3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The 140th Anniversary Gala is set for Saturday, October 20th at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston. Please save the date and plan on joining with fellow parishioners past and present to celebrate this milestone in our parish s history. Final details to follow shortly. Item Two: We are also planning to have a Super Raffle. Only 400 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner will receive $20,000 and the parish will receive $20,000 (provided all the tickets are sold). More details to follow in future bulletins. Item Three: Next weekend Fr. Steven Bauer, from Mary Mother of God Mission Society will visit our parish to speak about the Roman Catholic Mission Churches in Eastern Russia. A second offering will be taken for the missions. In the early 1900 s the Russian Far East boasted a thriving Roman Catholic population. Many Russians, Poles, Lithuanians, and other groups inhabited the area and had built schools, hospitals and beautiful churches. After 1917, Russia became an emblem of the Communist era, a land without churches and without God. Under Stalin, all Catholic churches were confiscated and Dioceses closed Most churches were desecrated or destroyed. Catholics were murdered by the hundreds of thousands and their bodies dumped into mass graves. Our two American priests, Fr. Myron Effing, CJD, and Fr. Daniel Maurer, CJD, arrived in Vladivostok in 1992 to help re-establish the Church in this region and provide charitable assistance to the many poor. Now that the foundations have been laid, additional priests and sisters are joining the work, and parishes are growing and multiplying, very slowly, but surely. For the latest news on activities of the mission and the Catholic Church in Russia please visit the website at AROUND THE PARISH Thanks to all the generous individuals who made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish to date. As of July 16th, 225 parishioners/families have made a pledge to the ACA $82,678 has been pledged of which $70, has been paid. Our goal is $91, There remains time to make a pledge. You may find a donation envelope at the entrance of the church under the ACA posters. We now need $8, to reach goal. Also, please check and see if your employer participates in a matching gift program. If they do participate, please contact Msgr. Machalski for information concerning this program. There are a number of Eucharist ministers who take the Eucharist to homebound parishioners who cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to pray and stay connected with others who minister in the same way. If someone you know is homebound and can no longer attend mass, the Eucharist can be brought to them. Contact Sister Kathleen at to make arrangements. The Bread & Wine for this week s liturgies are offered in memory of Michael Caraher (Family) CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. For information, call Sr. Kathleen at CLOW masses will resume in the fall.

5 FAMILY MASS At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir - Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, call Mrs. Lyons, at Family masses will resume in the fall. SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP Sacred Heart Parish has started a Special Needs Parents Group. This group is for parents /guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s. This is a group of parents/guardians who share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. The group meets in the Sacred Heart Academy Library located at th Avenue. For information on this group, please contact Mrs. Georgette Lyons at Meetings resume in September. CALLING ALL COOKS If you like to cook, this just might interest you. We re looking for a few good chefs to help supplement our Mealson-Wheels program during the summer months. We will reimburse you and supply the tins used for packaging. You plan the menu and shop for the food. Each dinner would consist of an entrée, a starch, and a vegetable. If you are interested or have any questions, call Sister Kathleen at TIME TO REGISTER FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR If you wish to register a child for the school year please contact Mrs. Georgette Lyons, Director of Religious Education at Our program is for children in public or private schools. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eighth grade, older children and special needs children. Our Youth Group will be planning a trip on August 12th at 2:30pm with Hard as Nails Ministries/You re Amazing Missions for Faith and Family Night as the WNBA s Atlanta Dream plays against the New York Liberty. There will be a pre-game community fellowship with refreshments. 50/50 raffle. Post Game chat with New York Liberty players. Team Chaplin Yvette Hamilton and Justin Fatica (from hard as Nails Ministries). Tickets are $12 and we need to purchase for our group before August 1st. Please contact Brandon for more details. The LOUNGE The Lounge Youth Group will not take place with middle school students during its usual time, however during the day on Thursdays, all young people are always welcome to stop by the rectory and spend time playing games, discussing, or helping out, with youth ministry openly. However those leaving eighth grade and entering High School are welcome to join the high school session on Sunday nights. The SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High-School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, play music. 7 YEAR OF VOCATIONS COMMUNITY EVENTS CALLED BY NAME Bishop DiMarzio has designated this year - the Year of Vocations. In an effort to encourage the young to consider a vocation as a priest or Religious Sister or Brother, the bishop asks us to participate in the Called by Name Program. If you know a boy or girl, young man or woman, who you think would make a good priest or Religious, the bishop asks you to submit their name so they might be personally invited to consider a church vocation. Just fill out a Called by Name Card available at the doors of the church - and drop it off at the rectory. Names will be submitted to the diocesan Vocation Directors and the individual will be contacted COMMUNITY EVENTS SUMMER BIBLE CAMP ST. FRANCIS PREP /FRANCIS KIDS! A Summer Bible Camp for ages 4 7 (must be 4 as of Dec 1, 2018) July 23rd July 27th, am to 12 Noon Cost $100 This year s theme is Shine and Serve Join us this summer for crafts, bible lessons, music, play and fun! Each day will begin with opening prayer and song. The rest of the day will consist of four 35 minute sessions of music, arts & crafts, Play/Games and a lesson focused on our theme each day. Each day we will celebrate one of the four Franciscan values: Camp staff and counselors will be current faculty and students of SFP.
