The Teachers Conventon Frday, Nov. 30 was the day on whch the weather man who had been frownng and unplcatanl rtll the weok to the people of Hanale, began to smle, n" the welcome of tho teachers who flocked from all parts of the sland for ther annuhl meetng. The conventon was called to order by Presdent E. A. Knudscn and opened wth a, rousng Star Spangled Banner" The report of secretary Mss Blanche Martn, gave an account of tho meetng hold January, at Wamea and that of tho treasurer, Mss Etta Lee showed the "astoundng" surplus of over seventy dollars n the treasury. By a unanmous vote tho offcers of the precedng year were wth the excepton of the treasurer, Mss Lee resgnng n favor of Mss Chrstopherson. The program commttee for the next year was announced as follows: Mss Hundley, charman; Mr, Wm. McCluskey, Mr. H.. Bro-d- e, Mr. John Bush, Mrs. Josephne Chamberlan. Address of Welcome The address of welcome was gven by Mr. A. Menefoglo, supervsor, county of Kaua. Mrs. Rce gave a few valuable suggestons as to ways n whch thu schools and school chldren can help n the great work. K"nttng classes for the grls have been begun n Lhue and the number of kntters can be greatly ncreased ; chldren may snp scraps of cloth nto fllngs for hosptal pllows whch are so much needed. t s a sgnfcant fact that the monthly shpmonts of materals from ths auxlary have been averagng fve hundred dollars n value and the ncrease of work demands more money to furnsh materals. Mrs. Knudscn sketched the hstory of tho Red Cross, begnnng wth ts foundngs a t Geneva, through ts varous stages of usefulness to ts present day status of a membershp well up n the mllons. A very enjoyable muscal number was rendered by tho competent Hawaan sexletto from among the Koloa teachers, Mrs. Aka. Mrs. Blake, Msses Kahe, Kalawe, V-dnand Mr. Lovoll They wero encorqd and later called upon agan. Mrs. Henry Sholdon also sang a solo wthout accomnanment whch s dlcult o accomplshment and was well accomplshed. Garden Hnts A talk by Mr Lesle Clark gave valuable suggestons to would-b- e gardncrs, many of whch wll be of great beneft f carred out n the school gardens. Hs advce was to avod turnng up the sub-fo- l whch s found from four to twelve nches beneath the surface clay, to prepare a good tlth by not dggng when too wet and thus to avod "puddlng"; to plant corn n square patches to nsuro bettor pollnaton by the wnd and to avod deep cultvaton when- - the roots are well developed. Ho emphaszed the mportance of the rotaton of crops, usng less mneral fertlzer and savng weeds to make compost heaps, ths beng almost as valuable as the use of stable manure. Mr. Carver. Ho dwelt mostly upon the nterestng trad tons o f Moorsh Portugal and panted a. glowng pcture of a tcachcrss paradse n Brazl, whero the teacher has a house and two servants furnshed, a n average salary of $150 per month and upon retrng after nne years of servce, gets half salary for the rest of hs lfe; after twelve years, two-throf salary and after eghteen years, the total salary whch s sent regularly whthersoever he lsteth. The Mllon of the Hgh School Mr. Wn. McCluskey addressed the conventon on "What tho Hgh School Should Mean to Us." Ho crtczed the crtcsm whch has called the hgh school the "fourth dmenson," meanng that t deals wth thngs whch have nothng to do wth lfe. Tho elementary perod of educaton, whch s at present too long " should be desgned to ntroduce the young mnd to tho world of thngs; the secondary to the socal usages of these thngs." Phlp Rce, home for a few days on a bref furlough, ntervewed bv the Garden sland, gave substantally the followng account of the lfe and aelvtes at the Offcers Tranng Camp at Seho-fel- d. was there for three months and t was, as you say, a very strenuous and eventful throe months. There wero one hundred of us, and weo-cup- ed one large two story buldng, the upper story of whch was gven over to the dormtory; the lower to ktchen, dnng room, store rooms, offces, etc. Every day was flled to overflowng wth a round r f unbroken actvty. Tho frst call was at o: 15 a. m, roll call at 5:30. Breakfast at G. Clean up at 0:30, and so on all through the long day tll 9 oclock at nght, when "lghts out" was the most welcome sound that could fall on human ears The days actvtes wero pretty severe, oven for those of us who were farly well used to athletcs and an actve lfe,so you can magne what t was for those who had led a sedentary lfe n offces or stores. These actvtes ncluded a settng up drll of one and a half to two hours, three hours or so of mltary drll and manual at arms n the forenoon, Avhch ncluded the sharp- us mghtly. The Commssarat was allrght; the fare was good smple, but wholesome, and well cooked. Of course workng lke that, you know a man can cat almost anythng, but guess t was good anyhow. One of tho strange thngs was the nordnate desre for candy nothng went to tho rght spot qute as well as a pound of candy home made candy, m partcular. We were allowed, by way of wages durng ths tranng perod, S100 a month. As Commssoned offcers wo wll get moro, for a Second Leutenant, and $1(50 for Frst Leutenant. n regard to tho Trenches: Well they were supposed to he as closely as possble an exact dupl cate of thoso to be found n the war zones at tho Front. They were 7 ft deep and just wde enough to get along