3 STAFF REFLECTIONS by Michael Harvey I am Lutheran hear me Laugh! I want you to do a little experiment for me. I want you to laugh for 30 seconds straight. Now some of you may think that is impossible, some of you are looking for a watch to make sure you don t go over 30 seconds by accident and most of you are thinking, I am not doing that! Humor me. If you are worried that laughing randomly for 30 seconds might make the people around you a little nervous, find a nice private spot and laugh for 30 seconds, and fake laughing works too. Just do it. Now if you were actually brave enough to give it a try, I know you are feeling better now. Do you know why? Endorphins! They are naturally occurring drugs God has blessed even Lutherans with that produce a euphoric feeling. (for those of you without word of the day toilet paper euphoric means Endorphins make you feel gooooood) Endorphins are triggered by laughter (real or fake), pain (natural morphine), and during other fun activities. Endorphins are totally legal and Lutherans do not have to feel guilty about using them. This is one of the things I love about Redeemer. For the most part we love to laugh and release those good endorphins. Laughter has been a gift of God here at Redeemer it helps us peacefully deal with many tough issues. I have never attended a meeting at Redeemer without laughing numerous times. By mixing laughter with serious business we can cover topics and challenges other groups would fight over. When we are not afraid to look at the lighter side of a topic, we keep ourselves from taking things too seriously. We realize that we are doing God s work. When Pastor Rance introduced the staff to Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage (Visit the church website for details and a link to register.) I could see how it would fit in perfectly here at Redeemer. We realize the power of laughter. It is easier to get angry at the differences of those around us but it is healthier and more fun to learn about our differences and thank God for them through laughter. Laughter and especially that joy that Christ puts in our laughter, is a painful thing for satan. On Good Friday satan could taste victory. With Jesus on the cross, he thought he crushed laughter, banished joy, snuffed out hope, and silenced love. There was no joyful laughter that day. On that day satan may have envisioned a future of pain and suffering, anger and fighting. Satan was ready to end the marriage union God had established, scatter Jesus followers to the wind and return the earth to the state it was in at the time of Noah. Barely three days later laughter returned. Jesus went to hell and back to save us and when he accomplished His purpose on Easter morning, He returned trumpet blasts of love, hope like a wild fire, joy returned to our hearts and laughter rang out! I would like to leave you with Psalm 126. I see it as a picture of our transition out of Lent and into the glorious joy of Easter. Psalm 126 A Song of Ascents. When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad. Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negeb! Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. May the joyful Laughter of Easter fill your home. Page 3

7 NEW: Prayer Chain for Redeemer "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). I am a firm believer in the power of prayer. Every day, events happen that bring great joy and great sorrow to our lives and the lives of our friends and family. During happy times and sad times, it is a comfort to know that other people are thinking of you and offering their support through prayer. Setting up an prayer chain is a great way to get prayer requests out quickly to members of our congregation. If you are interested in joining the Prayer Chain, please contact Lori Hameister at Littlebitmoo@hughes.net and include your name and address. I will be putting together a group mailing list of all interested participants. As prayer requests come through, an will be sent out to everyone on the e- mailing list. The Prayer chain is not designed to take the place of, or to compete with, our current and long standing telephone prayer chain. It is my hope that it will allow us to reach out to more of our congregation as I am sure some of our members would prefer communication over the telephone. To allow some time in getting the Prayer Chain set up, requests will not be accepted until April 15. At that time, if you have a prayer request that you would like shared on the new Prayer Chain, please your request to Lori Hameister at Littlebitmoo@hughes.net. Please put Prayer Request in the subject line of the and share specific information relating only to the prayer request itself. You are also welcome to send updates on individuals whom you have sent in a previous prayer request. Prayer requests and updates sent via the Prayer chain should only be submitted once you have permission to do so from the individual. You may contact Lori via or phone at if you have any additional questions. START PLANNING! ARE YOU SENDING YOUR CHILDREN TO RCLS NEXT YEAR? Fan into Flame campaign tops $44.1 million By Paula Schlueter Ross Fan into Flame, the synod wide campaign to raise $100 million for new Ablaze!