3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: OPENING OF MASS BOOK FOR 2019 Nov., 1st and Nov., 2nd The Mass book for 2019 will open on November 1 and November 2. As we open the new book, I would like to share with you what Church Law states about Mass intentions and having Masses said for our loved ones, both living and deceased. Somehow, the custom arose in our parish of accepting more than one intention for a Mass. I am not sure when or how that practice started. However, the Code of Canon Law specifically Canon 948 states that you have one offering for each Mass. So, that means that there will not be the booking of more than one intention per Mass. That being said, in 1991, several bishops throughout the world, due to the dwindling number of priests, petitioned for a relaxation of the law. The decision was that the bishops could permit their priests to have a COLLECTIVE MASS. A COLLECTIVE MASS means that more than one intention is allowed at that Mass. Those requesting must know this and agree to combine their offering with others in a single Mass. Secondly, the time and place of the COLLECTIVE MASS must be made public. Bishop DiMarzio has given the priests of the Diocese permission to have a COLLECTIVE MASS. Therefore, the 11:30 A.M. Mass on Sundays will be a COLLECTIVE MASS. The intentions will all be listed in the bulletin and be read before the Mass as they are now. I can envision some Sundays where there will be only one intention at that Mass and others when there will be more than one. The offering for each name remains at $ The priest celebrant only receives one offering (referred to as a stipend) when he offers a COLLECTIVE MASS. The other offerings (stipends) go into a special fund called the Clergy Fund which is used to supplement the coverage of the monthly renumeration of priests for which the parish is responsible and, if possible, assist in the payment of insurance and pension premiums, which otherwise would need to be satisfied from ordinary parish funds. (The Clergy Fund is also where the offerings of Baptisms, Funerals, Weddings, All Souls Day, Mother s Day, Father s Day intentions are deposited). Item Two:: Order a Brick for the Prayer Garden Consider ordering a brick in memory of/or to honor a relative or friend. Order forms for the bricks can be found on the Sacred Heart Church website under the Announcements tab at sacredheartbayside-queens.org/ announcements/,be picked up at the rectory. Orders can be submitted up to October 30. Please mail the orders to Sacred Heart Church or drop the orders off at the rectory. After October 30, the next order for bricks won t come until the spring. A Blessing of the bricks that were planted in June 2018 will be held on October 28 after the 11:30am Mass. Those who requested the memorial bricks received invitations in the mail. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. Our club meets from 11:00AM to 3:00PM in the lower church hall every other Wednesday. We provide a comfortable atmosphere where seniors can greet and meet one another. If you are not a member of the club, please feel free to come down and see what we do and who we are. A $3 entrance fee entitles you to coffee or tea and a Danish pastry. Games such as Pokeno, scrabble, poker, and bingo are played. Come by yourself or bring a friend. All are welcome! For more information, call Sister Kathleen at The Altar Candles & Sanctuary Lamp for this week s liturgies are offered in memory of Agnes Venice (Venice Family) QUEENS FEDERATION OF CHURCHES The Queens Federation of Churches is an ecumenical organization that is composed of all the churches in the Borough of Queens. Each year the churches are asked to submit a name of a person to receive a CITATION for FAITHFUL SERVICE. Sacred Heart parish submitted the name of FRAN CATALANO to be one of the recipients this year. Fran is active in so many ways in our parish especially through her work with and dedication to the Rosary Altar Society and the Meals on Wheels Program. Fran will receive her award at an Ecumenical Brunch on Saturday, Oct., 27 at 10am. At SHIN KWANG CHURCH of NEW YORK located at Bell Boulevard. If you would like to come and congratulate Fran and participate in the festivities, you can purchase tickets at the cost of $45 per person. Please contact Msgr. 5 SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP We invite parents/guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s to join us to share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. Please join us for our meeting on Thursday, Nov., 8th at 10am Future meetings on Tuesday, Dec., 4th. Meetings held in Sacred Heart Religious Education Office Located in the school building. For info., please contact Mrs. Georgette Lyons at NEW MOTHER S CLUB Monday morning from 10am to 12 noon. & Friday mornings from 10am to 12 noon. The Sacred Heart Parish New Mother s Club is for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration is necessary. On Fridays, Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will lead the group on Friday mornings. Both groups use an easily accessible classroom in the school. The room has toys and books. Our goal is to create a relaxing environment for both parents and children to meet with one another. We then meet twice a week through June except when the school is closed. All are invited to come to one or both sessions. Info., call Mrs. Lyons at FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on Nov., 4th at 9:30 Mass. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children that sing are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on Nov., 18th at 9:30 Mass. What is CLOW? During Mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eight grade, older children and special needs children.
