3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: On September 11th, the 17th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our city and nation, a special Mass will be celebrated at 7:30pm in our parish. Most Rev. Raymond Chappetto, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, will be the main celebrant and homilist. Please join us in prayer for those who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy and for continued healing for their families, our city and our nation. All parishes of our deanery have also been invited to attend this special Mass. Item Two: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The 140th Anniversary Gala is set for Saturday, October 20th at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston. Please save the date and plan on joining with fellow parishioners past and present to celebrate this milestone in our parish s history. Tickets can be purchased by filling out the form in the bulletin and returning it to the rectory or sending it in by mail. Tickets are also available in the vestibule of the church after all weekend Masses. Item Three: We are also planning to have a Super Raffle. Only 400 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner will receive $20,000 and the parish will receive $20,000 (provided all the tickets are sold). Tickets are on sale in the vestibule of the church after all weekend Masses. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord please pray for the recently deceased: Thanks to all the generous individuals who made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish to date. As of 8/21/ parishioners/families have made a pledge to the ACA $98, has been pledged of which $85, has been paid. Our goal was $91, As you can see we have now reached our goal and are $7, over goal. Please make sure to meet your pledge commitment. Any donations received beyond our goal are returned to the parish 100%. There remains time to make a pledge. You may find a donation envelope at the entrance of the church under the ACA posters. Also, please check and see if your employer participates in a matching gift program. Enter on 215 Place between 36 th and 38 th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For info., call Sister Kathleen at FAMILY MASS Our first Family Mass for the school year will be held September 16, 2018 at 9:30 Mass. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children that sing are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, call Mrs. Lyons, at CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The first CLOW Mass for the school year will be held on September 23rd at 9:30 Mass. What is CLOW? During Mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. For information, call Sr. Kathleen at

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process by which persons follow the call of God to faith and to unity with the Catholic Church. For info., please contact Mrs. Georgette Lyons at SACRED HEART LESIURE CLUB Next meeting is Wednesday, September 5, Sacred Heart Church welcomes seniors every other WEDNESDAY throughout the year to our church hall. We provide a comfortable atmosphere where seniors can greet and meet one another. If you are not a member of the Leisure Club, we welcome you to bring your friends during the summer. The church hall is air-conditioned so invite your friends to meet here. We d love to have you. Danish and coffee are available. There is an entrance fee of $3.00. For more information, call Sister Kathleen at MINISTRY OF CARE September 18th/ Rectory Our Ministers of Care will meet at 1pm our Bakers at 2:30pm. Ministry of care is a support group that assists all who have direct contact with parishioners who are either homebound or residing in a nursing home. There are a number of Eucharist ministers who take the Eucharist to homebound parishioners who cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to pray and stay connected with others who minister in the same way. If someone you know is homebound and can no longer attend mass, the Eucharist can be brought to them. Call Sr. Kathleen at to make arrangements. ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS!!! Anyone in the parish who volunteers in any position that involves children is required by our Diocese to attend a three hour workshop called, Protecting All God s Children. Please just call ahead if you child wants to stop by during these summer months. However those leaving eighth grade and entering High School are welcome to join the high school session on Sunday nights. The SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High-School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, play music. For information contact Brandon Morel our Youth Minister at BOY SCOUT TROOP 49 Come join us! See what we are all about. Our parish is the sponsor of the BEST Boy Scout Troop in Bayside. Membership is open to all eligible boys regardless of school, religion, race ethnicity, etc. You must be 11 years old or in the 6 th grade or higher to join. Parent s Permission is required. We offer the opportunity to have fun, while learning personal responsibility self reliance, confidence, leadership skills and teamwork. The Scouting program is designed to strengthen a boy s character, and through action and example develop citizenship, spirituality, environmental awareness, and community service. Group meets Friday evenings at 8pm in the church hall. (enter west side of church). Membership is open year long. Interested boys and parents may stop in at a meeting to learn more. 7 TACHS EXAM Students in 8 th grade during the school year wishing to apply for fall admission into Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn nee to take the TACHS EXAM. Students attending Sacred heart Academy will receive the information package in school. The test is designed to measure school aptitude and scholastic achievement in reading, mathematics and language. Beginning September 6 th you can pick up the registration package in the Office of Religious Education. The Exam will be given on Saturday, November 3, BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Sacred Heart Academy Sacred Heart Catholic Academy has the potential to earn several thousand dollars per year For those of you not familiar with Box Tops, General Mills has a program that pays $0.10 for every Box Top that we submit to them. Please cut or tear the Box Top Logo off the product. It does not have to be trimmed neatly, just be sure that you don t cut off the expiration date or product acronym. Leave your Box tops in the box at the main entrance to the church.
