3 April 26, 2015 FANTASTIC NEWS Today is Good Shepherd Sunday and the Annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations. And this year there is great cause for rejoicing! We have spectacular news. In the United States there is a 25% increase in priestly ordinations from last year. We will ordain 595 priests while last year we ordained 496. Here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre Bishop Murphy will ordain five young men on Saturday, June 20 th at 11:00 AM in St. Agnes Cathedral. One of them will be Deacon Sean Magaldi of our parish and he will celebrate his First Solemn Mass the next day here at noon. It will be a historic event in the history of the parish and a memorable day. Very soon afterwards the new priests will be assigned by Bishop Murphy. The parishes that receive these new priests will benefit from their zeal and enthusiasm. In short, they will bring new life to our parishes. It is interesting to note that all five of the new priests are graduates of Catholic High Schools. Sean Magaldi and Andrew Garnett are graduates of Chaminade while James Hansen and Jeff Yildirmaz are graduates of Kellenberg. Alessandro Da Luz graduated from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip. Three of them attended St. Joseph Seminary in Dunwoodie and two were educated in Rome at the North American College. I hasten to add that vocations are often from public schools. As a matter of fact, Sean attended Mineola Middle School. When I was a young priest in St. Matthew in Dix Hills the first three priestly vocations were graduates of public high school and attended religious education classes. The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate in Washington DC tells us some fascinating statistics. 78% of the new priests served Mass and 7 out of 10 were devoted to the Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration. One of the defining characteristics of the ordinands is that they were involved in the life of the Church. They participated in parish activities and/or other things such as Campus Ministry. One very encouraging sign is that the average age of the new priest is 34. This is a swing from the recent past when those ordained were older. In our own Diocese all of the new priests are younger than 30! Naturally, the Church encourages older men who have a vocation to come forward and they are a great blessing. Some of you may remember Father Henry Leuthardt who served here at St. Aidan s as a pastoral year seminarian. He was ordained at 48 and is an excellent priest and is completing his first assignment at St. Joseph in Ronkonkoma.

4 One of the great factors in a vocation is the support of family and parish priests. That is crucial. The fact is that in vocations, as in life, all need encouragement. We are in a position to give that needed help. I urge you to do that. Your genuine interest, prayer and support may help lead a young person to the priesthood or religious life. Give it a try! And keep praying! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald To be good stewards we must be good shepherds, willing to lay down our lives for those committed to our care, not mere hired hands which run off, leaving the sheep to be snatched and scattered by the wolf. STEWARDSHIP (3rd Sunday of Easter) 05/04/14 $25,691 04/19/15 $22,932 (-11.13%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for Catholic Elementary Schools. 5 We are saddened to inform the parish of the passing of Father Damian Halligan s sister, Sister Jane Halligan. There will be a Memorial Mass here at St. Aidan s for Sister Jane Halligan this Sunday, April 26th at 3:00 PM. There will be a reception in the Upper School Cafeteria immediately following the Mass. All are welcome. Sister Jane Halligan, SSND HALLIGAN Sister Jane Halligan, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, died on April 9, 2015, at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Ct. at age 68. Jane Marie was born on May 16, 1946, in Palisades, NJ, the daughter of John Halligan of Jersey City, NJ, and Mary (Ferguson) Halligan of New York. After pronouncing her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1966, Sister Jane began teaching at Colegio San Agustin in Puerta de Tierra, San Juan, PR. She also taught at St. Rafael School in East Meadow, NY, and was engaged in pastoral ministry in the parishes of St. Brigid, Westbury, NY, and Holy Cross, Nesconset, NY. For many years, she worked as a counselor for Catholic Charities at Talbot House in Bohemia, NY. Sister Jane was preceded in death by her brothers. Jerome, John, and Kevin. She is survived by her brothers, Rev. Damian Halligan, SJ (Williston Park, NY, and Paul Halligan (NJ), and by her sisters-in-law, Patricia (NJ), and Catherine (Iowa). She is mourned by family members which include 24 nieces and nephews, her good friend Dolores Mayrose, and by her community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Burial was at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel, Ct. Memorial contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Atlantic-Midwest Province, c/o Mission Advancement Office, 345 Belden Hill Road, Wilton, Ct Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Bracken-Donovan- Spodnick of Bridgeport, Ct. REMEMBERING SISTER JANE Father Joe Schlaefer s phone call, telling us of SSND Sister Jane Halligan s death, brought tears to my eyes and a tug at the heart-strings of remembrance, remembering our own at St. Brigid, Sister Jane Halligan. Arriving in 1975 at St. Brigid Parish, she was a loving, outgoing, funny, prayerful and dynamic member of Father Fred Schaefer s team, opening the windows of our minds and the corridors of our hearts to the wonder of our God. As Religious Ed Director, she challenged us to be grown-up in our faith, teaching us to seek Jesus to walk with us on our journey keeping always an eye on the journey and an eye on Heaven at the end of the journey. She inspired and encouraged us to knock on the doors of our hearts, seeking new ways to find God and to bring Him to others, particularly the poor, the immigrant, the hungry and those who had no one to love or care for them. As a parish family, we grew and grew in mind, spirit and love! In our joys and sorrows, be they times of gifts or losses, Sister Jane was always present walking, guiding and teaching us to: - have a great need for God and others love and live life to the fullest it is God s gift to us walk with others, who hurt and ache for a sight of God say yes a resounding yes to the unfolding call of God in our lives no matter how young or old we may be. Dear Sister Jane, we were blest to know you! We were blest to have you as friend, teacher, counselor and lover of God and others! Rest in peace, dear Sister Jane we shall remember you always! Blessed are you! Blessed are we!

