3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK ITEM ONE: World Day of the Sick White Mass AND THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM Special Blessing of All Health Care Providers Today, Sunday, February 11, 9:30 Mass In honor of Our Lady of Lourdes and the WORLD DAY OF THE SICK, all health care providers and volunteers, as well as all employed personnel working in health care are invited to receive a special blessing during our regular 9:30am Sunday Mass. This blessing is offered to recognize all in the health care community paid and non-paid. During Mass, those in the congregation who are health care providers will be invited to stand to receive this special blessing. Bound by common beliefs, all who attend to the sick share in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Some have inquired about the possibility of receiving a dispensation from the laws of fasting and abstinence. Our observances of these spiritual practices unite us with Catholics throughout the world as we commence a time of prayer and penance in preparation for Easter. For this reason, no dispensation will be granted from these universal norms. Catholics who desire to celebrate Valentine s Day should consider doing so on Tuesday, Feb., 13th, a day traditionally associated with festive celebrations.

4 AROUND THE PARISH The Bread & Wine for this week s liturgies are offered in memory of John Goettisheim (Maud Rowan) PURPLE CROSSES As of Ash Wednesday the side walls of the Church are decorated with purple crosses. These crosses are annually made by the 4th Grade students of the Academy and Religious Education Program. The 4th Grade students spend the year learning the Ten Commandments. We welcome the following children baptized into our faith community of Sacred Heart Church in the month of January: Michelle Brianna Harris Xavier David Langevin Juliana Caramen Terry BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT NEXT MEETING March 6th 7:30pm Our Bereavement group meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the Church Hall. Enter on 215 Place between 36 th and 38 th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For further information, call Sister Kathleen at LENTEN PRAYER BOOKS Lenten Prayer Books will be available at the doors of the church beginning the weekend of February 10th & 11th. Written on the inside cover is the name of the members of our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Program (RCIA). This individual will become a full member of the Catholic Faith at the Easter Vigil. Please remember in your prayers the individual listed in your book. Your prayers will assist her as she continues on her journey to full communion with the Catholic faith during lent. SACRAMENTAL PRAYER CARDS Beginning Ash Wednesday there will be baskets located at the doors of the church containing Communion and Confirmation prayer cards. The children receiving the sacraments this year at Sacred Heart have written their names on the cards. We ask you to take a card and pray for these children and their families as they begin their final preparation for the sacraments. The Sacrament of First Holy Communion will be celebrated on May 5th & May 12th. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Thursday, June 28th with Bishop DiMarzio. 5 LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence: All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday (February 14th) and all Fridays of Lent. Fasting: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. Easter Duty: After having received First Holy Communion, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special Indult, in the United States, the time period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (February 18th) to Trinity Sunday (May 27th). STATIONS OF THE CROSS - we will hold Stations of the Cross on Friday s at 7pm in church, starting February 16th. NEW MOMS CLUB Our Group meets on Mondays at 10am and Fridays at 10am. Sacred Heart Parish has a New Mother s Club for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration necessary. You can join any time during the school year. 6 FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on March 4th, at 9:30am. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on March 25th, at 9:30am mass What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre- K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. This particular presentation will focus on the differences between ASSISTED LIVING, SENIOR RESIDENTIAL HOUSING, and NURSING HOMES.
