2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor A few years ago some of the parents of the children preparing for First Communion thought it would be a good idea to gather all the parents from both the parish school and the parish religious education program so they could meet one another. This was part of a broader initiative to bring the school families and religious education families of the parish closer together. This is one of the developments in parish life of which I am most proud. Harmony among school and religious education families is a sign of a strong and healthy parish. A few weeks ago all the parents of our First Communicants were invited to one religious education family s lovely home and yard. It was a little cool outside, but thanks to a Men s Club a few gas heaters were brought in to provide some warmth. Most couples brought something to eat or drink, so it was not too much of a burden for anyone. It was a truly pleasant evening. I met several couples new to the parish, but more importantly couples with children in our school met couples with children in our religious education program. And all of this was occasioned because their children are preparing for First Communion. Then last Sunday many of those same parents came to the 9:30 Mass which was organized by the Queen of All Saints Parish Parents Association especially for the second graders. Their presence swelled the number of people who ordinarily come to the 9:30 Mass on Sunday by almost 200. It was heartwarming to see so many parents bringing their children to Mass. The children as usual in family Masses take up several roles in the liturgy. The moms do a great job of preparing the children and keeping them focused, but there s always a certain amount of chaos. How can there not be when so many second graders are involved? At the time of the homily, the children come up into the sanctuary and sit on the floor so that they can be close to the homilist. The homilist speaks directly to them, but the others at the Mass seem to appreciate whatever message he shares with the children just as much as they do. Last Sunday in the shape of a heart the children colored the theme of the gospel message: God is love. That gave me the opportunity to ask the children to name some of the signs by which they know God loves them. They responded by listing parents, grandparents, pets, their homes and their friends. They are all signs that God loves them. Then I asked how in return do they show their love for God. They gave many examples, but in summary they said that they show their love for God by being good boys and girls and by praying. Of course, they are exactly right. In the gospel for last Sunday Jesus responded to the question of a lawyer by saying to love God above all things and to love one s neighbor as oneself. I think they adapted that message of the gospel very well. Being good boys and girls works itself out in the ordinary events of everyday life as loving one s neighbor as oneself. Prayer, of course, acknowledges the existence and presence of God even as it expresses our dependence on his loving providence. The children did not use those grown-up words in response to my questions, but they got the message of the gospel and expressed it in their own language. This is just another example of the good things that happen when families come to Mass together. The children will not always have special parts to play in the Mass, but there will always be something for them to give and something for them to receive when they come to Mass. They receive God s love and they have the opportunity to give their love to him in return. This exchange between God and the children has special significance in this year of their preparation for and reception of First Communion.

3 I know how hard it is to get a young family up, fed, dressed and ready for Mass on Sunday, but I hope the parents of our second graders know it s worth the effort. It would be easy to say, It s just too hard the get the kids there on time. For what it s worth, I want to encourage all parents of young children to make the effort. There is so much crowding the lives of even young children that an hour at Mass may seem too difficult for some. I would just ask the parents to remember that the children themselves said that one way they show their love for God is to pray. Sunday Mass is the whole Church s weekly prayer of thanks and praise to God. Our children are an important part of the Church. Why not make sure they have the opportunity to join their family, their friends and their neighbors in showing their love for God at Sunday Mass? God bless you. 6 From Monsignor Prist From now on you will be seeing me celebrating daily and Sunday Masses with you. I am delighted to be back. You know that over the past few years I had accepted a number of Archdiocesan responsibilities. Recently I retired from all of them. Then on September 10th I had a total right knee replacement. It has taken weeks of rehabilitation in physical therapy to get back to standing, walking, and driving. I want to thank so many who have offered encouragement, assistance, cards, gifts, prayers and that constant thoughtfulness that is so characteristic of Queen of All Saints, especially with thanks to Msgr. Pollard. 6 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

8 18 years at the Food Pantry! The Albany Park Community Center Food Pantry is celebrating our 18 th anniversary this November. We opened on November 15, This started as a cooperative effort between Queen of All Saints Parish and the Albany Park Community Center. The Food Pantry is an entirely volunteer run operation. As many as 35 parishioners are involved every week. Currently we serve approximately families each month. In fiscal , we served 5,425 families which included 17,466 people. We distributed about 165,192 pounds of food. Our cost was about $2.00 per family. Each family gets at least 5 bags of food which includes meat, fresh produce, bread, canned goods and staples such as rice, pasta and beans. Please consider volunteering. There are many opportunities. See below for dates and times. The area we serve is the most diverse in the city. About 57% of the people we serve are either senior citizens or children. They are very grateful for the help we can give them. Last month, a client handed me an envelope with the word Tithe on it. Inside was $1.60. The client said It s not much but it s all I can afford. 11 f tewardship Committed to Christ, Queen of All Saints Basilica sharing God's gifts, building the Church together What is Stewardship? Stewardship is a way of life, a life of accountability and responsibility acknowledging God as Creator and Giver of all. Stewardship involves responsible management of our God-given resources of time, talent, and treasure. Stewards as disciples of Jesus Christ see themselves as caretakers of all God's gifts. Gratitude for these gifts is expressed in prayer, worship, offering and action by eagerly sharing our gifts out of love for God and one another. Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. Stewardship is not just a program, or a method of fundraising, it is a way of thanking God for all His blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure we have each received. Reflections on Stewardship... Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones. - Wisdom of Solomon 3:9 Here s the ironic thing about people who are generous. Those that give freely and cheerfully do not do it to be rewarded. They do it to show their love for God and their neighbors. Yet, because of their generosity, they typically are given more than they gave away!
