Edward and Lucy teaches, proclaims and lives the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do so through the celebration of the Eucharist, the administration of the sacraments and in loving and merciful service to all.

As we enter October, remember that this is Respect Life month. We remember all the many ways life is in danger in our world and especially in our country.

We also pay attention to the move of western states to promote assisted suicide and the disaster that brings to our society.

..october is also the month o the Holy Rosary. We pray the Rosary every Monday evening at 6:30pm at St. Edward and before the 10:30am Mass at St. Lucy.

...our Paris pastoral Council met last Thursday and discussed several items of interest to you. 1) Our upcoming Parish Life Survey the weekend of November 3 & 4.

2) We discussed the progress of our move toward Youth Ministry. I have been in conversation with Fr. Jay and Therese Zickert opening the way for our senior high students to join Life Teen at St.

3) We are planning our annual Stewardship Weekend on the weekend of October 13 & 14. We pledge a year of service to our community and beyond in one of the many ministries we sponsor.

.our Christmas Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, November 3 at St. Lucy. Mark your calendar....the two shall become one flesh Today we are asked to think and pray about the institution of marriage.

We all know a lot about marriage, from experience or observation. You and I exist because a man and a woman loved each other and brought us into the world.

If we believe that all human life is sacred from conception to natural death, you know how countercultural we seem to be just as Christianity, by its nature, has always been...october is also the month o the Holy Rosary. We are so concerned about our world and the Blessed Mother asks us to pray the Rosary daily for our world. We pledge a year of service to our community and beyond in one of the many ministries we sponsor. 4) We keep trying to determine the role of CETAP. It is meant to help families stay among us by offsetting the tuition surcharge at St. Helen for nonparishioners..our Christmas Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, November 3 at St. Lucy. Someone asked a middle-aged woman what she thought of the sermon. She replies, I wish I know as little about it as he does. We all know a lot about marriage, from experience or observation. You and I exist because a man and a woman loved each other and brought us into the world. If we re among the lucky ones, they stuck together and took care of us. That s enough to convince us that marriage is very important, not only to us, but also in the sight of God. Let s face it, however, many people are not so sure anymore. Women and men are falling in love and living together but feel no need to get married. Forty years ago that made news, but not now. Weddings don t always work out the way we hoped. Marriage becomes unpopular because it involves promises that seem to some to be too risky. They say they re committed, but make sure they leave a way out if things don t go the way they hoped. It seems better than making promises they may not want to keep. Marriage dies ask couples to make promises to each other to stay together after the glow has faded. Today we have become a nation of single-parent families and fatherless children. These families have become a national tragedy. We are learning, the hard way, the wisdom of the teaching of the Old Testament and the Gospel concerning marriage and the fact that it is the best way to go best for all concerned. That doesn t make it easy. Marriage calls for courage and sacrifice to meet the challenge of faithful life together. (James DiGiacomo, SJ)

4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from popery to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a onehundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a chapel. Catholic Emancipation was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own.
