Walker master, bound for South Seas on a fshng and tradng exped uoa The vessel stopped at French Frgate shoals for a month, and n proceeded to Mdway slands, where y dsembarked and made preparatons for a long stay. The Gen. Segel had been wrecked at ths pont a short tme before, and Wanderng Mn strel went down to rescue one of crew who had been left re. Whle re Capt. Walkers vessel went ashore, and j shps company, ncludng Cameron, found mselves n rar a precarous condton. There was nothng left for m to do but wat for somethng to turn up. The story told by a salor on Segel was that some tme after y lost vessel a Japanese junk floated up on beach. Ths was 60 feet long, and was consdered a great prze. Work was at once begun on fttng t up to carry a to Marshall slands,,600 mles sooth. When all was complete jnnk was put n water, but castaways found she was not stff enough, so y utlzed two spars found on beach and mprovsed m as outrggers and collected provsons for voyage. Ths occuped three or four months. The day before tme set for salng, three of party went over to a small sland near by for purpose of securng a lot of brds eggs, and, falng to return, a relef party west over to ascertan cause of delay, and found that one number had klled or two. Tne two dead men were Capt. Aspelne and Second Mate Brown. The murderer was a salor named Jorgensen and he afterwards admtted crme. As a punshment to murderer he was left on small sland, and small boat he nsed to go re wth Aspelne and Brown, hs vctms, was destroyed. But on ths lone sland were several gasolne drums and bts of wreckage, and se he used to make a raft, and paddle hmself over to large sland. When tnere he unexpectedly presented hmself at door of hut, and, sezng a rfle, snapped t at one of occupants of house. The gun was not loaded, and no damg e resulted. The man was overpow cred and next day party left for Marshall slands, leavng Jor! gensen at Mdway alone. The junk reached Marshall sl lands n 29 days and crew were taken to Honolulu and related r experence. When ths story was communcated to Capt. For a tme t was notced that some of men were gettng fsh and brds and saltng m. As t was unusual. t began to cause wonder. The cause was learned early one mornng when best whale boat and four of shps company were mssng. As a heavy storm sprang up about ths tme t s supposed boat and men were lost. Efforts were made, and small boats and rafts constructed wth a vew to takng party away, but somethng ntervened every tme. An applcaton from Mrs. H. M. Mr. From Obervatons 3adc by Scott sad that he could put up Wear Bureau. a temporary lanal and close up sde of house for less Followng s meterologcal than 00. Snce summary a new house would probably be bult S96, from observatons made by wear bureau: re soon he could see no reason why a temporary structure such as he pro Average temperature (mean of three daly observatons), 74.6; normal for November, 73.9; average daly mn posed, would not do. The Board heartly endorsed move, and Mr. Scott was authorzed to proceed at once, cost of undertakng not to exceed $00. Prof. Alexander reported that he had made arrangements for lease of small porton of land that projects nto larger porton already obtaned at Pearl Cty for a school buldng. The Board endorsed hs acton. Presdent Smth proposed to Board that each of members take each a number of schools of ths dstrct under hs or her supervson and vst same once a month. n hs opnon, work would be much better done, and so much labor would not devolve upon any one or two persons. He dd not thnk that ths supervson would n any way nterfere wth oflcers of Board or commttees. W. A. Bowen f such a thng should be done, could people n outsde dstrcts say that Board was gvng all ts attenton to schools of Honolulu and none to rs? People say a great many such thngs. Presdent Smth Accordng to that we must not do anythng at all, because we are afrad of outsde dstrcts. H. Von Holt Havent we our nspectors? Presdent Smth Yes, we haye; but work s too great, and we must dvde burden f we would have effcency. The course that propose would gve members of Board better understandng of matters that come wthn ts jursdcton. W. A Bowen, to J. F. Scott Do you