3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK ITEM ONE: Candlemas Day February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord also known as Candlemas Day. On that day it is customary to bless candles to commemorate that Christ is the Light of the World. Blessed Candles are available for your use at home i.e., when the priest or EMHC brings Holy Communion to the house, during times of private prayer, as a source of heavenly protection during storms, etc. The minimum donation per box of candles (2 in a box) is $5.00 ITEM TWO: Feast of St. Blaise On February 3, the Feast of St. Blaise is celebrated on the Church s liturgical calendar. It is a tradition to have your throat blessed on that day. Those who were not able to be at Mass that day can have their throats blessed after all the Masses on February 4th. ITEM THREE: World Day for Consecrated Life All are invited to our mass on February 4th at 9:30 as we celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life. Consecrated Life Day is an annual celebration of the men and women religious who have committed themselves to serve the people of God within the Catholic Church. The women religious who worship here at Sacred Heart will publicly renew their vows at this Mass. May they continue to be inspired by the God they love and respond generously to the gift of their vocation. ITEM FOUR: World Day of the Sick White Mass AND THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM Special Blessing of All Health Care Providers Sunday, February 11, 9:30 Mass In honor of Our Lady of Lourdes and the WORLD DAY OF THE SICK, all health care providers and volunteers, as well as all employed personnel working in health care are invited to receive a special blessing during our regular 9:30am Sunday Mass. This blessing is offered to recognize all in the health care community paid and non-paid. During Mass, those in the congregation who are health care providers will be invited to stand to receive this special blessing. Bound by common beliefs, all who attend to the sick share in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. ITEM FOUR A: Food for Thought (In 2018, the 26th World Day of the Sick will be celebrated as it is every year on 11 February, the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Holy See has released the Holy Father s Message which is entitled Mater Ecclesiae: Behold, your son Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26-27_. In his Message, Pope Francis recalls that Health care ministry will always be a necessary and fundamental task, to be carried out with renewed enthusiasm by all, from parish communities to the largest healthcare institutions. We cannot forget the tender love and perseverance of many families in caring for their chronically sick or severely disabled children, parents and relatives. The care given within families is an extraordinary witness of love for human person; it needs to be fittingly acknowledged and supported by suitable policies. Play board games, BINGO or just enjoy conversation. Pastries and hot coffee/ tea available. Plus a great 50/50 raffle. Admission is $3 at the door and dues of $10 collected yearly. 5 CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on February 11th at 9:30am mass What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre- K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. NEW MOMS CLUB Sacred Heart Parish has a New Mother s Club for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration necessary. You can join any time during the school year. We now will meet on Mondays at 10am. Starting Friday, January 26th we will also have Friday meetings at 10am. Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will be available at the Friday sessions ready to guide your children so they can interact and socialize with other children through various activities. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. When he discovers the world s oceans brimming with plastic waste, he dives into and investigates the devastating impacts that plastic has caused to our environment, especially our marine life. We live in a world of plastic. Shopping bags, drink bottles, toothbrushes and even our clothes are among the everyday items made from plastic. But plastic isn t fantastic, and neither is the current state of our environment. It is up to us to embrace these changes and move away from the plastic culture. We need to get this problem under control. We need to be part of the solution! Our children and future generations deserve nothing less. This particular presentation will offer tips on how to adapt your daily routine and environment to minimize the challenges of agerelated decline in functional abilities. Tools and interventions to improve safety and help maintain independence will be shared. If you are concerned about your own aging or the aging of loved ones, this on-going series will benefit you. Whether you are preparing for your own aging wellness, or caring for someone at home, or responsible for overseeing the care of someone living in an assisted living or nursing home environment, these presentations will help to provide you with the practical advice and resources necessary to accessing appropriate clinical and community care and support. Primarily for Middle School students. Students can play games, do homework, eat snacks, and do various art projects in a safe space. The SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High- School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, play music. 8 VOCATIONS COMMUNITY AFFAIRS CALLED BY NAME Bishop DiMarzio has designated this year - the Year of Vocations. In an effort to encourage the young to consider a vocation as a priest or Religious Sister or Brother, the bishop asks us to participate in the Called by Name Program. If you know a boy or girl, young man or woman, who you think would make a good priest or Religious, the bishop asks you to submit their name so they might be personally invited to consider a church vocation. Just fill out a Called by Name Card available at the doors of the church - and drop it off at the rectory.
