The monthly newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran Church-Rochester, Minnesota Growing In Faith Rooted in Christ The Board of Stewardship and our church staff would like to thank everyone in our church family who stepped out in faith and gave their pledges during Loyalty Sunday. In these trying times, it can be a challenge to commit a portion of our income, our time and our talent to the Lord s work. But as Christians, we know that God is faithful. He s saved us by His Son s blood and will always be there for us. That s why we can freely give of ourselves because of the gift of Jesus Himself! Mission Statement As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ -welcoming all into our family of believers. If you didn t get an opportunity to turn in your pledge, it s not too late. Stop by the church office any time to drop one off or to fill one out. We ve got extra copies available if you need one. And many thanks for your commitment to Redeemer s family and to the Lord and for all that you do to glorify God s Name in this place! 3 By Pastor Jim Heining You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 Are we ready once again? That is the question that Pastor Peter Meier has been asking of us for several months now. Are we ready to be designated an Ablaze Covenant Congregation. I believe that we should consider ourselves honored to have been asked. Redeemer has a rich heritage of outreach, having been involved in the starting of Grace, Christ, Holy Cross, Our Saviors in Eyota, and most recently Family of Christ. We take seriously our commitment to District and Synod missions, went above and beyond with the Fan into Flame mission offering, and have supported several missionaries through the Together in Mission program. Just before I returned from sabbatical, Pastor Meier preached at our Services and conducted the Sunday morning Bible Class, reminding us once more that starting new mission congregations is the most effective way of spreading God s word. As part of the Ablaze mission emphasis, our Synod has adopted the goal of planting 2000 new ministries in the United States by 2017 (the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation), with 50 of these to be in the Minnesota South District. Ablaze Covenant Congregations commit to starting up to four new ministries in this time period. These would most likely be targeted at various ethnic groups in our midst, and would have a different look and feel than the traditional congregations we have started in the past. If we decide to accept this challenge, some of our leaders would attend training sessions for this kind of outreach. There would be money available from the Fan into Flame mission offering, but there would likely be some expense on our part as well. Are we ready to be an Ablaze Covenant Congregation? That is the question that will likely come before us at the Annual Meeting in January. It does seem to be consistent with the Biblical mandate to make disciples and seems to be in line with our own heritage. However, we can legitimately ask whether this is right for us at this time. Please be thinking and praying about that. Church Office Hours: M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm Phone: Fax: redeemer@charterinternet.com Website: Blessed to Able to Serve Pastor, James W. OBED JAKE JACOBSON Obed Jake Jacobson was born in Spring Valley, Minnesota, on June 7, 1934, and was made a child of God through the Sacrament of Baptism on July 29, Jake was raised by his loving parents, Rueben and Vera (Johnson) Jacobson. He married Marlene Multhaup on June 23, 1957, and their marriage was blessed with three children, Brenda, Cheri and Terri. Jake enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After discharge, he was employed by IBM where he worked for 32 years. Jake served Redeemer as a church elder, church council member, and a Stephen Minister. After an 11 month battle with lymphoma, Jake went to his Savior on November 1, 2009, where he now joyfully waits for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. The funeral in his memory was held at Redeemer on November 4, Please remember Marlene and her family in your prayers, as they look forward in faith to the day when all who are in Christ will be reunited again. HAZEL COGSWELL Hazel Cogswell was born January 2, 1925, in Becker, Minnesota, to Ludwig and Florence Bolstad. She later moved to Rochester, where she met Adrian Cogswell. They married on May 28, 1948, and their marriage was blessed with five children: Iris, Joe, Jesse, Frank, and Patricia. Adrian passed away in After several years at Golden Living East, Hazel received the crown of life on November 3, 2009, and services in her memory were held on November 5. HAVE YOU SEEN THE BOXES MARKED CANTEEN IN THE NARTHEX? Those items that are being collected are being sent to the men and women in the picture on the left. Cody Luehmann is a soldier and an esteemed member of Our Savior's, in Eyota. This is his THIRD tour of duty. Pastor Vollrath of Our Savior s received an from Cody's dad, Kevin, asking for supplies. The PX was short of basic supplies for soldiers coming back to base. To show our support for these brave men and women, we sought to secure these basic necessities as quickly as possible. They deserve every necessity, if not luxury, as they put their lives on the line for our freedoms. Thank you so much! Redeemer's gifts and supplies are en route! Page 6

