2 This Sunday the Queen of All Saints Music of the Masters Concert Series continues with a presentation of the Music of Mozart at 3:30PM. The Queen of All Saints Basilica Choir will be joined by the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra for two beautiful choral classics, the Solemn Vespers and the Ave Verum Corpus, and Mozart s Symphony No. 40 in g minor. Here at Queens we experience such an abundance of superb quality sacred music that we can easily take such excellence for granted. We are very fortunate to have the great richness of the Church s tradition of sacred music woven so deeply and consistently into the fabric of our liturgical life. We all owe a debt of gratitude for this to Dr. Ken Sotak, Paul Scavone, and the singers and instrumentalists of the Basilica choir. While they sparkle on special occasions, like this Sunday s concert, it s their week in and week out dedication to excellence in liturgical music that I most appreciate. They provide the leadership for the rest of us, especially in gently reminding us of our individual responsibilities to participate in the Mass by joining the other members of the assembly in singing the hymns and the Mass parts. That s what I d like to address myself to in this article. One of the fundamental themes developed in several of the documents of the Second Vatican Council was the full and active participation of all the faithful in the life of the Church. One important aspect of that full and active participation is the involvement of every member of the liturgical assembly at Mass. Going to Mass is not like going to a movie or a concert, and it s certainly not like watching television. These are basically passive experiences. We simply sit and listen, or sit and watch, while someone else performs. This posture might be appropriate for entertainment experiences, but it s not appropriate for liturgy. We are supposed to be involved in the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy, not passive bystanders in its drama. It s unfortunate that we spend so much free time allowing ourselves to be entertained that subconsciously many come to Mass and, out of habit, have the same expectations of the Mass as they have of David Letterman or Jay Leno. We sit back and expect to be entertained. Minimally, all members of the liturgical assembly (everyone in church at Mass) are supposed to make the verbal responses enthusiastically throughout the Mass, actively listen to the proclamation of the Word of God, witness their faith by a confident recitation of the Creed, confirm their membership in the Body of Christ by receiving Holy Communion and sing the hymns and designated Mass parts. It is this last mode of full and active participation that I want to underscore today. Ordinarily the hymns and Mass parts that are sung during the Sunday Eucharistic liturgy are supposed to be sung by the whole congregation, not just by a cantor or a choir. We have such good and familiar cantors here at Queen of All Saints, especially Paul Scavone, that I suppose it s easy to be tempted to sit back and simply listen to them. That s wrong. The cantors are there to lead the congregation, not sing to us. They are not soloists; their responsibility is to encourage us to join them in singing, not admire what nice voices they have. There is a time for soloists, but not during the congregation s parts. Neither does the choir supplant the congregation in singing the hymns and Mass parts. As good as our choirs are, they are not entertainers. There are times when the choir will sing a particular selection by themselves without the participation of the congregation, but these are relatively few in number. 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor

3 This brings me to the role of the congregation in singing at Mass. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the document which governs the celebration of the Eucharist, says, It is most appropriate that Sunday Masses be celebrated with singing, especially with the full participation of all members of the community. (#114) That means when the cantor announces the hymn number, we should all pick up our hymn books, find the page and sing as best we can. Even as we learn to sing better, we can participate by reading along with the text. Sometimes when parishioners return from summer vacations, they tell me they went to Mass in a church along the way and report that the singing was wonderful. Everybody sang, they would say. I always respond by asking them if they sing when they come to Mass at the Basilica. They usually respond by saying yes they do, but the people around them don t, so they get discouraged. I guess we re the people around them, so I am asking all those who come to Sunday Mass at Queen of All Saints Basilica at least to make an attempt to sing the hymns and designated Mass parts. We don t want to be the ones who discourage the others. And besides, remember what Saint Augustine said, He who sings prays twice. God bless you. Don t forget to also check out the link on the Archdiocesan website Flock Notes Monsignor John Pollard Confirmation Enrollment Mass On Saturday, November 16 th at 5PM, the Confirmation candidates will meet with their families declaring their intent to prayerfully prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. They will present covenants to the presider that have signed and witnessed by their parents. In exchange, they will receive a pin as a sign to all that they are actively preparing for this sacrament of initiation. All attending are asked to pray for these candidates and their families by taking home a bookmark of all the names of the candidates. Mass for Veterans and the Military We are the land of the free because we have been and continue to be the home of the brave. Our veterans of military service are the brave among us and we want to pray with them and those on active duty. Veterans of Military service and their families, as well as the families of soldiers currently serving in the military will be honored at a special Mass today at 11:00am Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time November 10,

Each year, QASPA provides the opportunity for families to purchase an Advent Wreath Kit with live evergreen boughs and candles. Families can either pick up the kits to take home, or stay for an Advent Wreath Assembly Party. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM. Please come into the rectory to schedule the baptism for your child. Prior to the baptism, the parents are invited to attend a baptismal preparation session. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.