-related mission projects, has netted $44,185,311, as of Feb. 20. Ablaze! is the initiative of the LCMS and its partner churches worldwide to share the Gospel with 100 million people -- "unreached" or uncommitted to faith in Christ -- by 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Authorized by the Synod's 2004 national convention, the Fan into Flame funding campaign is slated to run through the July 10-17, 2010, convention in Houston, although many of those who have made pledges are expected to honor them after that date. With just over 16 months left -- and the campaign nearly halfway toward its goal -- planners and others who've been involved in the effort say they are pleased with its progress. Ten LCMS districts have completed Fan into Flame campaigns, 16 are involved now, and several others are planning to start them. (Redeemer members committed over $60,000 to Fan Into Flame in 2008.) Memorials and Special Gifts $55 for Pastor Settle s Education Debt $67.30 for Interfaith Hospitality Network by Sunday School $25 for Undesignated Memorials, $20 for Good Samaritan Fund, and $5 for Upper Room in memory of Ralph Treder $10 for Undesignated Special gifts in honor of Polly Cunningham s birthday $10 for Fan Into Flame $217 for Gillard family in Uganda $ for Music Fund in memory of Jim Fister $52 for Debt Reduction in honor of Cy and Ardella Griebenow s 52nd wedding anniversary $360 for Gospel for Asia $50 for Library Fund

12 Church Council Highlights - March 10, 2009 As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we strive to live out, lift up and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Old Business: Scott Okuno reported that the Planning for the Future Committee has put together a Transition Team who will be working on implementing plans to reach our BHAG Goal. No date has been set for the first meeting yet. New Business: Bill Cochran announced that a Nominating Committee to fill positions for the year has been formed and will have their first meeting next Tuesday evening. Members of the Committee are Bill Cochran, Mary Hepinstall, Larry Stoen, Bryce Beckman, and Mark Gennrich. Please let Bill Cochran know before that time how many people need to be replaced on your Board/ Committee and if you have any suggestions for persons to fill the new open positions. The Financial Review Committee headed up by Andy Hanson, along with John Sprenger, Dick Valde and Bill Cochran went over expenditures for 2008, and a Financial Summary of that report was distributed. A copy will be given to all Board/Committee chairmen for them to take to their groups and look for areas where expenses could be cut in the future. The next item on the Agenda was setting a date for the May Voters Meeting. After some discussion, the date of May 17, 2009, was picked with a 12:45 P.M. start time. Hopefully, a group will come forward to serve a lunch between the late service and the start of the Voters Meeting. Pastor Jim reported that he had again been contacted by Pastor Maier from the District Office relative to the possibility of Redeemer becoming an Ablaze Covenant Congregation. As an Ablaze Congregation, we would commit to starting a mission a church planting. Nationwide, LCMS is looking for 600 congregations to commit. Pastor Maier would like to come and preach on a weekend, and also meet with combined Bible classes. Pastor Jim pointed out that this would fit well with our BHAG program for growth. After some discussion, the Council decided that our congregation would be open to learning more about the program, and there are some Fan Into Flame monies available to help launch whatever project we might decide on later. Page 12 Officer, Board and Cabinet Reports President s Report: Bill Cochran Bill talked about setting a goal, maybe not reaching it completely, but look what we found along the way! He related this to our BHAG, and what we might gain along the way to reaching this goal. Treasurer s Report Tom Burton Tom went over the current Treasurer s Report and noted that our contributions have dropped a bit in the past two months, leaving us with a negative figure at the end of February. He also pointed out that some figures that should have been put into the 2008 report had been erroneously listed in the 2009 figures because of closing dates involved. He suggested that in order to have an accurate comparison to years past, and months past, the final 2008 Treasurer s Report that had been distributed at the last Voters Meeting be restated to correct the figures. A motion was made, seconded and passed that this restatement be done and corrected reports will be distributed at the May Voters Meeting. Church Growth Judy Lee 26 new members will be accepted into membership on May 22. Also the new name tags have been very well received, and another order has been placed for more as the first supply sold out fast. Board of Stewardship Kristie Klatt This Board discussed ways to encourage our congregational members to keep up their financial pledges if at all possible during the current economy. Various ways had been suggested which will be further studied, e.g., using to keep in contact with members with the Resource, Financial Statements, and perhaps ordering the Lutheran Witness in bulk instead of paying for each member s subscription separately, and those who are interested in the magazine could pick them up at church. She also reminded chairmen of Boards/Committees to follow-up with those persons who had expressed an interest in their area on the recent Time and Talent sheets that were distributed, especially those from new members who may have volunteered their time and talents for the first time. Kristie also had a calendar on which groups can sign up for a weekend to display information about their particular group in the Narthex. The calendar will be in the office with Chris for you to sign up. Board of Education Michael Harvey Plans for this summer s VBS are in full swing. The Board

