MEETNG OF LHUE CUUC MEMBERS A novel and most delghtful affar was the dnne for members of the Lhue Uuor Church at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lydgate on Tuesday evenng last. A long table was extemporzed for the occason, and 24 members sat down to a delcous dnner, fndng ther places by a sort of place card of duplcate flowers. There was a freshness and novelty about the whole affar, as well as a spr of cordal fellowshp whch gave vvacy and enthusasm from the start. One of the nterestng features of the dnner was an mpromptu poll ot the guests as to the comng Presdental electon, wh an overwhelmng vote for Roosevelt, though one or two voted, two hands at a tme, for Hughes. Wlson ddnt seem to be n. Another nterestng teature of the dnner was a toast to Mr. Purvs, n whch Mr. Lydgate facetously referred to byegon e events when Mr. Purvs had so far forgotten hs dgny as to mpersonate John Knox n a vaudevlle show; and feelngly expressed hs deep sense of apprecaton for the loyal and unfalng support whch Mr. Purvs had gven to the church durng all these years of hs connecton wh Adjouru g from the table and passng nto the other rcon, th. more serous busness of the even ng was ntroduced by a short explanaton by Mr. Lydgate of the purpose of the gatherng m whch he recalled n a word, the hstory of the church, now 20 years old, and suggested that the tme had come for to move forward to new lnes of usefulness and actvy Ṫhe frst matter to be taken up was that of treasurer. Mr. Wllam Henry Rce ntroducted a resoluton of apprecaton to Mr Purvs for hs long years of fahful servce as treasurer. Mr. W. N. Stewart was then elected to the vacant poson. 2 4 THE GARDEN SLAND ssued Every Tuesday Mornng Luther Dermont Tmmons TUESDAY Roosevelt And Wlson Edor JUNK 13 Wh Hughes ns tn nomnee of the Republcan party fur presdent of the Uned States am Roosevelt as the nomnee of the Progressve party for the same hgh offce, the country s faced wh a suaton smlar to that of t) 12 when Wlson rode nto offce over a Republcan party dvded aganst self. That beng the case, eyes have kc turned n the past few clays toward Oyster Hay, for there and there alone s the key to the Republcan problem. Wh Roosevelt n the leld aganst hm, Hughes vold lkely poll a much larger vote than Taft dd n 1U12, but whether enough to elect s problematcal. The real hope (f the hour (and thcj are ndcatons that may be realzed) s that Mr. Roosevelt wll hmself whdraw from the race and wll come out n support of Justce Hughes. Should that come to pass the suaton would le greatly altered and Republcan stock would rse correspondngly. Cvc Conventon Laws The commtee to draft a constuton whch would make of the Cvc Conventon a permanent organzaton, wh defne objects and pogratn, met n Saturday mornng and presumably completed a set of laws to be submted to the varous commercal bodes for approval. Some delegates to prevous conventons have onpjsed the dea of permanent organzaton, or rather, of organzaton of any knd. They have argued that the Cvc Conventon was a movement of spontaneous orgn and growth, and nasmuch as had been reasonably successful should be kept that wav. Ths dea was overrdden n the last Conventon, however, and the commtee referred to above (composed of one delegate from each of the slands and two from ) was apponted and set to work. The probables arethat the consuton submted by the commtee wll fnd s wav to the conventon hall at ldo n September, to be pcked to peces, perhaps, or otherwse fxed up to su the majory. The Cvc Conventon has que lkely come to s:ay. t seems to meet a need, and the concensus of opnon appears to be so genunely on s sde that wll lkely grow, rather than slp backward, for a number of years. That beng the case,. should have a constuton and such laws as ndv drect s work wh defneness.. And Her Celebraton nves the people of the outer slands to come at " 11" and accept her hospaly, and then proceeds to close all of her doors. f the scheme of closng government offces and, more notable stll, the stores of the town s ntended as a concesson to hardworke d (?) employees and offcals, we have nothng to say, but certanly leaves deucedly unnterestng to the average slander vsng the cy. People of the outer slands who have lved n have no complant to make, but nnety per. cent, of the vsors to the cy on occasons lke ths are, to all ntents and purposes, n a strange place. The Stock Exchange, n place of declarng a holday, should hold double sessons. n short, the whole dea and scheme should be reversed exactly from what now s., wh her buldngs and wndows decorated and her stores and offces and government buldngs wde open looks good to the vsor from the outer slands. Closed up, and left to the dust and polcemen and chaffeurs, makes one quckly and awfully Now that the groundwor k of plans for a bg mlary program on July Fourth have been lad, let everybody get busy. We do not lke the slang word "boost." but seems to express just what we m;an. t wll be the frst Glorous Fourth n the hstory of Kaua to be partcpated n by real, lve soldery; and, moeover, wll be the frst tme that Kauas full regment has been brought together. The dayshould be made one long to be remembered, and we beleve that wll be. The dea of a Exposon PanPacf c n s a fne one and one that could be easly enough worked up f suffcent tme s allowed. t. would be no use rushng nto the affar and have an exhbon consstng of three calabashes, a boomerang, a Fjan pneapple club and a hunk of Slver Sword. The thng should be worked up for a couple of years n advance and then success wll be surely v attaned. Hawa Herald. Lhue.
