3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK ITEM ONE: BRIDGE TO LIFE A representative of Bridge to Life will speak at all Masses this weekend to ask for our support of their Baby Bottle Fundraiser. Bridge to Life is a pregnancy resource center with locations in Flushing and Astoria, providing pro-life counseling to pregnant women who might be considering abortion. They also provide material assistance to thousands of mothers and their children each year. Eleanor Ruder, a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart who died a few years back, was the founder of Bridge to Life. Please take one or more empty baby bottles home, fill with donations, and return on the weekend of June 24 TH 25 TH. ITEM TWO: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY As many are aware, Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that seeks to build homes for those who could otherwise not afford them. Sacred heart has joined the Queens Coalition for Habitat in the hope of assisting in the construction of homes in Queens. To that end a representative from Habitat will speak at all Masses this weekend asking for our support. A special second collection will be taken at Masses this weekend to help in this important endeavor. Please be generous. Save the Date for a Habitat Weekend when volunteers will be helping to build homes in Southeastern Queens. No experience or expertise needed! This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special indult, in the United States, the time period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (March 5, 2017) to Trinity Sunday (June 11, 2017). SACRED HEART PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL The Parish Pastoral Council meets this Tuesday, June 13 TH at 7:30pm in the rectory meeting room. SECOND COLLECTION There will be a special second collection taken at all masses this weekend (June 10 TH -11 TH ) in support of Habitat for Humanity. SPECIAL COLLECTION There will be a second collection taken at all Masses next weekend (June 17 TH 18 TH ) in support of Sacred Heart s Social Action Ministry. Your donation to this parish collection helps support many of the services offered to parishioners and neighbors including our Meals-on- Wheels Program, Bereavement Counseling, and Pastoral Care to the Homebound. 5 CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word. What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at CLOW masses will resume in the fall. FAMILY MASS At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children s readings are used. Our Parish Children s Choir, performs at Family Mass. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. AROUND THE PARISH Sacred Heart Justice & Peace Committee RICE BOWLS The rice bowls that were distributed at the beginning of Lent have been returned and all the pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and bills have been counted. A check in the amount of $1, has been sent to Catholic Relief Services. Thank you for your support of this organization and your generosity. NEW MOMS Sacred Heart has a New Mother s Club for parents and their preschoolers. No Dues, No Registration. Meetings are held on Tuesday mornings at 10am in the Parish Center, located in the school. For infor., call Mrs. Georgette Lyons at (enter doors of school on 38th Ave.) SACRED HEART SENIOR LEISURE CLUB Next Meeting, June 14, 11:30 to 3:00 We re inviting all women and men who are seniors to turn off the TV and put down the paper and come join your neighbors, reunite with old friends or meet new ones while enjoying some social time in a convivial atmosphere. Play board games, BINGO or just enjoy neighborly conversation. Pastries and hot coffee/ tea available. We have a great 50/50 raffle. Admission is $3 at the door and dues of $10 collected yearly. The Leisure Club meets every other Wednesday. Our first meeting with Barbara was held in March. It was met with great enthusiasm. The topics that have been selected for the series are a direct result of the input received from those in attendance. So, if you are concerned about your own aging or the aging of loved ones, this on-going series will benefit you. Whether you are preparing for your own aging wellness, or caring for someone at home, or responsible for overseeing the care of someone living in an assisted living or nursing home environment, these presentations will help to provide you with the practical advice and resources necessary to accessing appropriate clinical and community care and support. PLANNING A FUNERAL LITURGY It s not uncommon for people to make prearrangements with funeral homes regarding their burial options. But have you ever thought about going a little further in your pre-planning? What about planning your funeral liturgy? Believe it or not, there have been a number of requests to do just that. So, the opportunity to learn how to plan a funeral mass and then to plan your own funeral liturgy is here. THE ADVANTAGE: You can communicate to your loved ones your preferences the scripture readings, hymns, and prayers that YOU WANT and that best captures your particular beliefs. You can identify preferences for pall bearers, offertory gift bearers, scripture readers, and who it is you want to offer a eulogy. Preparing your funeral liturgy in advance can relieve your family of tremendous pressure at a time of intense emotional pain. On your part, it becomes a final gesture of love and concern offered to family and friends. When? June 13th at 1pm Where? Rectory Meeting Room YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS Our Youth Minister, Brandon Morel would like to engage our teens who have now received their confirmation and integrate them into the life of the parish. We have a youth group meeting for 7th & 8th graders after-school on Thursdays from 3pm to 5pm. If you are leaving 6th grade and entering the 7th grade in the fall you are also welcome to attend these meetings. Join our High School Youth group. Meetings are held on Sunday nights from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. With pizza, games, video, and discussions we continue in growing a community of faith amongst our young people.