15 St. Matthew s EL COMEDOR POPULAR Soup Kitchen - $33,000 St. Matthew Lutheran Church is located in Chicago s lower west side, six miles from glamorous downtown Chicago s Magnificent Mile. In response to an increase in unemployment and homelessness in the surrounding neighborhood, the church organized the soup kitchen El Comedor Popular under the leadership of Maria Luisa Leal, St. Matthew s Director of Community Services. With the help of the Mexican families in the congregation, funds were raised through rummage sales, Mexican food catering services, donations from friends and other Lutheran congregations. Over the last 15 years, approximately 216,000 hot meals have been served to the homeless, the unemployed, seniors and children of Chicago s largest Hispanic community. Before meals are served, the Reverend Julio A. Loza shares God s Word, devotions and prayers to nourish the body and souls of the hungry. We are the poor feeding the poor, Rev. Loza says without exaggeration. St. Matthew s Word and Sacrament ministry, El Comedor Popular, was organized as, and remains, a faithbased community mission feeding thousands who are hungry. In September 2005, St Matthew stepped out in faith to organize a soup kitchen in La Barca, Mexico, to feed an average of 130 people, most of them children. Some St. Matthew members have roots in the poverty stricken town. Pastor Loza makes trips to La Barca to conduct worship services for the families. God has blessed a miracle of love beyond U.S. borders where people are hungry for food and God s Word of faith in Jesus, forgiveness and salvation for their souls. In 1999, St. Matthew Lutheran Church was granted the Making a World of Difference award by the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod World Relief and Human Care. At the Northern Illinois District Convention in 2006, Maria L. Leal, St. Matthew s Director of Community Service, was honored with the Presidential Award for helping St. Matthew nourish the body and souls of the homeless and hungry in Chicago. Page 15

18 Rochester Central Lutheran School April 2009 Preparing for tomorrow with a Christ-centered education today! RCLS is a ministry of Family of Christ, Grace, Holy Cross and Trinity Lutheran churches. MR. PAHLKOTTER S THOUGHTS..One Wednesday, I had the opportunity to attend the 4 pm Lenten service at Grace Lutheran Church, one of our four RCLS association or partner churches. My family and I had been invited to attend worship and then the Lenten meal supporting RCLS. My two youngest children and I drove to church after school. Both of the kids were excited. Olivia told me she could already taste the fried chicken that was to be served at the meal immediately following worship. As we approached the church, Gavin said, That s my church. I love this church. I found this interesting as we attend Family of Christ Lutheran Church, another of the partner churches, and Gavin tells me weekly that he loves Family of Christ. As we talked, the children pointed out to me that we are blessed because we belong to many churches. They pointed out that RCLS has four partner churches as well as others that are supportive. In their minds, these are their churches and the pastors are their pastors. They believe we belong to all of these churches and they see this as a blessing. This was moving to me especially to understand that they were excited not just about fried chicken but attending one of their churches. This is the blessing of an association a partnership. We have come together as God s people for the purpose of working together in our missions to share the good news of Jesus Christ with Rochester and to fulfill the mission of RCLS Preparing for tomorrow with a Christ-centered education today. As we celebrated National Lutheran Schools Week earlier this month, not only did we celebrate the blessing of Lutheran schools across the nation and world, we celebrate the blessings of our very own Lutheran school, RCLS, and the blessings of the association partnership family. I thank God that we are all a part of God s family. I thank God that He welcomes us all to be a part of His family for eternity. I thank God that we can all share His plan for salvation with all who desperately need Him. This is His ministry. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 In Christ, Mr. Pahlkotter, II Principal MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA is Tuesday, March 24! Grades K 5 will be presenting an extravaganza of music beginning at 6:30 pm in the school gymnasium. ENROLLMENT FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR is going very well! Sign up today on the Youth bulletin board or contact Curt Walter ( ). Come join us for some fun! Y.E.S. (Youth-Enlightened-Encouraged-Enthusiastically Led by the Spirit) The Y.E.S. group met on Sunday, March 15. They did some singing with Michael and Justin. Julie then led them in a Bible walk through some of the events in the life of Jesus and where they happened in the Holy Land. Each group located the area on the map where the activity happened that they were assigned and also explained what the activity was, such as the Last Supper. Each person was then given a cross keychain that they were able to decorate and keep. I am looking for 4 families who would be willing to do part of the meal. If you are willing to do one of these, please contact Lynora as soon as possible. The daughter answered, Don t be scared, you ll get your quilt. Needless to say, the mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the Mom asked him what that morning s Sunday School lesson was about. He said, Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming. Somebody once said there are only two kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up in the morning and say, Good Moring, Lord, and there are those who wake up in the morning and say, Good Lord, it s morning. Page