6 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION First Genocide of the 20th Century, Pope Francis 4/12/15 Marking the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide of at a mass in St. Peter s Basilica, Pope Francis addressed the massacres in the context of the contemporary persecution of Christians in the Muslim world. On April 24, 1915, the Armenian Christian genocide began with the Turkish Ottoman (Muslim) empire executing hundreds of Armenian intellectuals. Then, ordinary Armenians were sent on death marches through the desert, without food or water, many stripped naked. As many as 1.5 million Armenians, mostly Christian, were systematically killed during WW I in today s eastern Turkey. Bishops, priests, religious women and men, the elderly and even defenseless children and the infirm were murdered, said Pope Francis. Russia, France and 20 other countries recognize this massacre as genocide. The United States and Britain do not, however, most likely to avoid angering present day Turkey, their NATO ally. ( 4/12/15; 4/12/15) Religious Persecution Today - Bishop William Murphy, 2/20/15 My Dear Brother Priests: The atrocities being inflicted on the population of several countries in the Middle East and North Africa continue to mount With no prejudice toward the Muslim communities on Long Island and around the world, we all, Christian, Muslim and all men and women of good will, must be one in condemning these atrocities and standing as one in defense of religious minorities throughout the world I joined the Coptic (means Egyptian ) Bishop David and the Coptic Church of N.Y. at a Prayer Service. I assured them of our prayers and solidarity with them and with all the victims of what the terrorists call Jihad However we need also to let the President and elected officials in Washington to commit to bring an end to this violence and hatred God expects us and our nations leaders to be instruments of peace May Mary, Help of Christians, watch over and protect all her children. William Murphy Bishop of Rockville Centre, N.Y. ( 2/20/15) Events: Monday 5/4/15 at 7:00 PM in St. Bernard s Levittown - famed speaker and Constitutional attorney Kris Anne Hall addresses religious liberty and First Amendment rights. 7 Become islands of mercy in the sea of the World s indifference. -Pope Francis April 2015 Dear Parishioners, Pope Francis reminded us in his 2015 Lenten message that God s love breaks down the walls of indifference so that we may become islands of mercy and care for our brothers and sisters in need. The Catholic Ministries Appeal gives each of an opportunity to make our great Island into one of great mercy as we join together to support programs and services that reach out to people in need. People like Charles, a veteran who spent 17 years deployed around the world defending our freedom. After being injured in an incident involving nerve gas, he was honorably discharged. As life at home proved difficult, Charles began to struggle with debilitating bouts of anxiety and depression. His circumstances worsened and he couldn t maintain a steady job. Charles moved in with his mother, but within a year she died and his childhood home went into foreclosure. Charles found himself homeless. Catholic Charities Project Veterans Independence, which guides homeless veterans into permanent housing so they can live independently and have access to support networks, reached out and helped Charles. They found me and helped me to not only find a place to live - but they helped me to turn my life around, shared Charles. Providing homes and support for our Veterans is just one of the ways our Church and the Catholic Ministries Appeal care for our brothers and sisters in need. More than 60 critical and often life changing programs and ministries are made possible every day because of your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. To learn more about Charles, please visit and view the CMA video. Please remember that every gift is important and will help us to continue to grow our Island of mercy. Imagine how many more people like Charles can be helped if we all participate in this campaign. I ask you to prayerfully consider being a part of this effort by giving a gift of mercy in gratitude for the many blessing our God has given to you. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald Pastor

10 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA As I am writing this I can see daffodils and tulips in full bloom, finally Spring is here! May is the Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary and this year we will celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost on Sunday, May 24 th. What is more appropriated to celebrate that the parallel who unites Mary, who is called the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, with the gift of the Paschal Mystery. The Holy Spirit prepared Mary by His grace and fulfills the plan of the Father s loving goodness, as we read in the Catechism, in Mary, the Holy Spirit manifest the Son of the Father. And through Mary, He begins to bring men into communion with Christ. (CCC 722 to 725) Mary, a true disciple, followed Jesus in His Public ministry, pondering in her heart everything He said, supporting Him from the foot of the Cross and, after the Resurrection, praying with the early Church for the coming of the Holy Spirit. In the weeks ahead lets contemplate Mary, filled with the joy of the Gospel, guiding people to Christ. Let s pray especially that the wind and fire of the Holy Spirit may touch the hearts of those with little or no faith, so all will come to know Our Lord Jesus Christ. And what better prayer to recite this month than the Holy Rosary! This Prayer will bring a lot of grace to our personal lives and in our families, especially when we pray it together with our children. Find a place in your homes to put a Marian statue or hang a rosary from the rearview mirror of your cars to serve as a witness of our love to the Blessed Mother. Now I want to thank all the parishioners who are interested in our CDs, This month 10,000 CDs have been purchased from our kiosks!!!! If 2 or 3 persons listen to each CD imagine how many souls will benefit from these wonderful talks and teachings!