The Mission 2012 committee has been busy putting in place people, plans and information to help Redeemer congregation meet our goal of having all members actively participating in Redeemer s mission to live out, lift up and share our faith in Jesus Christ-welcoming all into our family of believers, by January Data has been gathered from surveys done on members interests and talents, as well as current participation in established programs like officers, committees, music, Bible study groups, youth and other organizations, etc.. This information will help to determine if we have the right activities available, and are there others we should add. In last month s Resource, an article described the Mission 2012 Connection Plan. This effort will result in many members becoming connectors links to help fellow members know that they are not alone, and that through these connection people, they have a link to find groups in which they may feel comfortable joining, activities that may meet their needs, opportunities they may want to be a part of leading, and people that share common experiences with them. Redeemer is a very warm and welcoming congregation. Visitors have told us that they found members to be very friendly, open and caring. Members have shared that there is a genuine interest in other members, and guests. There is a an air of harmony, with little squabbling or petty talk. Our staff is always ready to listen without judging. My family and I started attending services at Redeemer when we first moved to Rochester in 2003 and didn t know anyone. We shopped other churches and found things about Redeemer that really stood out in terms of welcoming. Dick and Marge Rengstorf greeted us every week, saying hello and chatting about martens. Tom and Anita Werle sponsored our membership and welcomed us and our children in the nursery. Countless others gave us a smile rather than a scowling frown when our kids were a bit restless during the service. A simple smile and greeting can mean so much. Keep that in mind as we enter a season where there may be many unfamiliar faces in a service we attend. I encourage each of you to set a goal to reach out and get to know another member or a visitor by the end of the year. What a wonderful opportunity to grow as Christians by simply sharing our faith in the love of Christ. We got it! Dan and Terri Zemke are selling 500 pounds of it to raise money for the Redeemer Youth. Meat will be sold in 20 pound lots of hamburger, steaks and roasts at all services on Sunday, December 13, in the narthex. Hamburger packages will be in one pound packages, steaks 2 per package and 2-3 pound roasts. Roasts will be $2.50 a pound and steaks $4.50 a pound. The meat will be frozen and ready to take home with you. The beef is grain fed with no hormones, antibiotics or implants. The hamburger is at least 90% lean. You get to enjoy a great steak and know that it helped Redeemer's Youth! If you have any questions, please contact Dan Zemke at BEEF Daryl Schulz Mission 2012 Committee Page 7

Note this is the survey that worshipers will be invited to fill out on November 28/29. If you cannot be with us that weekend, feel free to return this form at your earliest convenience. Our Elders and staff seek to make our Worship Services as meaningful as they can be both for our members and for visitors. Please give us your suggestions, keeping in mind that this not a vote but an informal survey that will assist our planning. Style of Service and Music We generally follow the services from the hymnal with variations according to the season. On occasion we use services that are completely unique to the day. We use a mixture of hymns from the hymnal, praise songs from the purple supplement, and at the late service on the second Sunday more contemporary Christian music. Some congregations use only music from the hymnal, others have a contemporary service every Sunday, while still others blend new and old in all their services. What is meaningful for you? Helpful Suggestions Following the Service For several years we have printed the service in the bulletin that members and visitors might be able to follow along with minimal confusion. Some congregations print just an outline in the bulletin referring to page numbers in the hymnal. Still others project the entire service upon a screen at the front. What is helpful for you? Additional Suggestions Service Accompaniment The organ is our chief instrument for leading worship. On special occasions we augment the organ with other instruments. Sometimes we use the piano. At our celebration services, we use guitars and drums in addition to the keyboard What is meaningful for you? Helpful Suggestions Page 8

Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated every 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th weekend, and also at special services. We have the practice of using individual cups. While the older practice was to have communion only once a month, some congregations now celebrate it weekly. Some offer the common cup in addition to individual cups. Some allow those as young as fifth grade to commune after a suitable period of instruction. What is meaningful for you? Helpful Suggestions Sermons We try to balance Law and Gospel in sermons that proclaim God s word in a way that is understandable and meaningful to those in the world today. The sermon needs to be clearly heard and understood, neither too simple for the mature nor over the head of a non-believer. Sometimes we use the pulpit and sometimes not. Sometimes we use projection and at other times bulletin outlines. While we usually base the message on one of the appointed lessons we sometimes have a multi-week series. What is meaningful for you? Helpful Suggestions Children s Messages We have a special children s time in virtually every service. We want to be able to let the children know that they are important, while also sharing a Gospel message on their level. While many adults also enjoy the children s message, we want to remember that children are our prime focus in this part of the service. What is meaningful for you? Helpful Suggestions Elders, Ushers, Greeters, Altar Guild, Nursery, Parking, Temperature, Lighting, Directions, etc. Many things have to happen to make each service happen. We are thankful for all who assist. What is helpful for you? Additional Suggestions Page 9

TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors gives your body a wide range of valuable nutrients, including fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Some examples are: green spinach, orange sweet potatoes, black beans, yellow corn, purple plums, blueberries, red watermelon, and white onions. Have them with meals or for a snack. Leave skins on your fruits and vegetables, if possible. For example, eat the skin when you have a baked potato, and snack on unpeeled apples, pears, and peaches. Don t forget to rinse fruits and vegetables before eating. Eat a diet rich in foods that contain fiber such as dry beans, fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain foods. Breakfast is a good time to enjoy foods with fiber. For example, try unsweetened, whole wheat or bran cereals, and add fruit such as berries and bananas. Season your foods with lemon juice, herbs, or spices, instead of butter and salt. Look for foods that are low in cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat (mostly in foods that come from animals) and trans fats (found in many cakes, cookies, crackers, icings, margarines, and microwave popcorn). Saturated fats and trans fats can increase blood cholesterol levels. Choose and prepare foods with little salt. Choose lean cuts of meat and poultry. Trim away extra fat and remove the skin from chicken and turkey before cooking. Broil, roast, bake, steam, microwave, or boil foods instead of frying. Hold the special sauces. Choose low-fat or fat-free salad dressing. Watch your portion size. Controlling portion size helps when eating foods that are high in calories. Drink plenty of liquids such as water and other drinks without added sugar, fat-free or low-fat milk, 100% juice, coffee, and teas. Those who choose to drink alcoholic beverages should do so sensibly and in moderation (1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks per day for men). To maintain a healthy weight, balance the calories you take in from foods and beverages during the course of your day with the calories you burn during normal bodily functions and physical exercise. Beware of diets that make big promises about losing weight, regaining youth, or achieving high energy. If it sounds too quick, too easy, or too good to be true, it probably is. Check with your doctor or a registered dietician about taking a dietary supplement. Together you can review your diet, prescription medicines, and health needs, and decide whether a supplement is right for you. (nih.gov/healthinformation) Page 13

Jesus said, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 RECEPTIVITY TO CARE Most people are much more open to giving care than to receiving it. When a person is giving care, he or she is in a position of strength, stability, and authority. When a person is receiving care, he or she is acknowledging weakness, insecurity, and vulnerability. As a result, there are countless people today who, though they really could benefit from a Christian friend who would listen and care for them, instead tough it out on their own. They remain the strong silent type, or wear a smile across the face that is holding back a flood of tears. Society encourages this (particularly for men). To ask for help is to admit weakness. To show weakness is to admit inferiority. But God did not create us to be independent. We were created to be interdependent. God s Word is clear on this all the way back to Genesis: It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him (Genesis 2:18). The New Testament underscores this theme with more than 50 verses that contain the words one another. These verses include admonitions such as love one another, build up one another, and pray for one another. What these verses don t say is that only we are to love, encourage, build up, and pray for other people. The one another wording gives them a reciprocal meaning. It also tells us that we are to allow other people to love, encourage, build up and pray for us! It is most difficult for people to ask for help. Whether it is because of guilt, shame, inadequacy, or fear of rejection, many would much prefer to suffer alone than ask for help. But suffering alone is not God s intent for us. Jesus promises, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). We can receive this promised rest when we turn to one another for comfort and help. Our Stephen Ministers at Redeemer know all about receiving care. Many of them have been on the receiving end of care at an earlier point in their lives something that has motivated them to give care now. They know how difficult it is to ask for help, but they also know the great personal and spiritual growth and healing that follows. They know how to respond in a loving, caring, and nonjudgmental manner. They are equipped, ready, and waiting to provide the comfort and care God very much desires you to have. If you find yourself now or in the future facing difficulties in life, don t succumb to society s norm of remaining strong and suffering alone. Take the courageous step of seeking help. Open your heart to receiving God s love and grace through another person. Our Stephen Ministry at Redeemer offers the opportunity of a very confidential relationship with someone who will listen to you and provide you with the care and the encouragement you need, while Christ works inside to bring rest to your weary, burdened heart. Please contact the church office at if you or someone you know could use the caring presence of a Stephen Minister in their life. Page 14 Page 13

