3 PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F. Brosnan Epiphanies, by their very nature, aren t meant to happen often. It s not like the three kings set out to follow a star every year. But they did set out at least once and followed that star for who knows how long or how far. Epiphanies can be deceptive when we look at them from the outside because we get all caught up in the wonder of the revelation and overlook all the preparation that has been invested. I think I might be a heretic, or just plain selfish, when it comes to the notion of God s grace and our hard work. If I were an actor who just received the Academy Award, or a football star whose team just won the Super Bowl, I wouldn t be the guy who stands in front of the camera and tells the whole world that I m giving God all the glory. Nope. I want to acknowledge my bit, my contribution to the end result, and not just chalk it up to either sovereign grace or some extraordinary good luck. I think Thomas Edison was suggesting the same sentiment when he acknowledged that Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. The Magi must have put in a lot of hard work to come to experience their epiphany. They must have had to endure a good deal of hardship in their celebrated star trek across mountain and desert. The thing I like most about the story is that it is the great outlier in the narrative of salvation. It doesn t quite fit the plot. It upsets the accepted scholarship regarding the meaning of Christianity. How? The Magi weren t Jews. They didn t have the benefit of inheriting the expectation of Messiah and they didn t know from the Bible. Modern scripture scholarship seems obsessed at times with showing how the New Testament cannot be understood properly except within the context of the Old. Recent studies in Christology tend to view Jesus through the eyes of the Judaism of his day and set his story within the larger context of Israel s history. All well and good and completely apropos. But the Magi remind us that as true as it is that we cannot separate Jesus from his Jewishness, his appeal transcends religion and ethnicity, borders and culture, and even revealed religion itself. The gospel tells us that the Magi knew they had come to the end of their journey when the star stopped over the place where the child was. What does that mean, do you suppose? Even if the star was perceived to have stopped, it would have been high enough in the night sky to indicate any number of things that fell below its light. How could the Magi know that it was this specific place, these particular people, that marked the end of their star trek? They couldn t have known that this was their desired destination from the star alone. There must have been an intuition at work as well, telling them that despite all appearances and expectation, a baby born among animals, lying in a food trough, was what they had been looking for all this time. and an interior realization; its essential hallmark being surprise. And to their great surprise, the Magi were able to recognize in this most humble of circumstance inherent nobility; in this picture of human frailty - a divine presence; amid such dire poverty - priceless value. And all this came to them not from any knowledge of the Bible, or as the result of long hours of prayer, or even from faith in the existence of the one true God. Their epiphany emerged from that coincidence of hard work and the capacity to wonder, hallmarks of our shared humanity, available to all who permit grace to mingle with imagination. THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Response: Psalm 72 Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3,5-6 Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK ITEM ONE: SACRAMENTS RECEIVED According to the 2011 report The Changing Face of U.S. Catholic Parishes conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, and cited in Origins, the typical U.S. parish has 57 infant baptisms, 58 first communions, 44 confirmations, 14 marriages and 29 funerals each year. Here follows statistics for Sacred Heart from Natl avg B FC C M F Key: B = Baptisms; FC = First Communions; C = Confirmations; M = Marriages; F = Funerals An epiphany is that nexus between an external event

5 AROUND THE PARISH AROUND THE PARISH FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be celebrated on February 5th at 9:30am At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children s readings are used. Our Parish Children s Choir, performs at Family Mass. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at FAMILY MASS SCHEDULE: March 5th, April 2nd, May 7th, May 14th & June 4th. PLEASE STOP IN AFTER MASS TODAY AND HELP SUPPORT OUR CUB SCOUTS. CUB SCOUT BAKE SALE TODAY AFTER ALL MORNING MASSES LOCATION CHURCH HALL CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD Our next CLOW Mass will take place on January 22nd, at 9:30am. Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word. What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre- K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at CLOW MASS SCHEDULE FOLLOWS: February 12th, March 19th, April 9th, May 21st & June 11th. MINISTRY OF CARE Ministry of Care is a support group that assists all who have direct contact with parishioners who are either homebound or residing in nursing homes. We have a number of Eucharistic ministers who take the Eucharist to parishioners who due to age or illness cannot attend mass. For them and for our nursing home visitors this monthly meeting is an opportunity to stay connected with others who ministry in the same way. The next meeting will take place on January 9th, at 1pm, bakers at 2:30. For info., please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at

6 AROUND THE PARISH MASS FOR PEACE Sunday, January 22 at 5pm Our Sacred Heart Parish has become a "Parish for Peace" with the Metro New York Chapter of Pax Christi, the international Catholic Peace Movement. Our regular 5:00 p.m. January 22nd Sunday Mass will be our parish's special opportunity to pray for peace in our nation and in our world, planned and ministered by our Sacred Heart Justice & Peace Committee, with our J&P member, Redemptorist Father Francis Gargani, presiding and preaching. Consider joining us to raise our voices for peace. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Sometimes when words fall short, a gentle touch can heal a troubled soul or body. There is no greater gift than enlisting the prayers of another. This is what a prayer shawl is. The recipients of a prayer shawl are reaping the benefit of another s prayers for them. Each prayerful stitch that goes into the shawl now surrounds them. If you or someone you know would like to receive a prayer shawl, Sr. Kathleen at Watch the bulletin for the next meeting date. A GIVING TREE THANK YOU! In the name of each child who received the gift of Christmas through the generosity of our parish SECRET SANTAS, thank you For your generous support of the GIVING TREE. A very special thank you goes to Nancy Tognan who is responsible for the computerization of the Giving Tree. It is a wonderful system that tracks the gifts from the moment they are requested until they are packaged for distribution. We now can easily ascertain any missing gifts and address the situation so that all requests are filled. We would like to thank those who helped by sorting, wrapping, packing, loading and transporting gifts. A special thank you to Boy Scout Leaders Nancy and Lou Tognan who were present for the collection of the gifts. Also to Troop 49 and their leaders for their dedication to this project. We also would like to thank our art Girl Scouts who cut out and pasted labels on the tags and decorated the trees. PRAYING ON PAPER Do you get distracted when you try to pray in traditional ways?
