3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK... Item #1 The Second Annual St. Patrick s Day Parade on Bell Boulevard will take place on Saturday, March 30. The Parade Mass will be held at Sacred Heart at 8:00AM that day. All our parishioners are invited to attend the Mass. This year, I have been asked to be one of the Aides to the Grand Marshal. I am deeply honored by the Parade Committee for giving me this honor. The Grand Marshal is Chief Ed Kilduff, Retired Chief of Department of the FDNY. The other Aides to the Grand Marshall along with me are: Phil Brady, Martin Dolan, Betty McLoughlin and John Ryan. There is information about ordering a Sacred Heart St. Patrick s Day t-shirt to wear on the day of the parade, in the inserts in today's bulletin. 4 AROUND THE PARISH AROUND THE PARISH SACRED HEART LEISURE CLUB Next meeting March 6th 12 to 3pm. Our club meets from 11:00am to 3:00pm in the church hall every other Wednesday. We provide a comfortable atmosphere where seniors can greet and meet one another. If you are not a member of the club, please feel free to come down and see what we do and who we are. A $3 entrance fee entitles you to coffee or tea and a Danish pastry. Games such as Pokeno, scrabble, poker, and bingo are played. Come by yourself or bring a friend. All are welcome! For more information, call Sister Kathleen at BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Next meeting March 5th, 2019 at 7:30pm. This group meets once a month on the first Tuesday of each month in the church hall. Enter on 215 Place between 36th 38th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For info., call Sister Kathleen at FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on April 7th, at 9:30am Mass. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir-Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children that sing are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, call Mrs. Lyons, at The Family Mass Schedule for 2019, is May 5th & June 2nd. THE LABYRINTH Those who go on a pilgrimage and who reach their destination, should feel at home, loved and looked on with eyes of mercy. Pope Francis March 11-14, 2019 The Church Hall is opened MONDAY through THURSDAY 10-12noon & 7-8:30PM The Labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool, a form of walking meditation. Lenten Evening of Prayer The Chants of Taizé Throughout the world, the name Taizé is associated with beautiful musical chant and candlelight worship. Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 7:00PM Join us for this HOLY HOUR consisting of musical chant, scriptural readings, deep silence (in total darkness), intercessory prayer and adoration of the cross.

5 CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on March 17th at the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses. What is CLOW? During Mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP We invite parents/guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s to join us to share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 7th at 10am Meetings are held in Sacred Heart Religious Education Office located in the school building. NEW MOTHER S CLUB Monday morning from 10am to 12 noon. & Friday mornings from 10am to 12 noon. The Sacred Heart Parish New Mother s Club is for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues or Registration is necessary. Ms. Patricia La Providenza will lead the group on Friday mornings. Both groups use an easily accessible classroom in the school. The room has toys and books. Our goal is to create a relaxing environment for both parents and children to meet with one another. We then meet twice a week through June except when the school is closed. All are invited to come to one or both sessions. For information call Mrs. Lyons at Sacred Heart FOOD PANTRY The food chest located in the vestibule of the church next to St. Theresa s shrine serves as a lifeline for the poor of Jamaica, Queens. The combined parishes of St.Bonaventure/Benedict the Moor rely heavily upon our generosity. On the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays of the month, the auditorium is opened to those in need and they do their grocery shopping. Items in demand are baked beans, prepared tomato sauce, corn beef hash, grape or strawberry jelly, canned tuna fish, dry milk, oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup. 6 Religious Education Classes are held on Saturday at 9:20am Our program is for children in public or private schools. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eight grade, older children and special needs children. If you wish to register a child for classes, please call Mrs. Georgette Lyons, Director of Religious Education at The registration form is available at the parish website at SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT Pondering the Word Please note the addition to our bulletin boards in the vestibule of the church. Each week the PONDERING THE WORD envelope will contain reflections on the scripture passages heard at mass. The entire front page focuses on the Sunday readings while the back side addresses the daily readings for the week. These reflections are intended to help us apply the Word of God in our everyday lives, challenging us to find the holy in the ordinary. Word of the Week Located in today s bulletin, WORD OF THE WEEK contains the following: a reflection based on one of the Sunday readings; a cartoon from The Sunday Flock and a sheepish question for pondering; and two Questions of The Week for one s own personal or communal reflection. SPECIAL EVENTS: Catholic Youth Day March 30th On March 30th we will be attending the Diocese of Brooklyn-Queens Catholic Youth Day with the theme Ignite. The event is from 9am to 5pm at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School (500 19th St., Brooklyn, N.Y ) but we will meet here at Sacred Heart to travel to and from the event together. Tickets are $25 and we need to reserve our spot as soon as possible. If interested in attending contact Brandon at THE LOUNGE Thursday s after school from 3pm to 5pm. Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for Middle School students. Students can play games, do homework, eat snacks, and do various art projects in a safe space. THE SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, and play music. For those of you not familiar with Box Tops, General Mills has a program that pays $0.10 for every Box Top that we submit to them. Please cut or tear the Box Top Logo off the product. It does not have to be trimmed neatly, just be sure that you don t cut off the expiration date or product acronym. Leave your Box tops in the box at the main entrance to the church. 9 2019 PURPLE CROSSES As of Ash Wednesday the side walls of the Church will be decorated with purple crosses. These crosses were made by the 3rd and 4th grade students of Sacred Heart Academy and Religious Education Program. LENTEN PRAYER BOOKS Lenten Prayer Books will be available at the doors of the church beginning the weekend of March 2nd and 3rd. Written on the inside cover is the name of a member of our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Program (RCIA). These individuals will become full members of the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil. Please remember in your prayers the individual listed in your book. Your prayers will assist them as they continue their journey to full communion with the Catholic Faith during Lent. SACRAMENTAL PRAYER CARDS Beginning on Ash Wednesday there will be baskets located at the doors of the church containing Communion and Confirmation Prayer cards. The children receiving the sacraments this year at Sacred Heart have written their names on the cards. We ask you to take a card and pray for these children and their families. The Sacrament of First Holy Communion will be celebrated on May 4th. The sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Saturday, June 29th with Bishop DiMarzio.
