Baptisms: Please call the rectory to arrange the celebration of Baptism. Baptisms ordinarily should not take place during Lent except in case of emergency. (2019 March6th April 21st) Marriages: Reserve and register date & time as soon as possible, at least six months in advance of the wedding. Pre-Cana and other instructional sessions are required for all couples. Ministry to the Sick: Sick calls and Communion calls on the First Friday of the month. Please call the Rectory.

3 December 2nd, 2018 First Sunday of Advent Parish Community News & Events Christmas Craft Fair: Beautiful Handmade Items Sunday, December 2nd 8:30AM-2PM All handmade items, Centerpieces, cemetery cones, crosses and wreaths. We will have a jewelry boutique, full line of polish bakery items and of course wide selection of kielbasa, kiszka, ect. St. Padre Pio Holy Hour and Mass Tuesday, December4th Program: 7:00 PM Holy Hour Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Recitation of the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Benediction, & Confessions. 8:00PM Holy Mass. On December 11th the Catholic Charismatic Renewal will be celebrating with Mariachis the vesper of Our Lady Of Guadalupe Feast Day. Starting with outdoors procession at 7:30pm Bilingual Holy Mass will be celebrated at 8:00pm. Delicious Tamales and Mariachis music will follow in the church s basement. All are welcome to join in this celebration. St Josaphat's Right to Life Committee is sponsoring its Baby Shower for Life this year from December 1st to December 16th on behalf of Bright Dawn Ministry. Sr. Dorothy Rothar, who founded Bright Dawn Ministry, provides sidewalk counseling outside abortion clinics, such as Choices in Jamaica, Queens. Thanks to your donations and gifts received from other parishes, Sr. Dorothy is able to organize a monthly baby shower at The Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston to provide the brave women who chose life much needed supplies to care for their new baby. The Baptism of the baby is also arranged by Sr. Dorothy. Please place your gifts of baby clothes for girls and boys, diapers and other baby items in the Carriage of Love placed by the side altar with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Monetary donations can be made by dropping off checks payable to Sr. Dorothy Rothar, CSJ in the Pennies for Life donation box in the back of the church. Oplatki / Christmas Wafers The Oplatki are large rectangular wafers, which are embossed with figures of the Christ Child, or other nativity scenes. The Oplatki/ Christmas Wafers are specially baked so that they may be available to those wishing a joyful Christmas Season to family & friends. Share in the tradition of Oplatki / Christmas Wafers, that are now available in the Sacristy or the Rectory. Suggested offering $5.00. Christmas Novena of Masses All the Masses on Christmas Day will be offered for the intentions of the Parishioners of St. Josaphat s. Envelopes for this Novena are in your monthly packets. Extra envelopes for this purpose are located around the Church. You may submit names of living & deceased family members & friends to be prayed for at all our Christmas Masses. 5 Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify Laudetur Isus Christus! Blessed Advent to all! The chill in the air, the smell of baked goods, Christmas lights going up all around us, all of these sights and smells of the season are truly great! I myself love this time of year. Yet, we have to be careful! If we celebrate Christmas every day from now until December 25th we will be sick of Christmas. Advent is a time for us to think seriously about Jesus Christ coming as Judge. At one time in history Advent was six weeks long and a time of strict penance; still practiced by Roman Catholics who follow the Ambrosian Rite. This time period was sometimes referred to as Martin's Lent because the Christmas fast started after the feast of St. Martin, November 11th making the Christmas preparation time 40 days like Lent which leads us to Easter. And so we must use this time properly: daily scripture reading, daily Rosary, daily Mass, the use of an Advent Calendar, Jesse Tree, or Advent Wreath in the h o m e are all good ways in helping us keep proper focus during this time of year so that when Christmas comes we will truly be able to celebrate the Christmas Season which begins on December 25th and not be tired and sick of it all. As a way of helping to prepare for Christmas I will offer the Rorate Mass. By tradition these Masses are prayed while the sun rises in a dark church illumined only by candle light. The symbolism is how Jesus illumines the darkness, brings Truth, and warms our hearts with His charity. Rorate Masses are said in honor of the Blessed Mother. They will be offered on December 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, and 15 at 6:35 A.M. as a Low Mass. Rorate Mass is not offered on the Greater Ferial Days In Christ, Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
