3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. I have requested that one of the Bishops join us on a Sunday in the Fall to offer a Mass of Thanksgiving as we thank God for His many blessings on our parish throughout these 140 years. The Parish Pastoral Council and I have also discussed preliminary plans to have a dinner-dance to celebrate this special occasion. Stay tuned for updates! 4 AROUND THE PARISH AROUND THE PARISH CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on April 22nd, at 9:30am mass What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at CLOW Mass Schedule: May 20 & June 10. NEW MOMS CLUB Our Group meets on Mondays at 10am and Fridays at 10am. Sacred Heart Parish has a New Mother s Club for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration necessary. You can join any time during the school year. Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will be available at the Friday sessions ready to guide your children so they can interact and socialize with other children through various activities. Please enter main door school on 38th Ave. For info please call Mrs. Lyons at AN INVITATION FOR GOOD FRIDAY, MARCH 30TH. FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on April 15th, at 9:30am. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. Parishioners are invited to join members of the Sacred Heart Justice and Peace Committee as they Commemorate the 36th Good Friday WAY OF THE CROSS organized by Pax Christi Metro New York. They will be joining other peace makers on the streets of Manhattan as they pray their way along the streets of Manhattan. A meditation at each Station recalls Jesus suffering and applies Christ s message of peace and justice to those suffering in our midst and around the world: the poor, the refugee,and the lonely. It is an incredibly moving experience. All are welcome to join the WAY OF THE CROSS procession which begins in the shadow of the United Nations at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at 8:30am on 47th Street, between First and Second Avenue. 5 LENTEN & HOLY WEEK COLLECTIONS LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence: All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday (February 14th) and all Fridays of Lent. Fasting: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. Easter Duty: After having received First Holy Communion, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special Indult, in the United States, the time period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (February 18th) to Trinity Sunday (May 27th). Easter Collection There will be a second collection taken at all Masses on Palm Sunday for your Easter Gift to Sacred Heart Parish. We depend upon your generosity at Easter time to help Sacred Heart meet the significant financial challenges we face this fiscal year. For your generous support in the past and for whatever you can give this Easter many thanks. Easter Novena of Masses If you would like to remember loved ones during the Masses of Easter just drop the special Easter Novena Envelope in any collection during Lent and Holy Week. Novena envelopes are available at the doors of the church. These envelopes are due back to the rectory by 3/25. The envelopes will be placed on the Altar for Easter. Holy Thursday The Holy Thursday collection (March 29th) is taken for the needs of the parish. Good Friday The Good Friday collection (March 30th) is taken in support of the Catholic Shrines of the Holy Land and for charitable projects for the faithful who suffer due to the current conflicts around the world. Easter Sunday There will be a second collection taken at all Masses on Easter weekend (March 31st, April 1st) in support of Senior Priests.
