1 The Flaming Times January 2019 Houlton United Methodist Church By the power of God s Holy Spirit, we are bridging the gap between young, old, the broken, the lost and Jesus Christ so that Christ s love is experienced, Christ s teaching is understood and Christ s healing is a reality. Before I Die, I Want to ~~ Pastor Victor Han ~~ Last year my family and I spent our summer vacation in PEI. At the Guild in Charlottetown we found a huge, interesting wall, titled, Before I Die And people were invited to complete the following sentence: Before I die, I want to. Some of them on the wall read as follows: Before I die, I want to make a difference. Before I die, I want to retire. Before I die, I want to travel the world. Before I die, I want to save a life. Before I die, l want to learn to dance. Before I Die is an art project that invites passerby to reflect upon their mortality and consider the things which matter most. Now this project has become a global movement in over 4,000 cities, 78 countries, and 36 languages. Candy Chang, who created the first Before I Die wall on an abandoned house in New Orleans after the death of someone she loved, says, Contemplating death really clarifies my life and regularly contemplating death has been a really powerful tool for me to restore perspective and remember the things that make my life meaningful to me. Contemplating death is not something to make us depressed. Rather, it can lead to life, abundant life. As we prepare to die well, we begin to live fully, by focusing on things of life that really matter. In this respect, dying well is to live fully. The New Year just began. It s a time to restore eternal perspective and remember the things that make life meaningful in Christ. You are invited to HUMC New Year s Retreat (Saturday, January 12, 9:00 am 12:00 pm). We gather together to begin this year with Jesus. We gather together to begin with the end in mind. It will be a fun, relaxing, meaningful time. As I close, I want to share part of the poem, If I Knew Then What I know Now, (Kimberly Kirberger) that I always read on New Year s Day:
2 I would enjoy more worry less. I wouldn t worry so much about what other people were thinking. I would play more, fret less. I would know how much my parents love me and I would believe that they are doing the best they can. I wouldn t be afraid of acting like a kid. I would be braver. I would look for the good qualities in everyone and enjoy them for those. I would take dance lessons. I would enjoy kissing. Really enjoy it. I would be more appreciative and grateful. for sure. 2 If you knew then what you know now, how would you live differently? How would you complete the sentence? Before I die, I want to. - Your Travel Companion, Pastor Victor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From My Library to Yours: The Life God Blesses (Gordon MacDonald) ~~ book review by Pastor Victor ~~ In this book author and pastor Gordon MacDonald asks the question, Are we prepared to weather the storms of life? Then, he steers us toward the disciplines, convictions, silence, beauty, and spirit that feed and prepare the soul to recognize and receive God's blessing. For me personally, my favorite part is chapter 7, What kind of an old man do you want to be? This question is not about where you want to live in your older years. It is not about the matter of finances. Rather, this question has to do with character, personality, and a style of being. The author said he started counting other older people who were at their very best in their twilight years. Then he said, One thing quickly became clear. I have known a lot of old men, but my list of emulatable old men was alarmingly short. How about you? Who is an older person you would like to emulate? What about them makes you want to be like them? What does "finishing well" mean to you? What adjustments will you need to make to finish well? As we ask ourselves those meaningful questions, MacDonald leads us through the steps that are necessary to develop a mature soul and to lead a blessed life.
3 HUMC Missions for January 2019 In January our Share the Harvest barrel offering will be used for the work of the mission "Empowerment International Christian Ministries" (EICM) and Robson and Mary Mulumbe, missionaries working in Malawi. 3 Quote from Robson Mulumbe, "We are excited to announce that Mary is pregnant! The birth is expected in early June, and so we ve changed our travel plans. Mary will stay with her family in Maine, while I head back to Malawi at the end of December. I will join Mary in late spring in anticipation of the baby s arrival. Please pray with us, as we prepare for Baby Mulumbe!" God has done great things in Malawi in 2018! Mary and Robson have been searching for land to build an orphanage and networking to build awareness of our ministry. Thank you for your partnership in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