thnk that you would n any way be nterfered wth? J F. Scott No, not at all W A. Bowen thnk tho plan a good one f for no or reason than that t would show teachers that Natonal Board s nterested n work y are carryng on. Mr. Bowen n broached tho sub ject of parlamentary law. He had been used to free and open dscussons nb regnlar weekly meetng. Would t not be a good plan to have sonc regular course of work whch could bo followed at weekly meetngs? The ladles suggested that re dd exst a regular course of work, but that open dlscusstons referred to were a matter of necessty from very nature of questons arsng from week to week and pecular to educa tonal work. Mr. Bowen n suggested that t mght not be a bad plan to requre that members of Board study varous matters under ts jursdcton, such as poston of schools, etc. Presdent Smth n referred to greatadvantag of personal knowledge and cted as an example Board of Health. Eeach member was famlar wth varous nsttutons under ts jursdcton and could speak more ntellgently than from mere hearsay. Mr. Bowen sad that he had been a member of Board over a year and durng that tme had not vsted a sngle school. He had been too busy a man, or at least he thought so. However, f Board decded to make se vsts he would fnd tme to go. t was decded that each member of Board start out wth two schools a pece. Ths wll probably begn after next meetng. Prof. Alexander reported that re were 500 sets of fve maps each offered Board at 50 cents a set. t was de cded to take half number, whch wll amount to $23, ths to come out of book fund. "A chcken s a brd and so s a goose," sad Port Surveyor to Capt. Paul Smth of dredger yesterday mornng. "Therefore, you need only pay 25 cents to get one through gate of Pacfc Mall wharf." These remarks arose on a complant made by Smth to effect that he had been charged 50 cents for each one of bantam chckens he had bought from a Chnaman on P. M. S. S. Chna. The Custom House offcers had always understood that chckens were to be assessed a half dollar, but now that Port Surveyor has called "chckens" "brds" re wll no longer be any mstake and 25 cents wll be charge n future. Capt. Smth took out three chckens and got back 75 cents after he had made hs complant. A NEW SHEET "Ke Aloha Anu Oao" Wth R. W. Wlcox asedtor. Robert W. 4 A HAWAUAS GAZETTKrFKDA Y. DECEMBER SEMWEEKL AS SEHWEEKL Y. SSUED TUESDAYS A5D FRDAYS 9 W. R. FARRNGTON. EDTOR. TRDAY DECEMBER 4, 896. BRSK AND TO PONT. Whle commttee havng n charge complng of necessary documents to state objects of Annexaton Club s composed of men fully competent to accomplsh task n a satsfactory manner, suggeston comng from several members that brevty characterze declaraton of prncples s certanly a good one. Tle day has gone by when a long lne of whys and wherefores meets wth popular approval. When men are banded toger n a popular movement y prefer that r object shall be set forth n as clearly outlned form as possble. t was only a few years ago that one of poltcal partes of Massachusetts formulated ts platform n a seres of short and ponted paragraphs, dea beng that t would receve more studed attenton n se days when people read on run and are not nclned to spend tme to peruse ponderous documents. For a platform, resoluton presented by General Hartwell Frday evenng expresses stuaton about as clearly as any document that has been penned. The qualfcaton for membershp need consst of nothng more than good standng as a ctzen coupled wth an earnest desre to accom. plsh at an early day annexaton of Hawa to Unted States. Nothng n shape of drawng lnes on natonalty, prevous or present poltcal afflaton, should fgure n requrements "of membershp. Annexaton s a common ground on whch every ctzen or clan can meet and jon n an aggressve work to reach a glorous end. Sde ssues or a waste of words are not want ed n any department of annexaton campagn. State prncples, state requrements n no lengthy, ambguous forms; place flat proposton before people and re wll be no possble opportunty for requestng an explanaton of what ths phrase or that sentence means. Then rank and fle can read r ttle clear and waverng outsders wll have no excuse to haggle over small ponts except of r own