3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The Parish Pastoral Council and I have also discussed preliminary plans to have a dinner-dance to celebrate this special occasion. Stay tuned for updates! Item Two: I have recently been informed that Bishop DiMarzio has assigned a seminarian to do his summer internship in our parish. Sangbin Alex Lee will be with us from Monday, May 14 to Sunday, July 22. This weekend Alex will be here to introduce himself to our parish community. Please give him a warm welcome to Sacred Heart of Jesus. Item Three: A special thank you to all of those involved in making our Holy Week and Easter services so prayerful. A great big Thank You to the Altar Servers, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, our Choirs and organist Vivian Wohlfarth, Ushers, the Rosary Altar for their hard work in making our Church look so beautiful and especially to our faithful sacristan Owen. A special word of thanks to the men of Pope Pius xii Council # 4255 muscle in assisting the Rosary Altar Society in decorating the Church. Item Four: Thank you to everyone who sent Easter greetings and goodies to Fr. Alex and me in the rectory. We appreciate your thoughtfulness. May the Risen Christ fill you with His peace! Item Five: The annual Diocesan MASS OF HOPE AND HEALING sponsored by the Diocesan Survivors Advisory Committee, will take place on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 7pm at the parish of Saint Nicholas of Tolentine (Located at Goethals Avenue, Jamaica N. Y. ) The main celebrant will be the Most Rev., Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn. All are invited to gather on this day, to pray for healing for all those who have been impacted by childhood sexual abuse WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead. Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God s call. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT NEXT MEETING May 1st 7:30pm Our Bereavement group meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the Church Hall. Enter on 215 Place between 36 th and 38 th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For further information, call Sister Kathleen at RCIA INQUIRY Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or are you a baptized Catholic who never received Confirmation and Eucharist? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process by which persons follow the call of God to faith and to unity with the Catholic church. Call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at MINISTRY OF CARE Ministry of care is a support group that assists all who have direct contact with parishioners who are either homebound or residing in a nursing home. There are a number of Eucharist ministers who take the eucharist to homebound parishioners who cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to pray and stay connected with others who minister in the same way. Our next meeting will be May 15 th at 1PM in the rectory. If someone you know is homebound and can no longer attend mass, the Eucharist can be brought to them. Contact Sister Kathleen at to make arrangements. CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on May 20th at 9:30am mass What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at CLOW Mass Schedule: June 10. FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on May 6th, at 9:30am. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir- Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. 5 AROUND THE PARISH NEW MOMS CLUB Our Group meets TWICE A WEEK Mondays at 10am and Fridays at 10am. Sacred Heart Parish has a New Mother s Club for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration necessary. You can join any time during the school year. Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will be available at the Friday sessions ready to guide your children so they can interact and socialize with other children through various activities. Please enter main door school on 38th Ave. For info please call Mrs. Lyons at SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP MEETING We invite parents /guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s to join us on Monday, April 23rd at 7:30pm in the Sacred Heart Academy Library located at th Avenue, Bayside. This is a group of parents/guardians who share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. For information please contact, Mrs. Georgette Lyons at LAUDATO SI -Care for our Common Home Consider attending the BAYSIDE ANGLERS WATERFRONT DAY on April 21 at 9 AM. Become a part of a community event to clean up the 2-mile shoreline in Bayside. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, paper grabber/e-z reach grabber and work boots. ARISE INVITE We have completed our 4 th session of the Arise in Christ program. There is one more 6-week segment left that will be held in the fall. In order to best evaluate the program itself and the effects it has had on parish life, there will be a meeting of ALL PARTICIPANTS on Monday, May 7 th at 7:30 in the church hall. It is prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one s own race is superior. Simply put each of us has some elements of racism within, conscious or unconscious. Join in the discussion WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR with Sister Deirdre Mullan. Sister spent 25 years as a teacher and administrator in schools during the height of unrest in Northern Ireland where she saw firsthand what prejudice and misinformed ideologies can do.

6 EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT News from Boy Scout Troop 49 Ryan Messer a member of Boy Scout Troop 49 is currently working on his Eagle Scout project. He will be making Toiletry Kits which will be donated to St. Joseph s School for the Deaf. Ryan will be making a kit for each student at St. Joseph s. Ryan will be accepting donations towards supplies to make up these kits. Ryan will be in the back of the church today if you would like to donate towards his Eagle Project. Thank you in advance for your support with my Eagle Scout Project. Ryan Messer The LOUNGE Thursday s after school from 3pm to 5pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for Middle School students. Students can play games, do homework, eat snacks, and do various art projects in a safe space. The SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High-School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, play music.
