(For weddings, please call at least six months in advance of your planned wedding time.) Communion/Anointing the Sick Due to privacy laws priests must be asked by the family members to visit parishioners in the hospital or nursing home. Please advise us of those in need of the Church s ministry, whether they are homebound or have been hospitalized. We are happy to bring the Eucharist to those who cannot get out to attend Mass. And if someone is ill or declining in health, the pastor is happy to come to their home, anoint them and bring them Holy Communion. Please call the rectory, and we will make the arrangements for you. Cemetery Arrangements Gate of Heaven Parish has four cemeteries Calvary Cemetery, Water Street Cemetery, St. Matthew Cemetery and St. Margaret Cemetery. You are always welcome to make arrangements for your eventual burial in one of these cemeteries, as three of the four have sites to lease. Please call the rectory in order to ask about end-of-life preparations. Parish Bulletin If you, or someone you know, is homebound, please call the rectory and let us know. We d love to send them the weekly bulletin so they can keep up with the goings-on in the parish. Also, if you are a snowbird, and head south or west for the winter, we can also get the bulletin to your winter address. That way you always know what s going on here at home! Please consider remembering our parish in your will.

4 Dear parishioners, Many, many thanks for your warm welcome which I received at my party last Sunday evening at Colonel Town Community Camp. It was so nice to meet so many of you thank you for coming out on a Labor Day weekend! In truth, however, I wish to thank each and every one of you for making me feel so at home since day #1. At the beginning of August, I spoke with Bishop Libasci s secretary, and she asked me how I liked my new assignment. I told her, The Bishop has spoiled me. In particular I thank Lindsey Foss for organizing our annual Parish Picnic and the Re-dedication of the Shrine party. A good time was had by all! Also a warm thank you to Jeanne Nadeau for organizing my welcome party and her two close associates and assistants, Kim Crane and Margo Cliché. Finally, thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their grillin and cookin skills! May God bless you all and reward you for your generosity! Fr. Schultz Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, Ghana... This weekend is our mission appeal from the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani in Ghana, Africa. Fr. Joseph represents this year s annual Mission Coop the one missionary appeal the diocese sets up for us each year. The Catholic Diocese of Sunyani was established in Most of it is situated in poor rural areas, where most of the parishioners are peasant farmers. These areas have lagged behind the rest of the country in education, basic infrastructure and health. The faith is relatively young. The faithful are mainly first and second generation Christians. In many areas the Word of God is being preached for the first time. Response to the faith is encouraging. Young people are especially accepting the faith, and there are over 300,000 baptized in the diocese. The Church of Sunyani also tries to provide some basic social development projects in areas of extreme poverty. (The average annual income of the people in this area is five-hundred dollars.) They seek to establish schools at the grade and high school levels, open new parishes, provide portable water by drilling wells, organize vocation rallies to promote vocations to the priesthood and to religious life, and organize workshops on awareness and prevention of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and screening. Through your generosity to this appeal we hope to build up the Church in this diocese and to re-invigorate the missionary spirit. Please be as generous as you can, and we thank you for your kindness toward your brothers and sisters across the globe. God loves each of us as if there were only one of us. Saint Augustine Wedding Anniversary Mass... Bishop Peter A. Libasci invites all couples celebrating an anniversary of 5, 25 or 50 years to attend the Fall Wedding Anniversary Mass. Couples are encouraged to invite select family members to share in the joyous occasion. This celebration will be held Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. To register please contact the rectory ( ) by September 18, Once registration has been completed by the parish office, all registrants will receive an invitation to this special celebration. Couples celebrating other significant anniversaries will be asked to register next year for a spring celebration. To all married couples celebrating 5, 25 or 50 years, congratulations, and we look forward to seeing you at this fall s Wedding Anniversary Mass! Saturday Mass... There will be no 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning Mass at Our Lady of the Mountains Shrine on September 22. Worldwide Marriage Encounter... Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Take time for your marriage by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next weekends are December 7-9 in Duxbury, MA and September in Oneonta, NY. 5 Without the burden of afflictions it is impossible to reach the height of grace. The gift of grace increases as the struggle increases. St. Rose of Lima We are looking for jewelry... It s time to give some thought to looking through those jewelry boxes and parting with broken pieces of some things that you just don t wear anymore. Our table at the fall sale has been a hit, and it s mostly because of your generosity. Please place your offerings in the baskets at the back of the churches. Thanks for your help, and we hope to see you at the sale! Tabernacle Society... Members of the Tabernacle Society are reminded of their upcoming meeting Tuesday, September 18, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the church hall at All Saints. We re getting closer to our annual Fall Sale and we hope you will join us to make plans and to prepare. All ladies of the parish are welcome, and we d love to have your help! Knights of Columbus... The Knights of Columbus will hold their monthly meeting this Tuesday, September 18, at 6:00 p.m. in the rectory at St. Matthew. CWG s Yankee Candle Sale... The Catholic Women s Group will be selling Yankee Candles and candies and nuts through next weekend, September 23, before and after the Masses at St. Matthew and St. Patrick churches. 6 Weekly Readings, 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 16, 2018 Isaiah 50: 4c-9a / Psalm 116: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 / James 2: / Mark 8: Who do people say that I am? Jesus poses this question to his disciples on his journey through Caesarea Philippi. It elicits Peter s acknowledgment that Jesus is the Messiah. For centuries Israel had looked forward to God fulfilling his promise to King David by raising up another great leader to restore Israel s kingdom (2 Samuel 7). These hopes had become clouded in political and earthly expectations. Peter s response, in unambiguous terms, You are the Christ (or the Messiah), gives Jesus the opportunity to offer a different understanding. Jesus says that he has come not to establish an earthly kingdom in power, bur rather a spiritual kingdom in weakness. God s Kingdom will be established through Jesus Death and Resurrection. The First Reading, from the third of Isaiah s Servant Songs, belongs to another tradition pointing to the Messiah s coming in humiliation and suffering. Jesus draws upon this tradition in referring to his own ministry of suffering and death on behalf of God s people. Peter fails to take this tradition into account when he tells Jesus not to talk about suffering and death. He is utterly perplexed and alarmed, for Peter believed that the Messiah would come in power and glory. When Jesus says to Peter, Get behind me, Satan, he is referring to Satan in the Book of Job, where Satan, as the name actually means, is God s adversary. Jesus reinforces this by saying that Peter s thought are human ways of thinking, not God s way. A further challenge emerges for Jesus followers from his revelation that he is going to suffer and die. His followers lives will embrace the same path of suffering, Death and Resurrection. As true Christians, our lives too will share in Jesus redemptive suffering. 1. From these readings, how would you explain the meaning of the word Messiah (Christ)? 2. What would be your answer to Jesus question, Who do you say that I am? 3. Have you experienced the reality of Jesus words, Take up your cross and follow me? St. Andrew Dinners... St. Andrew was the first of the Apostles to hear Jesus call to follow him. We would like to invite men in our diocese who are considering a vocation to the priesthood or who would simply like some help hearing the Lord s call for their life, to an evening of prayer, conversation with the Vocations Team and dinner. These evenings will take place for different age groups on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. at the Joseph House (279 Cartier Street) in Manchester.
