3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Item One: 2018 marks the 140 th Anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I have been informed by the Office of the Bishop that the Mass of Thanksgiving, giving praise to God for the many blessings shed on the parish throughout these 140 years will take place on Saturday, September 29 at 5:00pm. The celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Reverend Witold Mroziewski, J.C.D., D.D.. The homilist at the Mass will be Reverend Monsignor John Casey, former pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish. The 140th Anniversary Gala is set for Saturday, October 20th at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston. Please save the date and plan on joining with fellow parishioners past and present to celebrate this milestone in our parish s history. Final details to follow shortly. Item Two: We are also planning to have a Super Raffle. Only 400 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner will receive $20,000 and the parish will receive $20,000 (provided all the tickets are sold). More details to follow in future bulletins. Farrara Thanks to all the generous individuals who made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish to date. As of July 10th, 220 parishioners/families have made a pledge to the ACA $80,771 has been pledged of which $69, has been paid. Our goal is $91, There remains time to make a pledge. You may find a donation envelope at the entrance of the church under the ACA posters. We now need $10, to reach goal. Also, please check and see if your employer participates in a matching gift program. If they do participate, please contact Msgr. Machalski for information concerning this program. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For info., call Sister Kathleen at CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. For information, call Sr. Kathleen at CLOW masses will resume in the fall. FAMILY MASS At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir - Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, call Mrs. Lyons, at Family masses will resume in the fall. ST. FRANCIS HOSPITAL OUTREACH BUS Wednesday, July 18, am - 2pm Even if you have a primary care physician, you can take advantage of the FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS offered by the outreach bus. Screenings include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure and a simple blood test for cholesterol and diabetes (adults 18 and older). Patient education and referrals are provided. The state of the art outreach bus will be parked in front of the church. NO appointment is required. SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP Sacred Heart Parish has started a Special Needs Parents Group. This group is for parents /guardians with children/adults with all special needs or IEP s. This is a group of parents/guardians who share and exchange ideas in an informal setting. The group meets in the Sacred Heart Academy Library located at th Avenue. For information on this group, please contact Mrs. Georgette Lyons at Meetings resume in September. CALLING ALL COOKS If you like to cook, this just might interest you. We re looking for a few good chefs to help supplement our Mealson-Wheels program during the summer months. We will reimburse you and supply the tins used for packaging. You plan the menu and shop for the food. Each dinner would consist of an entrée, a starch, and a vegetable. 5 AROUND THE PARISH MINISTRY OF CARE September 18th/ Rectory Our Ministers of Care will meet at 1pm our Bakers at 2:30 Ministry of care is a support group that assists all who have direct contact with parishioners who are either homebound or residing in a nursing home. There are a number of Eucharist ministers who take the Eucharist to homebound parishioners who cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to pray and stay connected with others who minister in the same way. If someone you know is homebound and can no longer attend mass, the Eucharist can be brought to them. Contact Sister Kathleen at to make arrangements. TIME TO REGISTER FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR If you wish to register a child for the school year please contact Mrs. Georgette Lyons, Director of Religious Education at Our program is for children in public or private schools. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacrament of communion. This program is for children first thru eighth grade, older children and special needs children. The registration form is available at the parish website at SACRED HEART ACADEMY Registration for is on going. If you would like information about our Academy, or would like to tour the Academy, please call Mrs. Maryann Cooke, Principal at Sacred Heart Academy Box Tops for Education Sacred Heart Catholic Academy has the potential to earn several thousand dollars per year For those of you not familiar with Box Tops, General Mills has a program that pays $0.10 for every Box Top that we submit to them. Please cut or tear the Box Top Logo off the product. It does not have to be trimmed neatly, just be sure that you don t cut off the expiration date or product acronym. Leave your Box tops in the box at the main entrance to the church. 6 Please note changes to Lounge meetings during the summer... The LOUNGE The Lounge Youth Group will not take place with middle school students during its usual time, however during the day on Thursdays, all young people are always welcome to stop by the rectory and spend time playing games, discussing, or helping out, with youth ministry openly. Please just call ahead if you child wants to stop by during these summer months. However those leaving eighth grade and entering High School are welcome to join the high school session on Sunday nights. The SESSION Sunday Nights from 6:30pm to 8pm Takes place in the rectory basement. Primarily for High-School students. At the session students see videos, have discussions, play music. In the Fall, look forward to events also for parents and families involving youth ministry. For information contact Brandon Morel Youth Minister at. YEAR OF VOCATIONS CALLED BY NAME Bishop DiMarzio has designated this year - the Year of Vocations. In an effort to encourage the young to consider a vocation as a priest or Religious Sister or Brother, the bishop asks us to participate in the Called by Name Program. If you know a boy or girl, young man or woman, who you think would make a good priest or Religious, the bishop asks you to submit their name so they might be personally invited to consider a church vocation. Just fill out a Called by Name Card available at the doors of the church - and drop it off at the rectory. Names will be submitted to the diocesan Vocation Directors and the individual will be contacted. 7 COMMUNITY EVENTS CATHOLIC CHARITIES Preventing Suicide everyone can help. Catholic Charities Behavioral Health Clinics offer same-day access to individuals in crisis. Individuals may walk into a Catholic Charities Behavioral Health Clinic or may contact Catholic Charities Call center at for information. The Call Center s trained intake specialists will be able to immediately assist someone in crisis by linking them to a mental health professional. JOHN S UNIVERSITY The St. John s University Speech and Hearing Center will be offering FREE speech and hearing screenings from June 19th through August 8th. CAR DONATION Associated Vincentian Charities of Brooklyn Gives Back For each car, truck or van running or not the associated Vincentian charities will give back to your parish $75/$200 per vehicle. A Summer Bible Camp for ages 4 7 (must be 4 as of Dec 1, 2018) July 23rd July 27th, am to 12 Noon Cost $100 This year s theme is Shine and Serve Join us this summer for crafts, bible lessons, music, play and fun! Each day will begin with opening prayer and song. The rest of the day will consist of four 35 minute sessions of music, arts & crafts, Play/Games and a lesson focused on our theme each day. Each day we will celebrate one of the four Franciscan values: Camp staff and counselors will be current faculty and students of SFP. Each child will be assigned a group and a camp counselor who will be responsible for them from arrival to dismissal. Registration will be on a first come, first serve basis.