manufacture. SMALL FARMERS AM) ADVER TSXG. More advertsng for Hawa" s a strng that has been harped on for yearsj and every day brngs new evdence that more vgorous twangng s needed n order that somethng may be accomplshed to satsfy appette for nformaton possessed by many capable men of Unted States. One of re 5 ucent aauuons to tne rans o ja waan coffee growers s a gentleman from Butte, Montana. Ths poneer states that for several months he endeavored to obtan Llterature of some knd that would JS?6 km a ea wat tue absolute and complete dscredt upon people here than fact that Amercan farmers have to go chasng about as for a needle n a hay stack to fnd out what sort of place ths s. Chance meetng wth globe trotters s practcally what we are dependng on to tell people east of Rocky mountans that Hawa s a country where Amercan farmers are wanted aye, and where y are needed. The apathy of AngloSaxo n ctzens toward spreadng nformaton abroad s comng to pont that makes stuaton almost dangerous. Just now re s consderable agtaton over, ncrease of Orentals. People ask, rwlat are we eong to do about t?" Then y read up on our natonal treates, and er leave queston unanswered or propose some mpossble scheme for abrogatng ths conventon or that treaty. There s just one thng to do n present brng AngloSaxons emergency to country, and more partcularly AngloSaxons of Unted States. Some one asks, fhow shall we brng m?" Certanly not by whsperng n some toursts ear that AngloSaxons are needed, certanly not by sttng around lke dummes and wshng "thngs were dfferent." Amercan farmers are not Trlbys and cant be hypnotzed, but gve m nformaton and y know a good opportunty when y see t or can read of t. Pessmsts swear and assert that Amercan farmers wll not come; "y have better advantages at home." Ths may be true, but no one has yet proved t.!new settlers n coffee dstrcts are not wal ng to go home agan. f pessmstc, dea s cantbedo ne to rule " AngloSaxo n populaton, perhaps after all t wll be just as well for colones of Japanese students to land frpn Orental steamers. Old fashoned, self nterested cranks say Amercan farmers wll not come; careful students of stuaton say y must be brought. And Amercan farmers wll come f an effort of average force s made to place agrcultural possbltes of country before m. The Government s now preparng a valuable pamphlet of nformaton, of whch several thousand copes are to be dstrbuted. Make that number one mllon copes and confne dstrbuton to Unted States, n pamphlets wll be heard from. f number s lmted by Government appropraton, busness communty ought to take matter n hand. Several HtsThea Artsts Score tre Crowded From Stage to Doors. "The Great Unknown" s. to Frawleys, one of best drawng comedes n repertore. ts producton n Honolulu was not an excepton to rule elsewhere, for re was not a vacant seat at New Hawaan Opera House last nght when curtan rose on frst act. There were several ater and box partes, among m one at whch Presdent and Mrs. Dole were host and hostess. There s so lttle pathos n play that t s entrely lost n avalanche of comedy whch prevals. True enough re are parts where one could not laugh wthout dsturbng hs neghbors, but play s not suggestve of a sngle sob. t treats of a woman whose msson, to her, s to nflct a lot of novels and stuff whch she dgnfes wth name of poetry upon publc. So mpressed s she wth belef that she s a great wrter that she neglects her famly, con sstng of a husband and two young grls, and fnally goes to Europe, where she wll be able to pursue her art n a more refnng atmosphere. Besdes, Jarraway famly just referred to. re are two or three male lovers, one female dtto and a dear old aunt of latter, who proves a captal matchmaker. Then re are usual servants and stage appurtenances. As Jeremah Jarraway, far of two grls and husband of Great Unknown, Harry Corson Clarke bore much of burden of play. f almost constant laughter on part of audence s a crteron by whch hs actng s to be judged, Mr. Clarke made a decded ht. Hs scenes wth young wdow, wth whom he magnes he s nfatusted, were clever. Agan, n last act, where he meets hs wfe, Alpha to hs Omega n r marred lves, after an nterval of three years, ths young actor had