century, Christians have called that teaching ministry catechesis. Catechesis is a strange word, but its meaning is anything but foreign to the life of the Church. It is the center of the Church s educational mission. Catechesis is the term used to describe all the Church s efforts to make disciples, to help people believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, to educate and instruct them about Christ, to form them in Christ s image and build up his body, the Church. Catechesis is an education in the faith for adults, young people and children which includes the teaching of Christian doctrine in a systematic and organic way that invites them into the fulness of Christian life. Today the Church marks Catechetical Sunday. This year s theme is Teaching about God s Gift of Forgiveness. Catechesis is a shared but differentiated responsibility. Through their witness to the faith, all members of the community of believers in Jesus Christ participate in the Church s catechetical mission. Some are called to more specific catechetical roles. Parents, parish catechists, teachers, Catholic school principals, parish catechetical leaders, deacons, priests and bishops are all catechists with distinctive roles. From the earliest days of the Church catechists have made and continue to make an outstanding and indispensable contribution to the spread of the faith and of the Church. They are the esteemed agents of the Church s educational ministry. They perform the fundamental service of the proclamation of the Gospel. This Catechetical Sunday I want to pay special tribute to our parish catechists and the teachers in our school and express the gratitude of the whole parish to them. Today they will be formally delegated, commissioned and sent forth to do the work of catechesis, that is, to hand on the Catholic faith to the next generation. I am especially grateful to Aline Reynolds, our parish director of religious education, and to all the volunteer catechists who bring the person of Jesus Christ and the content of his message to the children and young people who attend the public schools in our community. I admire their dedication to their vocation as catechists and their fidelity to Christ and his Church. I am equally grateful to Pete Tantillo, the principal of our parish school, and to all the teachers who so generously share the Catholic faith with the children in our parish school. I am also indebted to Father Simon and the members of our adult catechumenate team who work with those from our parish seeking to become Catholics or to be fully initiated into the Church. Also the whole parish joins me in thanking Kim Riley, our youth minister, and the members of her board of advisors, Sandy Dilla-Hammer, the catechists and special friends in our SPRED program, and Pat Nobel and Susan Whalen and the catechists of the Children s Liturgy of the Word. All believers have a right to catechesis, and it is my duty as pastor of Queen of All Saints Basilica to see to it that sound catechesis is provided for them. I take that solemn responsibility very seriously. I have been a catechist of one kind or another since I was fifteen years old, but I obviously cannot do it all myself. I depend on the generous women and men of our parish and school to open the door of faith for the many children, young people and adults in our parish catechetical programs. I am confident that my trust in them is well placed. God bless them. 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor Monsignor John Pollard