OLD BUSINESS: Budgeting for 2010 was mentioned. Scott Okuno will have last year's budget put in each group's mailbox. They are asked when planning their 2010 budget to try and reduce expenses by 3-5%. Pastor Heining mentioned Redeemer has been requested to be an Ablaze Covenant congregation. The question is whether Redeemer can take on the task of opening new churches in the area and/or other potential mission work between now and This will be brought to the congregation at the annual meeting (January 17, 2010 at 12:45 pm). NEW BUSINESS: Date for annual meeting was set for Sunday January 17, at 12:45 PM. The RLCW will coordinate with the youth leadership ROCK to serve lunch between the late service and the meeting. Projector and flat screen project for the church and chapel. The Memorial and Special Gifts committee had reviewed the project brought earlier in the year by Michael Harvey. The cost of the project is quite sizable and the Memorial committee was looking for direction as to who should spearhead the fund-raising. Patti asked Michael for an estimate of the actual price and it will be added in the next update of the Memorial and Special Gifts booklet for awareness of the project. A fundraising campaign can officially start at a later date. Officer, Board and Cabinet Reports President's report (Scott Okuno): Staff evaluations complete. The next issue will be budgeting. Treasurer's report (Tom Burton): Net cash change year-todate is $25, Human Concerns (Bob Vehrenkamp and Phyllis Pinnow): Channel One barrel was emptied recently. There are additional sign-ups for Thanksgiving, and another pick-up after Thanksgiving. RLCW (Sandy Weiden): The Christmas Dinner and Social will be December 3. RLCW was asked to help with the Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ in June. They gifted $100 to help with the Habitat for Humanity pledge. The Bakeless Bake sale profited $ Mites giving was $300. Board of Stewardship (Kristie Klatt): Fall Campaign for Growing In Faith... Rooted in Christ is being worked on. A sign and banner have been completed. Currently, they are stuffing letters with 'time and talent' information. Board of Trustees (Dan Hildestad): Heat tapes for the roof are being purchased. The outside railing will be fixed. Fall clean-up is complete. The second rotten tree was removed; both trees will be replaced in spring. Phyllis will discuss new trees with Whiting's Nursery. The coffee machine upstairs in the narthex will be moved to the north fellowship hall (plumbing was put in place during the renovation). Security issues what do we need? Youth Ministry (Bryce Beckman): On-going planning and fundraising is taking place for Bethesda, Chicago Mission Trip and the National Youth Gathering. Fundraisers include: Pizza Ranch, wreaths, December 12 Parent's Night Out, and Zemke's meat donation. Plan on going skiing in January. They may post a thermometer outlining fund raising progress. It was suggested they could charge a small fee for wreath return and disposal after Christmas. STAFF REPORTS: DPM Report (April Beckman): Preparing for Christmas, young instrumental players, and small ladies choir group. Board of Education (George Poch): A suggestion was made to make Sunday School donations tax deductible. They are currently added together, without receiving individual credit for their contribution. It was decided it would be a lot of work to keep track of the individual donations as it would require an additional helper. Board of Elders (Larry Stoen): Reviewed the Connection Ministry framework. Board of Family Life (Michael Harvey): The next event will be a parent's night out in December. DCE Report (Michael Harvey): Connection Ministry is this Sunday. Bright Night Sharing was Sunday. Creation Conference was Sunday evening. Pastor's Report (Pastor Jim): Sabbatical was invigorating. He will be asking the congregation for feedback on different ways we can worship here at Redeemer. Nominations for synod president can be made at the Annual Meeting. Page 15

LADIES ARE YOU READY FOR CHRISTMAS? Spiritually, that is! The Tuesday morning Ladies Bible Study is starting an Advent Study on December 1, at 9 am, in the North Fellowship Hall. Even if you cannot commit to a long-term study, join us for a few weeks. RLCW CHRISTMAS SOCIAL Reminder to join us at the RLCW Christmas Social and Dinner on Thursday, December 3, at 6 pm. There will be a silent auction, quilt raffle, and white elephant sale. Entertainment by the Teapot Singers. The menu will be cranberry glazed chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, rolls, and gingerbread cake. SECRET SISTERS All of the ladies of Redeemer are invited to participate in this ministry of caring and sharing with other sisters in Christ. This is how it works: You will each be given a sister that you will need to pray for and encourage. It is wonderful to have someone that prays for you daily and is there to send you an encouraging note from time to time. We ll be keeping our sisters a secret; because half the fun is trying to guess who it is as the year progresses. At the end of 2010, we will reveal our sisters at the RLCW Christmas Social. If you are interested in being part of this wonderful program or would like more information, please talk to Sandy Weiden ( ). Participation sheets are available on the long counter in the narthex. THE SHARING TREE The Sharing Tree is now up in the Narthex. If you would like to support this cause, please pick a tag from the tree and purchase the gift indicated. Please return that gift to Redeemer and box under the tree unwrapped. If you have any questions, please contact Janette Luehmann. Up until December 1, we are collecting items for Little Earth. Little Earth is the Native American complex in Minneapolis. For more information on Little Earth please contact Pastor Rich at Richard_Latterner@yahoo.com. After December 1, we will again be collecting items for the Women s Shelter, Bear Creek Services, and St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. Page 16

