3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The Parish Pastoral Council and I have also discussed preliminary plans to have a dinner-dance to celebrate this special occasion. Stay tuned for updates! Item Two: I have recently been informed that Bishop DiMarzio has assigned a seminarian to do his summer internship in our parish. Sangbin Alex Lee will be with us from Monday, May 14 to Sunday, July 22. Please give him a warm welcome when he arrives at Sacred Heart Parish. EASTER DUTY Easter Duty: After having received First Holy Communion, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special Indult, in the United States, the time period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (February 18th) to Trinity Sunday (May 27th). AROUND THE PARISH Thanks to all the generous individuals who made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish to date. So far, 107 parishioners/families have made a pledge to the ACA $48, has been pledged of which $42, has been paid as of Monday, May 7. Our goal is $91, There remains time to make a pledge. You may find a donation envelope at the entrance of the church under the ACA posters. Please remit your pledge and hand it by May 28 th so that we reach and exceed our goal before Summer begins! Also, please check and see if your employer participates in a matching gift program. If your employer does participate, please contact Msgr. Machalski for information concerning this program. Enter on 215 Place between 36 th and 38 th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For further information, call Sister Kathleen at MINISTRY OF CARE May 15 th at 1pm in the rectory. Ministry of care is a support group that assists all who have direct contact with parishioners who are either homebound or residing in a nursing home. There are a number of Eucharist ministers who take the eucharist to homebound parishioners who cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to pray and stay connected with others who minister in the same way. If someone you know is homebound and can no longer attend mass, the Eucharist can be brought to them. Contact Sister Kathleen at to make arrangements. MINI-RETREAT DAY Pope Francis s encyclical Laudato Si Presenter: Sister Suzanne Gallagher, RSM Saturday, May 19, am to 1 pm, Church Hall Inspired by Pope Francis environmental encyclical, the goal of this mini-retreat is gratitude to God for our abundant blessings and especially for the blessings of Creation. During our time together we will be invited to pause, pray and reflect on how well we care for our common home, God s gift of creation to us. RACISM is an enduring problem. It is prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one s own race is superior. Simply put each of us has some elements of racism within, conscious or unconscious. Join in the discussion WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR with Sister Deirdre Mullan. Sister spent 25 years as a teacher and administrator in schools during the height of unrest in Northern Ireland where she saw firsthand what prejudice and misinformed ideologies can do. EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT News from Boy Scout Troop 49 Joseph Medina a member of Boy Scout Troop 49 is currently working on his Eagle Scout project. He will be painting and restoring the walls by the Church stairs from the side door entrance on 215th place up to the choir loft. He will also be cleaning out a basement closet. Joseph will be accepting donations towards supplies for his project today in the back of the church. Thank you in advance for your support with my Eagle Scout Project. Joseph Medina

5 CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on May 20th at 9:30am mass What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre- K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at CLOW Mass Schedule: June 10. NEW MOMS CLUB Our Group meets TWICE A WEEK Mondays at 10am and Fridays at 10am. Sacred Heart Parish has a New Mother s Club for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration necessary. You can join any time during the school year. Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will be available at the Friday sessions ready to guide your children so they can interact and socialize with other children through various activities. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir - Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP Sacred Heart Parish has started a Special Needs Parents Group. This group is for parents / guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s. To join us on Wednesday, May 23rd at 10am. This is a group of parents/guardians who share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. The group meets in the Sacred Heart Academy Library located at th Avenue. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eighth grade, older children and special needs children.