unlmted scope to exhbt hs capabltes as a comedan. Dgnfed Blanche Bates, n char acter of a hoden, was a metamorphoss. The Honolulu atergoer s have accustomed mselves to seeng her, f not always, as womanly woman, at least at stage of lfe where all thoughts of romp and nonsense have been outgrown. The success acheved by Mss Bates n or roles she has essayed was repeated last nght as Etna, tomboy. From frst, where she meets her far after playng hooky from her studes, to very last where, through her suddenly dscovered love for a cousn who has been away for years and juset returns, her actng was characterzed by that completeness of ease and grace whch has won for her plaudts of audences whch have flled Opera House at every performance. The meetng wth her mor, dressed as a new woman wth a bold suggeston of mannlshness n her makeu p was superb. t was n ths scene, too, where lttle Hope Ross dstngushed herself, for she depcted tomboy wth a naturalness of detal that was surprsng. n frst act Mss Ross has a captal scene wth Mr. Lesle, her musc teacher. Throughout play her actng was excellent and qute beyond crtcsm; her three best scenes, however, are those mentoned, and one n whch she and her sster (Mss Bates) read r mors latest novel, and go nto raptures over romantc scenes depcted. Mr. Worthng, as Ned Dreemer, Etnas cousn and lover, seemed out of sorts; re was somethng n hs actng whch mpressed people wth a feelng that he "wshed hmself somewhere else. t may have been part, but certan t was Mr. Worthng was not at hs best, nor was hs rendton of ths character to be compared wth that whch he played n "Two Escutcheons." He makes a very good stage lover, under ordnary crcumstances, but t must be admtted that part n whch a ven of humor rurs : through lnes s better suted to Mr. Worthngs abltes than character he played n "The Great Unknown." He was seldom on stage, except n lonely love scenes, but what he acted lke a man who had dropped n unexpectedly and wshed he hadnt. The greatest delneator of old woman characters n Unted States s Mrs. Glbert. Next to her, n opnon of crtcs abroad s Phosa Mc Allster, who played Aunt Penelope last nght. Unfortunately for patrons of he ater n Honolulu repertore of Frawleys has not been such that Mss McAllster could be seen to advantage n roles whch have made her famous elsewhere. Her Aunt Elza, n "Hs Wfes Far" was a dream, both n makeu p and delneaton, but re ware not enough to t to gve publc an dea of her artstc capabltes. The same may be sad of her performance n "The Great Nowhere but n last scene does she have an opportunty to do more than admre stage settngs. That she s an actress of ablty s acknowledged by every one who has seen her. The ODonnell Don, part assgned to Mr. Frawley, was n excellent hands. He was genteel rsh gentleman who had followed a wdow to Amerca to tell her of hs love and restore to her a locket she had lost n old country. Mr. Frawleys brogue was perfect enough to remnd one of lamented Bouccault t was not ntensely Celtc nor was t suggestve of anythng coarse. The part was not a great one, but Mr. Frawley played t well. Mr. Lesle had lttle to say as musc teacher, and he sad t well. Mr. Bosworth, as Twtters, was n evdence manly from hs excellent makeup as a prvate tutor, and Mr. Eno3, as servant, had much too lttle to say and do for a man of hs talents. The scene of play s n last act, where Arabella Jarraway, Great Unknown, appears a supposedly delcate flower and a vctm to muse. A small factory was operated for several years at Staunton, Va., untl t burned 8 months snce; enough was done to warrant opnon that " mddle South possesses advantages for beet sugar ndustry surpassed only by Sourn Calforna," but wth nearness to market to offset that favored regon. The Wsconsn Beet Sugar Company, after vexatous delays, s hurryng forward ts factory at Falls, and hopes to turn out sugar by December. Meanwhle farmers are enslong r beets, havng made contracts to grow 2,500 acres of beets annually for 0 years. The factory s beng equpped throughout wth Amercan bult machnery. Durng past 0 years sugar beets have been grown repeatedly n a great many places n about all States and Terrtores West of New England jand Jfprth of 