n, pass the supples etc. And me had to dg them, andsomo of t was mgh ty hard dggng. At frst tho effort was made to keep tho men dggng contnuou- - ly, but they soon found that more headway was mado by dong t n relays of 15 mnutes each. Very few people who havent tred t know how hard pck and shovel work jean be, especally for a steady det day after day. The frst day or two were smply kllng but after that we got down to a bearng and t went allrght. Of course you understand that t s no fun to ptch the drt out of a narrow grave 7 ft. deep, oven f you do know how to do t. Murder at Kapaa Mauha On Frday nght a Korean was murdered n a contractors camp n the mountans mauka of Knnan.. the murderer beng a Japanese. Some dspute s sad to have been the causp. The man has been apprehended and hs case s to come up today at Kapaa. Marred Wllam Gunderson of McBrydc was marred to Rose Souza on Saturday evenng at the Wamea Catholc Church by Father Herman., Jula G undersol was brdesmad and Manuel Fernandez was groomsman. For several weeks we have been gettng ready to do some thng. have spent a great deal of my tme n the, trendes, gettng to know, the le of the land, n prepa raton for what mght have to do. Then came the day when all the battle statons had to lx arranged Wrath specally asked that mght be allowed to go wth the Ambulance, after had begged hm to allow me to stand by them n foul weather. The General agreed and sad he would be glad to have one Chaplan rght up n case of emergency. worked out a complete scheme for all emergences and sub mtted t to the Dvson. t was prnted verbatm as a Dvsonal oder the same afternoon. Well we all got nto poston. Wrath and had a hole n the sde of a bank and made t splnter proof wth three layers of sand-bag- s. You remember sayng that you felt about ten days ago that somethng unusual was gong on. t was! We were hurlng tons of shells on to the German lnes and they were replyng. Of course we were rght n front of our foremost batteres wth the nfantry, so all our own shells were rong over us anl the nose of the shells was terrfc. t seemed to make even thought mpossble.. We were very buy. Then one mornng the boys went over wth the bayonet and shell was let loose. Every gun the Germans could fnd was fred at full speed. Shells burst everywhere. t was nothng lke a battlefeld one reads about. Altogether the ground we were, nterested n ours and the enemy s was not twos.uarenules.l and over a thousand guns were hurlng shells on to that small! space hour after hour untl there was hardly a space of ten yards wthout a shell hole. Dugouts were drven n, trees and parts of houses were flung through the ar, and amd t all the stretcher benrert were brngng n the desperately wounded, whle the lghter cases were staggerng to the advanced ad post. Frst they came n ones and twos, then n tens, then n a steady stream untl hundreds were passng through. Those hours arc a confused nghtmare. remvn-bere- d seeng the frst hatch of forty walkng cases off by the new trench and then runnng back to report to Wrath that they had leen seen and the trench blown n behnd them makng ts further use mpossble. found hm cool and steady, dealng wth scores when there was not room for ones. Then a race to a battery telephone. Cars! Rght up under cover of the wood and we wll clear across the open. look and vanshes. Up they dashed a car at a tme. remember standng out at a corner, drectng the wounded and the, bearers to the cars and gettng j them off, four lyng and two stand--, ng or ten standng. Car after car, whle the shrapnel and hgh explosves burst all round. Heavens! What a scene. Blood everywhere, men staggerng, men dyng and we stoppng our laughter and jokes--th-nk of t to help some poor wretch over hs last agony. Then on agan swat pourng off one, but the wounded must be cleared. That was the one note all through clear, clear, clear, get them clear. You know what weather t was. Stll they come and stll Wrath and hs men operate steadly and coolly, vet not wastng a second, whle we unsklled ones examne the feld dressngs as men come along and pass them or reject them and turn them nto the "surgery." A staff offcer dashes up has a Wll they never stop? Shellng, yes of course they are shellng, but we were too busy to talk or thnk about t. Every word must be yelled, and even then t s dffcult to hear. Famlar voces call for a hasty word "Wlere s t,.old man? Oh! thats a smple bghty-luck- y dog. On you go." Humours begn to flter through. The cavalry are comng up Rot! No cavalry could get through here. But they are theyve been seen. havent seen them: besdes the 5th are wped out. The 5th have takcn the second lne and arc rushng the 3rd. The 5th have retred the 5th never started and so on! know, every body knows, nothng. t s gettng dark now and must be tvenng. Wo have been at t for 14 hours. The numbers are steadly growng less. Then t becomes dffcult to fll the cars. Only ones and twos now. The battle s over! WJat has happened? We nether know or care. The feld for the moment, s clear. "Come and have! lunch. Wrath, ts tenthrtv and bed-tm- e! "But he s already lyng n hs corner under the bank. drop down besde hm, and though the guns thunder on for three hours we le there n sold sleep. Then the second phase begns all over agan wll t never end? Well! ts ended now. Those who arc