TUESDAY, JANUARY,, 98 SUBSCRPTON RATES, $2.5C PER YEAR 5 CENTS PER COY t MASKED AT BULL MAKAWEL A New Year's eve masquerade ball wrb gven last nght by tbc hoy. of Maknwell n ther clubhouse. t was ln?uly attended by guests from the Whole sland am some front. Tho stxo of the affar could bo Judged by llo lon? lne of automobles parked on both sldos of the street n front of the club. Tho grounds wero lghted wth long festoons of Japanese lanterns whch punctuated tho brllant moonlght wth charmng effect. nsdo tht house tho decoratons were both taste ful and approprate. Flags of varous-kndworo draped about the walls tho Stars and Strpes pedomnntlng whle potted plants and fancy lanterns completed a pretty pcture. Tho costumes were of all knds and colors, some of them showng evdence of consderable thought and careful attenton to detal. Ono would have to lo a closo observer and a student of tho dress of varous hstorcal perl ols to bo able to dellne and apprecate them nl. However, many of them needed no defnton for tho charm o tlor owners mado any analyss of costumes a most dstractng effort To classfy ono young lady t was necessary to consult works on orn thology. entomology and pomology to fnd out whether she was a brd, a butterfly or a peach. f the wngs had been clpped thcro would have been no trouble at all. A young shepherdess wth her stalt spent much tme tryng to keep n order a flock of applcants for dances but many of them only got tho hook Several very chc chckens from Chna fluttered about closely pursuer by would-b- partners, whle hero and thoro could bo seen tho danty mads of Japan out for a lark, and makng the most of ther lberty. They had loft all care at homo for not a sngle ob had a baby sttng on t. One lady's costume was a puzzle. n leu of a better name t mght bo called a sport sut, for she had on what appeared to bo a huntng dross and fshng boots at least thoy wero lou enough for fshng but t mado lttle dfference, for no amount of "camou llago" could dsguse or detract from ono so charmng. Tho lttlo brd fancer under tho bg hat, and the two grls wtl tho drgble skrts, the ono n whte, the other n red, all came n for a sharo of attenton; whle dark-harethe d beauty n old rose old rose wast and old roso skrt, old rose slppers and old rose hoso was a flower who never had a chanco to adorn tho wall. Lttlo Red Hdng Hood, so labeled for lack of a better name for her fascnatng personalty clothed n brllant red, was everywhere n evdence; whle dozens of others fltted about n n bewlderng array of hues and shades. Tho mon appeared n every concevable rg from John Chnaman to leau Urununcl, wth yama-yan- a suts, as usual, n the maorty (because thoy are so easy to put on). Ono of them appeared to bo a Mexcan, for lls pants wero open-face- around the feet, and had buttons basted all over ts checkered area wth pre-wa- r prodgalty. Tho hat was mssng perhaps t was checked, too. Another slender youth mpersonated tho leather of our Country, as wtl powdered wg and whte calves, ho waltz-otho grls around. A very thck-se- t baby wth bonnet and rattle was hard to pluco at frst. Babes beng neuter gondor up to a certan ago. tho matter wus left n doubt tll later n tho ovonlng, when a cgarotto droopng from a corner of hs mouth gave hm away. A most delghtful ovonlng was spent and tho wholo company thanked tho boys of Mnkawol and wshed thorn a Happy Now Year. After tho mdnght danco a substantal supper was served. Good musc was furnshed by an octotte from Lhuo whch teased tho crowd wth short dances and long Somo very graceful exhbtons of tho torpslchorean art woro also furnshed by tho Lhuo contngent; and f a contost had boon sot for tho occason thoro s no quoston hut that she- - would havo won, cs, C2, ALMA M, (ATEt). LE DSTRCT COURT NEWS Anlanaclo Fnlces, a very young and handsome but lovesck Flpno, was brought up n Court charged wth a statutory offense. Antanaco engaged learned counsel to defend hm and tho case was on all forenoon before Judge J. L. Horth; the courtroom had to be cleared of all curous spectators, of whch qute a crowd collected, tho nature of the case n tho opnon of the Judge requrng tlls. t seems Atanaclo, very much n love wth a comely Korean maden of a lttle more than ffteen summers, had entced her away from her mother's custody, the young lady evdently wllng, and was lvng wth her at Llhuc when arrested at request of the outraged mama. Atanaco was duly convcted after a lot of hot legal sparrng and gven tho mnmum fne by tho Court and emphatcally enoned to sn no more. On Saturday Anatalo Pnar, an aged Flpno, was brought up n Court for examnaton as to hs santy and upon the expert testmony of Dr. E. X. Young, resdent government physcan, tho man was commtted by the.ludgo to the nsane asylum, t appearng to tho satsfacton of tho Judge that tho above named Anatalo 'uar was an nsane person, and that tho publc safety requres hs restrant untl ho becomes of sane mnd. Hereby hangs a sad talo comuenc ng wth Anatalo boardng the Kuau at Nawllwlll on December 8th bound for, how ho fol down an open hatch n tho after hold, sustanng concusson of tho bran and probably a fractured skull, causng hs present predcament. He was removed to the Llluo Hosptal, where he aas been cared for snce. Anatalo and a grandchld were on ther way back to tho Phlppne slands whero they wero to enoy a lttle money saved up by tho old man, and now ho s a publc charge wthout fault of hs own. Whle at tho Lhuo Hosptal, Anatalo, who had developed somo cunnng, escaped from tho nsttuton on Frday wth only lls regulaton nghte on and mado a bee lno for Keala or beyond; travelng at tho speed of a runaway auto, le successvely passed through Kapaa and Hanamaulu wth flyng garment, leavng a vacuum n the ar so to speak, frghtenng people along tho road, who thought thoy saw. ghost; when ho had n an almost ncredble tme nearly reached the Walua brdge, ho was overtaken by the mnons of tho law n hot pursut n an auto and captured. Now Anatalo s -bounagan, but for tho halo pupulo, and t all seems a pty, but ho stands an excellent chanco of recoverng substantal damages from the transportaton company f le over becomes of sane mnd agan. On Monday four gamblers forfeted bal of brngng total of hues and costs for December up to? 0S2.G5, whch was pad over to C. G. Kaulu-kou-, Treasurer of tho County. CHRSTMAS DAY AT WAMEA FOREGN CHURCH. Apparently the Northern teachers workng n the South entertan the same opnon. Wth very rare exceptons, they educate ther chldren whle young n ther own homes, and as soon as the chldren reach a sutable age send them North to whte schools for ther educaton. n ths the Southern convcton and the Northern practce are both founded on a sound prncple. On ths prncple mssonares n pagan lands have generally acted, sendng as early as practcable ther chldren to Amerca to school and college. Educaton s not all furnshed by teachers and text-book- More potent than both combned n nfluence upon the character s school companonshp. Whatever the future may have n store for us, at present the chldren of Negro parents are generally not such as exert an elevatng nfluence upon whte companons. Slavery would not be the evl thng whch now practcally all Amercans beleve t to have been f the chldren of slave parents were the best companons for the chldren of an always free people." The above has sgnfcant mplcatons for us here n the educaton of our chldren. WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL SURVEY? Some months ago there was more or less talk of a school survey whch was to be undertaken some tme n the near future.
