5 MUNERA: TEACH, GOVERN, AND SANCTIFY Laudetur Iesus Christus! The Last Sunday of Advent! As adults we are saying Wow, Christmas is here already! while children are saying Is it Christmas yet? The weeks of Advent go fast and the preparations for Christmas are well under way. Our homes are filled with the smells of pine and spices. Perhaps we have already started baking and hopefully the shopping is finished! From December we have been praying the O Antiphons the antiphons which makeup the hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel. We have been praying that the Lord of Lords come, Root of Jesse come, Key of David come in some ways Advent is never over because we are always waiting for Jesus to come again but for now we turn and await Him for this coming Christmas. Since we have been preparing for this we ask; are we truly ready to receive Him anew this Christmas? The babe of Bethlehem is a reminder to us that just as a child needs to be taken care off so too does our faith. Traditionally the day before any major feast was a day of Fast and Abstinence. Christmas Eve is still held as a day of Fast by many Eastern Europeans and Slavs. Meat is not eaten only due to the Fast but also out of respect for the animals being the first to witness the birth of Jesus. Some cultures and traditions even refrain from eating dairy of Christmas Eve Wigilie as it is called in Polish. The breaking of the Christmas wafer is a hallmark of the evening meal too opatek; this tradition is heartwarming and can bring tears to one s eyes especially when the Vigil Meal is eaten for the first time with a loved one having gone to God recently. All of these memories and traditions bring smiles, memories, and sometimes a little sadness but, we remember that Jesus came to be with us in all actions and moments of our lives. As you break your Christmas wafer with family and friends know that as I do the same I wish you all prayerful and best wishes for a Silent and Holy Night.