lett aro taken out of the lne and replaced by others. Falure! we ddnt break through, but others have. Our task was beyond us and the old battalon has been thnned out to less than half. All the old faces havo gone Jeffres, worn out wth stretcher carryng, sobs as he tells me that only sx are left from hs platoon. More than half the offcers have gone. But! well all our dead have lx?cn properly bured such as are not up aganst the German wre. No truce would our lads have, even to brng n ther dead. Ther wounded have been brought n. n contempt of the enemy. have just returned from the old battalon, now commanded by the Junor Major wth Naylor as second n command and only one other captan left. They would go over the top agan ht f they were allowed. They are full of fght and enthusasm. Eor me, hope to forget all about ther herosm. have seen and heard too much, for there s a pont bevond whch ones heartstrng can not be wrung. The General has been so good as to send for me and thank me for what dd. dont know what! dd. The Saturday departure from Nwlwl has for long vears heen. n a sense, n weekly soeal event, where people from all over the sland met and exchanged the courteses of lfe, and kept more or less n touch wth pne another and, always vaguely, vet nevtably, as the guests n a way of the Lhue people. Ths gave Lhue more or less of a soeal prstge, and more or less of an advantage. n a measurable degree ths advantage wll le lessened hy the transfer to Fort Allen, and we somewhat queston whether ths full prmacy of Lhue wll be restored by any contngency short of the realzaton of the Nawlwl deep-se- a harbor plans.. We do not Tesent or begrudge the ttmporary change. t s a consderaton and an accommodaton whch are due to the Wamea sde of the sland, and we trust that t may prove entrely statsfaetory and be long contnued. Food Reports The food conservaton weekly reports nsttuted throughout our sland communtes a few weeks ago are exertng n very salutary nfluence already. These reports of wheatless, meatless and wasteless meals week, by week, gve every ndcaton of beng made very carefully, and very honestly; and that beng the ease the ambton to make a good showng s sgnfcant of results. Some leftover, that under ordnary crcumstances would have gone nto the garbage can, s carefully saved n order that a clear record may be possble at the end of the week. Even the chldren take an nterest n these report cards and are ready to help make them as nealy deal as possble by cuttng out waste or reducng on wheat or meat. We dont know just what use may be made of these, card reports n Washngton, whther the results are transmtted, but at any rate they have a very consderable use here n stmulatng economy, patrotsm and humanty. Wamea Red Cross Actvtes Two cases of Red Cross hosptal supples have been forwarded to by the Western Kaua Unt whch wll go forward wth other smlar cases from other sectons of the Terrtory as soon as lossble. Extent of the Work n Europe At the begpnng of the war the Salvaton Army n England. France, Russa, Belgum, taly, Swtzerland, Sweden, Norway,.Denmark, Canada, Australa and New Zealand mmedately placed at the dsposal of the mltary authortes of these governments all ther prncpal buldngs, and ther resources of ther organzatons. The majorty of these buld ngs were accepted and used by the government authortes. Enlsted Men Over Salvaton Army men are enlsted n the Brtsh armv alone. n the armes of other countres the enlstments are proportonate. These men true to Salvaton army tranng make the most of opportuntes for Socal servce. Salvaton Army Representatves Servng among the troops of England and France are 600 offcers of the Salvaton army who conduct and oversee the socal and relef work of the Salvaton Armv. Ambulance Work Thrty-s- x ambulances have been suppled and manned by the Salvaton Army and have been n operaton snce the begnnng of the war. Each ambulance costs $2,000. a total of $72,000 spent bv the Salvaton army for ambulances alone. n addton to these are nnumerable other ambulances that are manned by Salvaton army men. Kuts at the Front The Salvaton army has erected and operates 146 huts n the war zones. Each hut can accommodate about 500 men at a meetng, and at other hours the 9pace s devoted to readng, wrtng and rest room, games, musc, sngng, and other socal actvtes, and entertanments. Meals and lght refreshments are served. Pcked Offcers Only Four Salvaton army offcers are apponted to each hut, a man and wfe and two assstants. Great care s exercsed n pckng offcers who have a good report for effcent and successful busness management. Solders at the Huts t s estmated that about 75,000 men vst the Salvaton army huts every day on the western battle fronts. Solders back from the trenches spend spare tme at the huts. Good readng matter and wrtng materal and comforts of all knds are made avalable for the solders. Meetngs Before the Battle Relgous servces conducted n the huts for the beneft of the men who are startng for the front lne trenches are crowded to capacty. Buldngs Offered to Government As soon as the state of war between the Unted States and Germany was declared to exst, the Salvaton army n the Unted States, promptly followed the example of the organzaton n other countres and placed all ts buldngs at the dsposal of the governments.
