SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Each year, every Catholic family throughout Long Island is invited to Serve God by Serving Others by participating in the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal is the main lifeline for more than 60 programs and ministries that serve 600,000 people each year, while allowing us to join together to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ right here in our own Long Island Community. The Appeal supports programs that: Help our young people grow in their faith and prepare for the Sacraments Provide quality education for our children Form our priests, deacons and lay leaders Feed the hungry Assist those in need after a disaster like Hurricane Sandy Provide affordable housing for senior citizens and people with disabilities As Pastor of St. Rosalie, I have witnessed the Catholic Ministries Appeal at work with the formation of our Seminarians, training of our Deacons, in our religious education program and in the number of families we serve through our Outreach program. All of these wonderful programs and services are a testament to our Parishioners throughout the Diocese who support the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The Catholic Ministries Appeal gives us an opportunity to all join together, as Jesus invites us, to Serve God by Serving Others. - Father Edward Sheridan St. Rosalie, Hampton Bays Your gift will make a difference in someone s life on Long Island.
A Message from Our Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During this time in which the Holy Father has named the Year of Faith, we are all called as Catholics to rediscover, and share with others, the precious gift of Faith, and to let this special time be an opportunity for each one of us to intensify the witness of charity, which is Faith in Action. Every day I meet Catholics from across Long Island who demonstrate their Faith in Action by responding generously and faithfully to the Catholic Ministries Appeal: faithful people who Serve God by Serving Others. You will read about many of them in this brochure. Last year, through your generosity, we were able to bring religious education to more than 110,000 public school children, prepare more than 3,000 couples for the Sacrament of Marriage, assist 36,000 parents to be fully prepared to have their children baptized and form 16,000 adolescents ready and eager to be confirmed in our faith. No other Diocese in New York State reaches as many people in their Sacramental programs. The Catholic Ministries Appeal also enables us to serve or deliver more than 500,000 meals to people in need, and provide support to our men in formation to become priests and deacons. I hope that once again you will respond to the Holy Father s hope that we share our gifts with others by supporting the 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Thank you for considering this request and please pray for the continued success of our efforts to Serve God by Serving Others. With my prayers and gratitude, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre
SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Living and Sharing Our Faith Many people ask me what more they can do to Belong More Deeply, to be a better Catholic, a better disciple. I tell them that supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal is a very good way to do that because you are taking the mandate of Jesus from the Gospel and you are making it come alive by the way the CMA supports the ministries of our Church. - Fr. Sean Gann St. Joseph, Kings Park After serving at Mass on Easter Sunday when he was in the fourth grade, Fr. Sean Gann announced to his parents that he would be a Priest when he grew up. That day, watching my Pastor celebrate the Eucharist, listening to him say the words of consecration it occurred to me very strongly that this is what I want to do with my life when I grow up. So it was not a surprise to anyone when he entered our Seminary in Huntington in Ordained in 1994, today Fr. Gann serves as Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Kings Park. My goal at St. Joseph is to offer people the same wonderful Church experience I had growing up; to offer parishioners the opportunity to belong to the Lord and the Church more deeply. I also hope that I can help them to look at the Church and Sunday Eucharist as the center of their lives. The Catholic Ministries Appeal helps Seminarians devote themselves fully to discerning God s loving will for their lives.
SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Living and Sharing Our Faith All of the Faith Formation programs that are made available to our 133 Parishes are in some way supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal. These programs include religious education, preparation for the Sacraments and other family ministry programs that serve the newly born to the adults in our Diocese. We couldn t serve our people without this Appeal. - Ellen Zafonte Associate Director of Children and Youth, Office of Faith Formation In her role as Associate Director of Children and Youth, Ellen Zafonte is responsible for guiding young people in their faith formation journey as they participate in religious education programs at our 133 Parishes. The goal of religious education is to develop an understanding of the Catholic faith by learning about its history, development, and practice and meeting our Lord in the Sacraments. This is a lifelong process that involves constantly seeking ways to connect, learn and participate. Working with catechetical leaders at our Parishes, Ellen provides tools, resources, encouragement and the support needed to prepare their volunteer Catechists. Catechists echo the word of God to others in order to deepen their understanding and lead them to a deeper conversion of heart and mind to God. As these dedicated volunteers work each day to foster and develop their Parish programs, we do our best to provide them with the information, resources, support and encouragement they need to fulfill their ministry. More than 110,000 children in public schools participate in religious education classes taught by more than 11,000 volunteer Catechists.
SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Caring for Those in Need When your children are looking at you and saying with their eyes Mom, fix this and you can t you lose hope. When I first came to the Parish Outreach program the staff gave me back my dignity. They called us by name; they got to know my family. They guided us to programs that could help us and they provided food and school supplies as needed. At a time in my life when I felt isolated and hopeless, coming to the Outreach was a blessing. Someone to tell me that it will get better those consoling words sometimes mean more than food and money they were life saving. The O Brians were a very typical Long Island family of six. They rented the same home for 18 years and Mrs. O Brian stayed home to take care of one of her children with special needs. Mr. O Brian worked two jobs, a full-time day job where he was employed for more than 18 years and a part-time night job. When the company that he worked for at night downsized, he was laid off. The family cut back and were doing fine until disaster struck again when he was laid off from his day job. Unable to find work, the O Brians began to struggle. First they lost their car and then they had trouble paying their rent and putting food on the table. The family was evicted from their home and placed in a hotel where the six of them resided in one room for a full year. Parish Social Ministry programs allow us to do what Scriptures tells us to do: to serve the poor and the needy and the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps us to do that. - Kathy Ryan Director of Parish Outreach, Maria Regina Church, Seaford Our Parish Outreach programs serve more than 100,000 people each year, and tens of thousands more last year who were in need after Hurricane Sandy.
SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Caring for Those in Need Without this program, I would probably be shut-in and in a nursing home today. Most of the seniors living here would be. But here we have planned activities that bring us together to socialize and participate in events. Without Catholic Charities what would I do? Soon after Carol retired she developed a serious lung condition. Her small pension was making it more and more difficult for her to pay her rent and utilities. Then she heard about Catholic Charities affordable housing for seniors. At 75, Carol moved into Catholic Charities Mary s Manor in Inwood where she found compassion, friendship, and a new home. She shared how energized she feels as part of this vibrant senior community. With the high cost of living on Long Island, Catholic Charities has endeavored to provide affordable, safe housing for seniors. The support provided from the Catholic Ministries Appeal continues to help us to reach our goals to serve our seniors. - Lynn Reddy Director Catholic Charities Senior Housing Catholic Charities is a leading provider of affordable senior housing. They also serve the basic needs of the poor, troubled, weak, and oppressed in the Long Island Community with more than 60 sites.
SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS Building God s Kingdom Because of my past experience, I was excited to become a Campus Minister and work with young adults and try to give them the same faith-filled experience I had during college. - Steven Cirronella Campus Minister Adelphi University Steven had a strong faith-filled home life so when he went off to college he wanted to continue to grow in his faith and get to know other students who shared that aspiration. The Catholic Campus Ministry program on his college campus helped him to do that. When I was going to college, I needed Campus Ministry to feel that sense of Catholic community, to be around people who all shared the same faith and shared my desire to do service projects for our community. Today, Steven is a Campus Minister at Adelphi University and is giving back by serving the Catholic students attending college there. Thanks to the Catholic Ministries Appeal we were able to bring Catholic college students from Long Island together for a retreat. It was a great way for them to come together and to see that they are a vibrant young Catholic group. This group is not only the future of the Church-but the here and now of the Church. This retreat was also a way for the students to grow spiritually and as a Catholic community. - Marianne Sheridan Coordinator of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry 3,000 students participate in Diocesan Campus Ministry programs every month.
