2 From the Pastor When I arrived at Queen of All Saints almost eight years ago, I was surprised to learn that there was nothing on the beautiful parish campus bearing the name of Monsignor Francis Dolan. Having been pastor here for thirty-five years and the architect of the vision that we now know as Queen of All Saints Basilica and Parish, it was not unreasonable to think that he may have been honored is some tangible way. There is a striking oil on canvas portrait of Monsignor Dolan in the school and a very impressive photograph of him that hangs in the pastors gallery in the reception room of the rectory, but no other acknowledgment of his remarkable tenure and leadership. After doing some further research, however, I discovered that a large meeting room in the Sauganash Park Field House is named the Monsignor Francis Dolan Room. It s quite a testimony to him to be recognized in this way by the civic community. I felt the same way about another man who preceded me as pastor in another parish, Saint Joseph in Wilmette. Father William Netstrater was not the founding pastor of Saint Joseph s, but he served as pastor there for 51 years. He rode out there on horseback and built not only the parish, but the village that at the time was known as Gross Point. He was born in Trier, Germany and so he named both the township he mapped out and the high school he founded New Trier. Both entities exist and thrive today. Father Netstrater also served as mayor of Gross Point, a trustee of New Trier Township and the chairman of the Board of New Trier High School for many years. He even developed the concept and ceded the land for Memorial Park Cemetery, one of the first planned interfaith cemeteries in the United States. Although his accomplishments were truly remarkable, there is not so much as a street, park or building named after him. One of the last things I did at Saint Joseph s before coming to Queens was to serve on a civic committee that was trying to find a suitable memorial in the village. The likes of Father Netstrater and Monsignor Dolan are not only rare today, but term limits for pastors ensure that such figures will never rise again. Archdiocesan policy prohibits fifty and thirty-five year pastorates from happening anymore and long tenures would seem to be requirements for achievements of such momentous proportions. But I m very happy to call your attention to the new honorary street signs that are affixed to the light poles on the corners of Sauganash and Lemont Avenues and Sauganash and Keene Avenues. They read Monsignor Francis Dolan Drive. Now parishioners spill out the front doors of the Basilica onto Monsignor Dolan Drive. Now, when the weather permits, the children cross Monsignor Dolan drive for gym class as well as for football, soccer, lacrosse, flag football and family outings. Now the southern boundary of the Field of Dreams is Monsignor Dolan Drive. Thanks to the work of some parishioners, friends of long-time neighbor Frank Koza, Alderman Laurino and her staff, the street was dedicated last Saturday in the presence of several members of Monsignor Dolan s family. The brief ceremony brought tears to the eyes of Monsignor Dolan s niece. After Alderman Laurino welcomed everyone and I gave a brief invocation, John Conway, parish archivist, summarized the truly significant legacy Monsignor Dolan has left to the people of 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

3 this wonderful parish. The next day I invited the present members of the Queen of All Saints School Student Council to unveil the new sign. I want to thank Frank Fowler, Mike Mullen, Katie Collins, Emmet Jeske, Adrian Isidoro, Mari Ramos, Molly Ryan and Kristin Uremovic for their participation. Having the children do this seemed a proper way for the future to honor the past and to ensure that the traditions of this community of faith are handed from generation to generation. God bless you. 8 Parish News Queen of All Saints Women s Spiritual Spa Day *** Thursday, November 9th, 2017 Communion, Conversation and Solidarity: How the history and treatment of migration in the Catholic tradition can inspire our Lives By: Elizabeth Collier, PhD. Migration is a central image and reality throughout our Scripture and tradition. The Catholic Church has ministries to people who are on the move for any reason. There are important powerful images, themes and teachings on migration from the Old Testament to recent pastoral letters. Elizabeth Collier, Phd. is a Christopher Chair and Professor of Business Ethics at the Brennan School of Business at Dominican University in River Forest, with a research focus on business ethics, immigration, and Catholic social teaching. She is on the advisory board for the Archdiocese of Chicago s Immigration Ministry and secretary of the North American Chapter of the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education Initiative. It was an amazing day filled with music, inspirational speakers, Eucharistic adoration, prayer, and Mass celebrated by Cardinal Cupich. In total, 7,500 Catholic junior high kids were filled with a holy fire that set them ablaze with the love of Christ. With a holy fire burning inside them they have been sent out to be the light of the world. A Confirmation parent and candidate meeting will take place on November 1st at 6:30 in the gymnasium. All parents and their confirmation candidates should attend this meeting. Religious Education classes will resume on November 5th and 7th. 11 f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 29, 2017 You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. MATTHEW 22:37 Do we put other gods before God? Is our love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than our love for God? Do we really recognize that everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God? The good news it s not too late to put God first in our life in all things. Planned Giving Gifts of Appreciated Securities Gains in the stock market the last several years, including over 15% this year and almost 80% over the last 5 years, have left many stocks at an all time high. Those who are fortunate to have participated in these gains now have an excellent opportunity to maximize their charitable giving in a tax-efficient way. Transfers of appreciated securities allow a donor to make a gift without paying capital gains tax on their gains, thereby increasing both the amount of their gift and the amount of their charitable deduction. If you are able, please consider this option for your year-end giving. Please contact the parish business office at for further information. Thoughts on Christian Stewardship Living in Gratitude. Christian stewardship is the commitment made in response to God s generosity: to live a life of gratitude and to share oneself and one s gifts generously as circumstances and talents allow. God has endowed His followers with more gifts than they can imaginelife and faith, time and relationships, health, talents, skills and material wealth. Everything one has is a gift from God, and a good steward thanks God daily for these blessings. October 9 to 15, 2017 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $19, Loose Donation $3, n/a Elect. Giving $7, Total $29, YTD Total $419, Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. Our Ceiling Status We hope you ve had a chance to read Monsignor Pollard s status reports on the Basilica ceiling and to catch just a partial glimpse of our new Basilica ceiling. We hope you are as excited as we are to see the fruits of our careful planning and the superb workmanship of our contractor crew. Thanks to all for your outstanding patience as we continue this very major project. Sharing Gifts. As Christians we recognize that our gifts of talents and skills are meant to be cultivated and shared with others, beginning with our family and friends, with those whom we gather to share the Eucharist and with the world. Sharing the gift of ourselves blesses our family of faith and blesses those whom that family hopes to touch. As Saint Peter teaches: As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace, each in the measure he has received. This has been a once in a lifetime chance to do it right and, as careful and prudent stewards of our parish resources, we promise that your faithful support and continued attendance at Mass despite the inconvenience will be rewarded when the results of the project are revealed! If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29,