We meet at 4:00 pm for an hour every Sunday except extra rehearsals, if needed. We will need singers and speakers/actors. No need to sign up, but please be at the first rehearsal or give Lynora a call if interested in participating in the service. We also plan on decorating cookies for those in the service - 5:00 p.m. SHOUT SNACK VOLUNTEERS December Johnsons January Wards SHOUT! Shout! will be on Sunday. December 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. This should be a fun evening. We may even play Smogin, who knows???. All youth in grades 6-12 are invited. Come on Sunday night and bring a friend. It should be a great evening.

NATIONAL YOUTH GATHERING We have 23 youth and 4 adults heading for New Orleans in July. The group met on Sunday and found out who was rooming with whom and, also, who was their family group leader. The adults who will be going to New Orleans with the youth are - Michael Harvey, April Beckman, Paul Lewis, and Lynora Miller. The Youth have paid the registration fee, but there is a lot of other items that we need to pay for, such as the bus trip, hotel rooms, etc. Please help support the youth in whatever you can, prayers, monetary support, etc. All is very much appreciated. PIZZA RANCH STEWARTVILLE On Tuesday, December 1, Redeemer Youth will be helping out at the Pizza Ranch in Stewartville. We will be getting some of the profits and the tips for doing this. We did this last year and it is a great fund raiser. We need youth to sign up to help. We plan on doing this in three shifts. Transportation will be provided, if necessary. There is a sign up sheet on our bulletin board. Please indicate what times you can work and if you need transportation. Something new this year; each worker is being asked to pay $4.00 for their meal, which is only fair (or we eat up all the profits!). Also, be sure to spread the word to all your friends and family. The more that come to eat, the more we get. If you plan on going to any of the events this summer (Chicago, Youth Gathering, Bethesda) you need to do your part. Sign up today! Advent Supper The Youth will be serving the Advent Supper on Wednesday, December 9. Please keep that date open to help serve and clean up after. Thanks to the Fiecks, we will be serving pizza again. Postcards will be mailed out asking for donations of lettuce, dressing, bars, milk, etc. If you cannot bring what you are asked to, please call Lynora at and let her know to ensure that we have enough. The Youth will also be doing gift wrapping for anyone who is interested. If you like to gift wrap (and are good at it, let us know). If you have any paper or ribbon you want to donate, please let one of the youth know. Fundraisers We are still selling cutlery by Rada You will be able to order individual knives, gift sets, etc. Also, available will be recipe books, candles, etc. Many of the youth have a catalog to show you what they have. We also have a couple samples that will be displayed on Sunday mornings If interested, the youth do have prices also. I can accept orders until December 8 and you can still have them for Christmas. Babysitters Needed Youth - we need your help on Saturday, December 12. This is Parents Night Out. Parents will be bringing their children to church so they can have a night out (see a movie, go out for dinner, buy Christmas presents, etc.). The parents will be bringing supper for their children. Please let Lynora know if you are able to help that night. We will be doing this from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Helpers need to be there by 4:00; parents to bring their children at 4:30. You will need to bring your own supper also. Profits from this will go to the Youth. Y.E.S. (Youth-Enlightened-Encouraged-Enthusiastically Led by the Spirit) On Sunday, November 15, the theme for Y.E.S. was The Domino Effect based on John 6:1-13. Julie expanded on how one person can make a difference, sharing what we have. Jesus was able to feed thousands. This was to tie into Thanksgiving, Bethesda, Cookies for troops, etc. They also made decorations for the Christmas tree. A domino tile was given to each youth with the Bible verse and the words Be A Domino. DON T MISS OUT! Check out these upcoming events!
