3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK... The Second Annual St. Patrick s Day Parade on Bell Boulevard will take place on Saturday, March 30. The Parade Mass will be held at Sacred Heart at 8:00AM that day. All our parishioners are invited to attend the Mass. This year, I have been asked to be one of the Aides to the Grand Marshal. I am deeply honored by the Parade Committee for giving me this honor. The Grand Marshal is Chief Ed Kilduff, Retired Chief of Department of the FDNY. The other Aides to the Grand Marshall along with me are: Phil Brady, Martin Dolan, Betty McLoughlin and John Ryan. There is information concerning participation in the parade (so that the organizers have an idea of the number of marchers) and about ordering a Sacred Heart St. Patrick s Day t-shirt to wear on the day of the parade, in the inserts in today's bulletin. 4 AROUND THE PARISH AROUND THE PARISH SACRED HEART LEISURE CLUB Next meeting February 20th 12 to 3pm. Our club meets from 11:00am to 3:00pm in the church hall every other Wednesday. We provide a comfortable atmosphere where seniors can greet and meet one another. If you are not a member of the club, please feel free to come down and see what we do and who we are. A $3 entrance fee entitles you to coffee or tea and a Danish pastry. Games such as Pokeno, scrabble, poker, and bingo are played. Come by yourself or bring a friend. All are welcome! For more information, call Sister Kathleen at BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Next meeting March 5th, 2019 at 7:30pm. This group meets once a month on the first Tuesday of each month in the church hall. Enter on 215 Place between 36th 38th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For info., call Sister Kathleen at FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on February 10, at 9:30 Mass. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children that sing are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. Oil painting classes are being offered at Sacred Heart Academy. We will meet for (8) consecutive weeks, on Thursday evenings from 7:30 9:00 PM starting February 7th. A small starter kit with everything needed to complete several paintings is included in the cost of $150. If you would like to join please send in the tear-off sheet below along with your payment of $150 (Cash or Check made out to CASH ) and drop it off at the Sacred Heart Academy School Office. 5 CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on February 24th at the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses. What is CLOW? During Mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP We invite parents/guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s to join us to share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 13th at 10am Meetings are held in Sacred Heart Religious Education Office located in the school building. You should have received them this past week. NEW MOTHER S CLUB Monday morning from 10am to 12 noon. & Friday mornings from 10am to 12 noon. The Sacred Heart Parish New Mother s Club is for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues or Registration is necessary. Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will lead the group on Friday mornings. Both groups use an easily accessible classroom in the school. The room has toys and books. Our goal is to create a relaxing environment for both parents and children to meet with one another. We then meet twice a week through June except when the school is closed. All are invited to come to one or both sessions. For information call Mrs. Lyons at Sacred Heart FOOD PANTRY The food chest located in the vestibule of the church next to St. Theresa s shrine serves as a lifeline for the poor of Jamaica, Queens. The combined parishes of St.Bonaventure/Benedict the Moor rely heavily upon our generosity. On the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays of the month, the auditorium is opened to those in need and they do their grocery shopping. Items in demand are baked beans, prepared tomato sauce, corn beef hash, grape or strawberry jelly, canned tuna fish, dry milk, oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup. 6 SPECIAL EVENTS: Religious Education Classes are held on Saturday at 9:20am Our program is for children in public or private schools. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eight grade, older children and special needs children. If you wish to register a child for classes, please call Mrs. Georgette Lyons, Director of Religious Education at The registration form is available at the parish website at SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT Pondering the Word Please note the addition to our bulletin boards in the vestibule of the church. Each week the PONDERING THE WORD envelope will contain reflections on the scripture passages heard at mass. The entire front page focuses on the Sunday readings while the back side addresses the daily readings for the week. These reflections are intended to help us apply the Word of God in our everyday lives, challenging us to find the holy in the ordinary. Word of the Week Located in today s bulletin, WORD OF THE WEEK contains the following: a reflection based on one of the Sunday readings; a cartoon from The Sunday Flock and a sheepish question for pondering; and two Questions of The Week for one s own personal or communal reflection. Family Evening February 10th at 6pm Families are invited for food, fellowship, music and an encouraging message about building a family of faith. This meeting will replace the usual teens meeting for this date. Theology on Tap Night Our Youth Group has gotten approval by the diocese to host a Theology on Tap night for young adults between the ages of 21 and 35. We will hold the meeting on February 21st at 7pm at Monahan & Fitzgerald s Restaurant. The Restaurant is located at st Avenue, Bayside, N. Y The meeting will be held at Monahan & Fitzgerald s Restaurant in Bayside, on February 21st. at 7 pm. Catholic Youth Day March 30th On March 30th we will be attending the Diocese of Brooklyn-Queens Catholic Youth Day with the theme Ignite. The event is from 9am to 5pm at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School (500 19th St., Brooklyn, N.Y ) but we will meet here at Sacred Heart to travel to and from the event together. Tickets are $25 and we need to reserve our spot as soon as possible. If interested in attending contact Brandon at THE LOUNGE Thursday s afterschool from 3pm to 5pm. Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for Middle School students. Students can play games, do homework, eat snacks, and do various art projects in a safe space. THE SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, and play music.

The film is made up of footage of the Pope s visits around the world. It is also interspersed with the life of St. Francis of Assisi, the Pope s namesake and model. During the film, the Pope describes Laudato Si as a dialogue with science and emphasizes that we should be looking at the Earth, not as its Master, but as its Protector. After the film, there was a presentation by Rosemarie Pace, a member of Pax Christi, and Pat Mc Donough, a Sacred Heart parishioner, who is a member of Laudato Si, a committee in the parish. who meets for the purpose of promoting care of the environment. The focus of both presenters was on what we can do to achieve some of Pope Francis objectives as caretakers of the earth.
