Our Vision: Raising Expectations for our Christian Lives WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of thee Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is God s Eternal Promises. As he had promised, God sent Jesus, the Messiah, into our world that we might have a Savior. By faith, we believe Jesus will return at the end of time, and take all who believe in him to our heavenly home. TODAY'S WORSHIP (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) HYMN Savior of the Nations, Come... LSB 332, stanzas 1-4 (*) INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTIO ON (Please stand.) In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. -1-

2 C: C: C: If we say we have no sin, we deceivee ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinfull and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE The King of glory comes, the nation rejoices. Open the gates before him, lift up your voices. He conquered sin and earth; he truly has risen, And he will share with us his heavenly vision. The King of glory comes, the nation rejoices. Open the gates before him, lift up your voices. (W&P 136) (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. Let us pray. Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. ANTHEM (8:00 am) (10:40 am) El Shaddai Alleluia Singers A Tiny Child Will Come Youth Choir -2-

3 SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for First Sunday In Advent is from the thirty-third chapter of Jeremiah. 14 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. Jeremiah 33: :14 16 L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from the third chapter of 1 Thessalonians. 9 What thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may seee you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. 1 Thessalonians 3:9 133 L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) ALLELUIA (*) HOLY GOSPEL The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-first chapter. -3-

4 25 And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. 29 And he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that thee summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see thesee things taking place, you know that thee kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 34 But watch yourselvess lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come uponn you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand beforee the Son of Man. Luke 21:25 36 This is the Gospel of the Lord. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) HYMN OF THE DAY What Hope! An Eden Prophesied... LSB 342 SERMON God s Eternal Promises Jeremiah 33:14-16 APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. -4-

5 He descendedd into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. GATHERING OF THE OFFERING (The pastor will collect any special prayer request cards during this time.) Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, That we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and the dreams of all; Unite them with the prayers we offer now. 6 PREFACE The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we shouldd at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and byy His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermoree praising You and saying: SANCTUS -6-

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (*) THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; thiss cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. PAX DOMINI The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI (Please be seated.) -7-

15 LIVING WELL WITH ARTHRITIS Three Ways to Improve Your Daily Life 1. Learn all you can. Find trusted sources of news and information. Ask lots of questions of your doctor, your physical therapist and other healthcare providers. 2. Pay attention to your emotions. Living with a chronic condition such as arthritis increases your chances of developing depression. To head off depression, develop a network of family and friends who raise your spirits and who can help you keep active. 3. Take action. It s natural to be unsettled and upset after being diagnosed with arthritis. But those who live successfully with chronic illness accept that their diagnosis is here to stay and quickly start thinking about how to adapt their lives. Look at what you can do and what you may need to change (whether it s activities, diet, exercise, or stress level). Make a plan with your doctor and write it down.
