2 March 30, 2014 TREMENDOUS TUESDAY Tuesday was such a great day. As a matter of fact, I really wish you all could have been with me in the Cathedral for the Consecration Ordination) of Bishop Andrzej. Even the weather obliged the snow never came, but it could have been a trifle warmer. It was a fantastic celebration of the Church. Yes, there was pageantry, ceremony, sentiment, great music but most of all there was a gathering of so many people to celebrate the making of a new bishop and to witness the apostolic succession in action. There were so many impressive moments, but let me recount just a few. Towards the beginning of the actual ordination, Bishop Emil Wcela read the mandate from Pope Francis appointing the new auxiliary bishop. It was a tremendous sign that we are all united in Christ with the Pope and the Universal Church. The two absolutely essential parts of the consecration or ordination were when Bishop Murphy, the principal consecrator, and Bishop Gugliemone and Bishop Brennan, the co-consecrators, and all the other bishops present, including Cardinal Egan, imposed their hands on the head of Andrzej. Immediately after that Bishop Murphy began the Prayer of Consecration (the form of the sacrament) and in the midst of that prayer all the bishops joined in and said these essential words which with the imposition of hands made Andrzej a bishop: Pour out now upon this chosen one that power which is from you, that governing Spirit whom you gave to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. the Spirit whom he bestowed upon the holy Apostles, who established the church in each place as your sanctuary for the glory and unceasing praise of your name. After that the new bishop s head was anointed with sacred chrism and he was given the Book of the Gospels and the ring and the miter and the crozier, the marks of a bishop. Interestingly enough, that Book of the Gospels which Bishop Andrzej received was the one that was held over his head by two deacons as the consecratory prayer was said. A bishop is the servant of Jesus and the Gospel. It is his business to proclaim Jesus

3 Christ tirelessly. Bishop Murphy in his homily put it so well when he told the then bishop-elect that the world is in need of the message of Christ. While bishops, like each one of us, have their own opinions and ideas, what is important is the teaching of Jesus. It is far from easy being a bishop today. The bishop is an apostle of Jesus and must present the total teaching of Christ and His Church to an increasingly skeptical and hostile world. He must be a man of unlimited patience and unfailing commitment to the truth. Bishop Zglejszewski is a man of great intelligence, talent and kindness. May his episcopate be blessed with courage, enthusiasm and the protection of our Blessed Mother. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend Lazarus, He responded, This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for God s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified. Every aspect of our lives gifts as well as sufferings can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessings for ourselves and others. We are planning on gathering once a month. Any questions can be directed to: Suellen Peterson at (516) x9101. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA All human beings want joy! All our actions, what we do and say are meant to give us joy, happiness and a sense of well being. Most times we are going towards these goals in the wrong way, thinking we will find contentment if we fill ourselves with material possessions, social esteem, security and power. Now, if we think like a follower of Christ, we will see that Jesus became a servant for all of us, denying himself, taking the Cross. If we follow Jesus in this way, rather than of the way of the world, we will find the true joy that does not go away. Lent is a moment of renewal, denying ourselves, practicing humility, looking into the needs of others, practicing charity in a tangible way. When we decide to buy something we need, choose the one with a lower price tag and give the difference to someone in need. Let s empty our hearts of desires to possess things, earthly goods, security, and fill our hearts with the love of God which, in turn, will allow us to love others. This week, again, we have new titles in our kiosks. The Body and Blood of Christ by Dr. S. Hahn is an informative presentation of the biblical basis for the Church s teaching on the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. And how we are all a part of the Body of Christ. Anger and Forgiveness by Deacon Dr. B. McDonald who provides a spiritual and psychological prescription for overcoming the sinful anger that poisons the mind of Christ within, causing alienation and division. His practical wisdom shows that only by learning how to forgive can we hope to promote healing and understanding in our relationships and enjoy the blessings of a forgiving heart. These are powerful CDs, which I trust you will listen to and give them away. Do it as part of your Lent resolution. Remember the only cost is only $3.00, the price of a cup of coffee! And will nourish many souls!! Toti Conforti

Services are provided by the Catholic Counseling Center, a proprietary professional corporation, which is independent of and not controlled or supervised by the parish or Diocese. Confidential information and appointments are available by calling Dr. Giuliani at (631) or go to our website at CLARK HOUSE-Clark Botanic Garden Auxiliary Evening s Speaker will be Pamela Governale, Manager of the Preservation Projects at The Garden Conservancy Gold Spring, NY April 10th at 7:00 PM. LONG ISLAND/METRO RETROUVALLE-Most couples across the nation who have attended a Retrouvaille weekend tell us they learned about this program from their weekly parish bulletin. Many are afraid to ask their pastor or parish priest for help with their marriages. Others are just hoping time will help to make things better. They tell us that seeing the program announced repeatedly in their Sunday bulletin gave them the courage to pick up the phone and make the call. Most say that Retrouvaille was the lifeline that helped save their marriage and their family. Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? Retrouvaille helps couples through difficult times in their marriages. This program has helped thousands of couples worldwide experiencing ALL TYPES of marital difficulties. The next weekend will be held May 30th-June 1st at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. For information please call (800)
