March 15, 2015 DILEXIT ECCLESIAM I don t know whether you got a chance to see the Funeral of Cardinal Egan on television last Tuesday. It was not unduly long but was terribly impressive. All the New York stations covered it and there was some superb but not intrusive commentary. I was particularly struck by the absolute respect that was shown by the TV personalities to the priests who were assisting in describing the various rituals. You could hear in the voices of the men and women who were describing the funeral a certain amount of awe in the midst of the majesty and splendor of the Pontifical Mass. Cardinal Dolan was the principal celebrant and preached the homily. To say that the homily was outstanding would be an understatement. It was nothing short of magnificent and in this brief article I cannot do it justice. While there was a recalling of the stellar achievements and intellect of the late Cardinal, the homily focused on the Person of Jesus Christ and our Catholic Faith. It was absolutely stirring and at its conclusion I began to applaud in my room in the Rectory. It really was that good. It made you so very proud to be a Catholic and a priest! There was a story Cardinal Dolan told that I will never forget. It went something like this. He and Cardinal Egan were visiting the grave of a priest and on the headstone there was this inscription: Dilexit Ecclesiam. (He loved the Church.) Cardinal Egan commented: What a tribute! Cardinal Egan was all about Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. His whole life was consumed by preaching the Gospel. As Cardinal Dolan put it: For Edward Egan, Jesus Christ is God from God, Light from Light, incarnate in the Blessed Virgin Mary, the way, the truth and the life, the alpha and the omega, the resurrection and the life Sometimes I think that the Church is misunderstood by those outside the Catholic religion. They seem to think of it as some kind of an organization that they are fond of evaluating and offering critiques in secular terms. They do not understand that the Catholic Church was founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ and will last until the end of time. Let s face it: All sorts of people, kings, emperors and tyrants and all kinds of opinion makers have tried to destroy the Catholic Church. They have been singularly unsuccessful. May years ago Lord Macaulay, an Evangelical Protestant wrote this: Nor do we see any sign which indicates that the term of her long dominion is approaching. She saw the commencement of all the governments and of all the ecclesiastical establishments that now exist in the world; and we feel no assurance that she is not destined to see the end of them all. She was great and respected before the Saxon had set foot on Britain, before the Frank had passed the Rhine, when Grecian eloquence still flourished at Antioch, when idols were still worshipped in the temple of Mecca. And she may still exist in undiminished vigour when some traveller from New Zealand shall, in the midst of a vast solitude, take his stand on a broken arch of London Bridge to sketch the ruins of St. Paul's.

He understood that there was something special about the Catholic Church. Perhaps he did not realize that Jesus had made the promise a long time ago: You are Peter and on this Rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. (Matt 16:18) And the Catholic Church is very special. It is the Bride of Christ and was purchased by His Blood on the first Good Friday. Cardinal Egan loved the Church because the Church is Jesus in the world today. It is the sure and certain voice of Christ. As Jesus Himself said: He who hears you hears me. ( Luke 10:16) In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald All that we have and all that we are comes from the Lord. We are truly His handiwork, says St. Paul in the second reading, created in Christ Jesus to lead the life of good deeds which God prepared for us in advance. 7 Our Lenten Journey Fourth Sunday of Lent 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, Ephesians 2:4-10 John 3:14-21 Is it getting easier to spend time with Our Lord and follow him more closely? This week we are reminded, again, of God s undying love for us. In John s Gospel we are told that, God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. But we hide in the shadows of darkness and sin and it is us who turn away from God, preferring darkness to light. We think if we hide from God we won t have to face the truth. But God sees through the darkness and knows our hearts even when we turn away from him; and he loves us still. St. Paul tells us, By grace you have been saved, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God. For we are his handiwork created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them. There s still time to turn to the light so that our works may be clearly seen as done in God. There s still time to make that change of heart to live in God s light. You may be surprised how much clearer things are in the light. In darkness it is so easy to mess things up and make mistakes. But when we turn from the darkness we will be washed in God s love and brought to a newness of life. You can do it.

CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "We must stand up for the rights of our neighbor who is suffering from injustice; we must defend them all the more vigorously because we see Jesus present in them." Blessed Charles defoucauld Christian Persecution: Iran There are 450,000 Christians in a 79.4 million population in Iran, which ranks #7 out of the 100 countries worldwide where Christians face the most persecution. Only Armenians and Assyrians can be Christians. The largest population, Persian Christians, are considered apostates which makes almost all Christian activity illegal. Christians are imprisoned and receive extreme physical and mental abuse. Textbook Imbalance: When FL H.S. students were instructed to design their own Muslim prayer rug and recite the First Pillar of Islam prayer, written on the blackboard, upset parent, Ron Wagner, questioned the district superintendent. He learned that newly purchased textbooks were missing the first 9 chapters on Judaism and Christianity and the books started with Islam. These "manufacturer defect" textbooks were used anyway because the Pillars of Islam were "benchmarks of the state curriculum". Mr. Wagner, who describes himself as non-religious, reasoned that if the school were teaching the Lord's Prayer or the Ten Commandments, an atheist group would sue the school. The district claims to be investigating. (liberty news.com, 2/11/15; truth revolt.org, 2/11/15) Protections Repealed: On Dec. 2, 2014, the Council of the District of Columbia passed an amendment to the D.C. Human Rights Act, repealing protections for religious schools and colleges to determine their own rules regarding gay & lesbian student activities. If signed, the amendment will become law and likely force Catholic University of America and the Archdiocese of Washington schools to provide recognition, facilities, and perhaps funding to gay & lesbian student clubs that oppose Catholic teaching. (wsj.com/articles/patrickreilly) CFFR presents Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO of Liberty Institute, Plano, Texas, and Thomas Renker, General Counsel of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. They will discuss why there is a need to protect and restore religious freedom in America and how it is under serious attack in our schools, churches, military, and throughout the public arena. Where: St. James Church Parish Center, 429 Route 25A, Setauket, March 25, 2015 at 7:00 PM. For more information parishleaders@yahoo.com or call Please join us for the next CFFR meeting Wednesday March 18th 7:30 PM in St. Aidan s Convent.

" He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich." -Saint Paul (2 Cor 8:9). Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The season of Lent is a time for us to renew our heart-to-heart relationship with God and with our neighbors. It is also an opportunity to reflect more deeply on what it means to be Disciples of Christ. One way we can respond to this call and help others to experience the love of God is by making a gift through the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The Catholic Ministries Appeal provides the means for our Church to serve more than 600,000 people of God in our community each year. Your generosity would enable us to support our Church s efforts in evangelization, liturgy and worship, youth and young adult ministry, and programs for the poor and disadvantaged through Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach programs. It also helps fund critically important religious education programs while promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. This Lent, I invite you to reflect on the words of Saint Paul, "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor 8:9). His sacrifice is a model for all of us to follow as we join together to impact the lives of thousands of people on Long Island through support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Thank you for your continuing generosity and commitment to the good works of our Church. May God bless you with many graces during this holy season of Lent. With my prayers and gratitude, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Bl. Mother Teresa told us Spread love everywhere you go Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting... Let s live by this message, only when God is seen in us, people encounter and share Jesus in new ways. So keep sharing Jesus! Last week we were reflecting on the Cleansing of the Temple. The Temple was more than a religious meeting place, it was God s house, and when Jesus came and started shouting and turning things over and announcing judgment, it was shocking and terrifying, and then Jesus tells that I will destroy this temple and in three days rebuild it He is telling us He will destroy the most sacred place, so what was He doing and why? First: He was announcing that He is God. Second: He was bringing a NEW TEMPLE, the Temple of His own body. Today Jesus himself is where God dwells, and we, grafted on to Him, are temples of the Holy Spirit. Now we need to invite Jesus to come and clean what is in our Temple. What is the object of our worship? Is it money, pleasure, power or maybe our own ego? Remember: I am the Lord, your God; you shall not have other gods... It is our speech which shall be cleansed. Speech greatly influences how we think and judge, gossip shapes our behavior. What about our worship? Remember: Keep Holy the Sabbath day. Ask God for the grace to keep our Temple clean. He wants to give it to us. Experience the Lord in the Eucharist today and as often you can, it is the summit and source of our Faith! Invite a friend or family member to go with you to church today. Say thank you to someone in your life who you are thankful for this week. Pray for opportunities to witness Jesus in our coworkers, classmates, friends and family; one perfect way is to give away CDs from our kiosks, especially the ones about Lent and Easter. God bless you! Toti Conforti
