3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The 140th Anniversary Gala is set for Saturday, October 20th at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston. Please save the date and plan on joining with fellow parishioners past and present to celebrate this milestone in our parish s history. Tickets can be purchased by filling out the form in the bulletin and returning it to the rectory or sending it in by mail. Tickets are also available in the vestibule of the church after all weekend Masses. Item Two: We are also planning to have a Super Raffle. Only 400 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner will receive $20,000 and the parish will receive $20,000 (provided all the tickets are sold). Tickets are on sale in the vestibule of the church after all weekend Masses. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) aims to guide adults to full membership in the Catholic Faith. No Dues, No Registration is necessary. On Fridays, Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will lead the group on Friday mornings. Both groups use an easily accessible classroom in the school. The room has toys and books. Our goal is to create a relaxing environment for both parents and children to meet with one another. We then meet twice a week through June except when the school is closed. All are invited to come to one or both sessions. Info., call Mrs. Lyons at SACRED HEART LEISURE CLUB Our Leisure Club will meet on Wednesday, October 3rd 2018 Sacred Heart Church welcomes seniors every other WEDNESDAY throughout the year to our church hall. We provide a comfortable atmosphere where seniors can greet and meet one another. If you are not a member of the Leisure Club, we welcome you to bring your friends during the summer. The church hall is air-conditioned so invite your friends to meet here. We d love to have you. Danish and coffee are available. There is an entrance fee of $3.00. 5 ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS! It is our pleasure to welcome new members to the Rosary Altar Society. Our season has begun. Part of our mission is to encourage spiritual and temporal works of Mercy in our parish community while honoring our Blessed Mother. We dedicate ourselves to this commitment in all we do: decorating the altar, caring for the flowers and linens, reciting the rosary after mass, sponsoring a yearly Bridge to Life Baby Shower in October and assisting with the May Crowning. Our raffles enable us to make donations to various causes; our guest speakers, films, and occasional retreats inspire spiritual discussions at our monthly meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of every month, September through May. We thank all of our members for their tireless work and look forward to meeting new members who wish to join. FLU CLINIC COMING TO SACRED HEART Flu season is here. A flu shot makes it easy to protect yourself and your family. Walgreens Pharmacy will be here to administer both flu and pneumonia shots: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, noon to 2pm, Location: Church Hall Most insurances are accepted with $0 copay ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS!!! Anyone in the parish who volunteers in any position that involves children is required by our Diocese to attend a three hour workshop called, Protecting All God s Children. (VIRTUS) If you need to take the workshop, please go online to to find the listing for the workshops and to register. We are in the Diocese of Brooklyn. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Lyons at TACHS EXAM Students in 8 th grade during the school year wishing to apply for fall admission into Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn need to take the TACHS EXAM. Students attending Sacred Heart Academy will receive the information package in school. The test is designed to measure school aptitude and scholastic achievement in reading, mathematics and language. Beginning September 6 th you can pick up the registration package in the Office of Religious Education. The Exam will be given on Saturday, November 3, FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on October 14th at 9:30 am. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children that sing are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on Nov., 18th at 9:30 Mass. What is CLOW? During Mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. See what we are all about. Our parish is the sponsor of the BEST Boy Scout Troop in Bayside. Membership is open to all eligible boys regardless of school, religion, race ethnicity, etc. You must be 11 years old or in the 6th grade or higher to join. Parent s permission is required. We offer the opportunity to have fun, while learning personal responsibility, self reliance, confidence, leadership skills and teamwork. The Scouting program is designed to strengthen a boy s character, and through action and example develop citizenship, spirituality, environmental awareness, and community service. 9 REGISTRATION FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR IS ONGOING CLASSES began on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th. Our program is for children in public or private schools. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eight grade, older children and special needs children. If you wish to register a child for classes, please call Mrs. Georgette Lyons, Director of Religious Education at Registration is still ongoing for our classes. The registration form is available at the parish website at BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Sacred Heart Academy Sacred Heart Catholic Academy has the potential to earn several thousand dollars per year For those of you not familiar with Box Tops, General Mills has a program that pays $0.10 for every Box Top that we submit to them. Please cut or tear the Box Top Logo off the product. It does not have to be trimmed neatly, just be sure that you don t cut off the expiration date or product acronym. Leave your Box tops in the box at the main entrance to the church. The LOUNGE The Lounge Youth Group will not take place with middle school students during its usual time, however during the day on Thursdays, all young people are always welcome to stop by the rectory and spend time playing games, discussing, or helping out, with youth ministry openly. However those leaving eighth grade and entering High School are welcome to join the high school session on Sunday nights.
