3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK ITEM ONE: Candlemas Day February 2nd we celebrated the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord also known as Candlemas Day. On that day it is customary to bless candles to commemorate that Christ is the Light of the World. Blessed Candles are available for your use at home i.e., when the priest or EMHC brings Holy Communion to the house, during times of private prayer, as a source of heavenly protection during storms, etc. The minimum donation per box of candles (2 in a box) is $5.00 ITEM TWO: Feast of St. Blaise On February 3, we celebrated the Feast of St. Blaise on the Church s liturgical calendar. It is a tradition to have your throat blessed on that day. Those who were not able to be at Mass that day can have their throats blessed after all the Masses today, February 4th. enthusiasm by all, from parish communities to the largest healthcare institutions. We cannot forget the tender love and perseverance of many families in caring for their chronically sick or severely disabled children, parents and relatives. The care given within families is an extraordinary witness of love for a human person; it needs to be fittingly acknowledged and supported by suitable policies. Doctors and nurses, priests, consecrated men and women, volunteers, families and all those who care for the sick, take part in this ecclesial mission. ) AROUND THE PARISH FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7 Response Psalm: 147:1-2,3-4,5-6 Second Reading: Corinthians 9:16-19,22-23 Gospel: Mark 1:29-39 ITEM THREE: World Day of the Sick White Mass AND THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM Special Blessing of All Health Care Providers Sunday, February 11, 9:30 Mass In honor of Our Lady of Lourdes and the WORLD DAY OF THE SICK, all health care providers and volunteers, as well as all employed personnel working in health care are invited to receive a special blessing during our regular 9:30am Sunday Mass. This blessing is offered to recognize all in the health care community paid and non-paid. During Mass, those in the congregation who are health care providers will be invited to stand to receive this special blessing. Bound by common beliefs, all who attend to the sick share in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. ITEM FOUR A: Food for Thought (In 2018, the 26th World Day of the Sick will be celebrated as it is every year on 11 February, the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Holy See has released the Holy Father s Message which is entitled Mater Ecclesiae: Behold, your son Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process by which persons follow the call of God to faith and to unity with the Catholic church. Call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT NEXT MEETING February 6th 7:30pm Our Bereavement group meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the Church Hall. Enter on 215 Place between 36 th and 38 th Avenues. Our bereavement support meetings are informative and educational and are designed to help the mourner through the initial stages of grief. For further information, call Sister Kathleen at LENTEN PRAYER BOOKS Lenten Prayer Books will be available at the doors of the church beginning the weekend of February 10th & 11th. Written on the inside cover is the name of the members of our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Program (RCIA). This individual will become a full member of the Catholic Faith at the Easter Vigil. Please remember in your prayers the individual listed in your book. Your prayers will assist her as she continues on her journey to full communion with the Catholic faith during lent. SAVE THE DATE: INSTALLATION MASS March 10th 5 pm Mass. Msgr. Thomas C. Machalski will be installed as the new Pastor of Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, March 10th at the 5pm Mass. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. SACRED HEART SENIOR LEISURE CLUB Next Meeting, Feb., 7th 11:30 to 3:00pm We re inviting all women and men who are seniors to turn off the TV and put down the paper and come join your neighbors, reunite with old friends or meet new ones while enjoying some social time in a convivial atmosphere. Play board games, BINGO or just enjoy conversation. Pastries and hot coffee/ tea available. Plus a great 50/50 raffle. Admission is $3 at the door and dues of $10 collected yearly. The Leisure Club meets every other Wednesday. SACRAMENTAL PRAYER CARDS Beginning Ash Wednesday there will be baskets located at the doors of the church containing Communion and Confirmation prayer cards. The children receiving the sacraments this year at Sacred Heart have written their names on the cards. We ask you to take a card and pray for these children and their families as they begin their final preparation for the sacraments. The Sacrament of First Holy Communion will be celebrated on May 5th & May 12th. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Thursday, June 28th with Bishop DiMarzio. 5 CHILDRENS LITURGY OF THE WORD The next CLOW Mass will be held on February 11th at 9:30am mass What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre- K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. NEW MOMS CLUB Sacred Heart Parish has a New Mother s Club for parents (includes grandparents & sitters) and their young children. No Dues, No Registration necessary. You can join any time during the school year. Our Group meets on Mondays at 10am and Fridays at 10am. Ms. Patricia LaProvidenza will be available at the Friday sessions ready to guide your children so they can interact and socialize with other children through various activities. Presenter: DAN MONAHAN, Social Worker FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on March 4th, at 9:30am. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. We celebrate Family Mass monthly at Sacred Heart. Readings from the children s liturgies are used. Children s Choir -Sacred Heart has a Parish Children s Choir which performs at our Family Masses. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. Our series AGING-WELL continues thanks to BARBARA SPEEDLING, a quality management consultant to long term care facilities, who has recommended and secured quality experts in the field. This particular presentation will focus on the differences between ASSISTED LIVING, SENIOR RESIDENTIAL HOUSING, and NURSING HOMES. If you are concerned about your own aging or the aging of loved ones, this on-going series will benefit you. Whether you are preparing for your own aging wellness, or caring for someone at home, or responsible for overseeing the care of someone living in an assisted living or nursing home environment, these presentations will help to provide you with the practical advice and resources necessary to accessing appropriate clinical and community care and support.