35th parallel, n all fsprts of sol and clmate. Thousands t of analyses of beets have been made by Unted States Department of Agrculture and by varous statons. n some States experment statons have done a remarkably comprehensve work along tfese lnes, notably n New York, ndana, Wsconsn, owa, Mnnesota, Dakotas, Nebraska, Wyomng, Washngton, Calforn Colorado, a. Utah and Over much of ths vast area, ncludng also Kentucky, Tennessee, Vrgnas, and probably North Carolna, t has been conclusvely shown that beets of proper qualty can be grown n proftable quanttes suffcent to fully supply any number of well located sugar facortes that s to say, D to 20 tons per acre of beets con tanng 2 to S per cent or more of sugar, wth an average coeffcent of purty of SO per cent or above that Arrangements are under way for a large expanson of beet sugar ndustry. Mr. Claus Spreckels has ordered outft for a mammoth ml! n Salnas Valley, Monterey County, Calforna, for whch he requred guarantee that at least 22,500 acres of beets would be grown annually for fve years, ndcatng a plant wth a capac ttyfof upward of 300,000 tons of beets. Mr. Spreckels declares, as a result of X lness to put,000,000 nto sugar factores n that localty. A plant at le, Bowlng Gr(een, Ky., and one at nd., are n prospect Wsconsn has one factory qute defntely assured. Central New York captalsts have an opton on only beet sugar factor n Canada at Farnham, Quebec whch t s proposed to establsh n Mohawk Valley. Any number of factory propostons are n embryo, and many enterprsng towns all over country are plannng to push for a beet sugar factory. Much depends upon State and natonal legslaton. McKnleys electon wll be taken as nsurance of reasonable protecton aganst foregn competton, and wll be followed by rapd development of ndustry. Even f Bryan s elected, t s possble development may not be wholly as much sugar per capta (65 pounds) as Europe. The total quantty used s, refore, certan to enormously ncrease from year to year. The worlds supply of sugar now comes more largely from beets than from cane. The Unted States produces about 300,000 tons of sugar n a favorable season now, oneha lf more than a decade ago, but our annual mports are approachng 2,000,000to n mark. Beets are a comparatvely sure crop and yeld more sugar per acre than does cane n Lousana. The books of one of best equpped Lousana plantatons and sugar factores, compared wth records of Chno beet sugar enterprse for fve years past, prove latter to be better proposton. But re s plenty of room for both sugar cane (wthn ts lmted envronment) and sugar beet (on ts broader feld) untl Unted States produces all sugar t consumes. To do ths wll requre at least 750 more factores, several mllon acres of land (crop rotaton s necessary), a vast amount of labor and an mmense nvestment of captal. t wll mean large busness for our machne shops, enormous annual tonnage for ralroads, wealth and prosperty for farmers, puttng nto pockets of Amercan farmers, laborers and captalsts $00,000,000 now pad out each year for mported sugar. n vew of probablty that a number of beet sugar enterprses wll be offered to nvestors, certan ponts are mportant: Frst The factory must be assured of a certan supply of beets of good qualty. Even f pledges of an abundance of beets are forthcomng, y are of lttle value unless t has been determned by actual experment upon lands n queston that y wll produce beets of proper qualty as well as quantty. At least two or three years tests are usually necessary to determne ths beyond a doubt. Fortunately, such tests have been made already n a large number of places. Too much stress cannot be lad on gettng plenty of rch beets. Second. The beets should he grown as near factory as possble; a haul of 50 to 00 mles absorbs much of proft on crop. There should be suffcent beet land avalable wthn a reasonable dstance to furnsh de sred quantty of beets when only onethr d of such land s sown to beets, hs experence wth beets n Golden State and wth hs monopoly of crops. Beets can be grown year after thus permttng a wse rotaton of cane sugar ndustry of Hawa: " year on same land, but t s not may not lve to see day, but younger men wll see that n 0 years Thrd.
