CHRISTIAN INITIATION For school age children, teens or adults follows the RCIA process, also called the Catechumenate, for those thinking and joining the Roman Catholic Church by celebrating Baptism, Confirmation and/or first Eucharist: inquiries may be made by calling the Religious Education Office. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK Call the Rectory to arrange for a minister to bring the Eucharist to someone homebound or in the hospital. In cases with those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, please contact one of the priests to celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE Engaged couples call the Rectory for an appointment with one of the priests or deacons at least six months in advance of the sacramental celebration. Holy Name Book Club Holy Name Book Club will be meeting in the Rectory on Tuesday, Oct. 17th at 7:00 pm. This month s book will be Alice McDermott's "Someone. All are welcome. Hope to see you there! 3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY Congratulations to long-time, prominent Holy Name of Jesus Parishioners James O Dea and Coach Donald Kent who were honored at last Saturday s 36 th Annual Great Irish Fair in Coney Island. Jim was named the Fair s Chief Brehon while Coach Kent received the Celtic Cross Award. This was welldeserved recognition to two men who have given much in terms of time, treasure and talent to their parish and their Diocese for many, many years. Congratulations again to them and many thanks to the Fair s organizers and key volunteers (including Holy Name s own Martin Cottingham, Gerald Keogh, and Ann Dolan) who work so hard to make this such a successful event in support of Catholic Education in the Brooklyn Diocese. Congratulations and best wishes to Antonella Tropea and Joseph Barbieri who were married in a beautiful Nuptial Mass in HN Church last Saturday afternoon. Congratulations also to their families and many thanks to the volunteers who worked hard to clean and prepare the Church for the wedding. Sunday, September 17 th, was Catechetical Sunday. At the 10:30 Family Mass we gave a special blessing to our Catechists: Maria Camastro, Carol Cox, Kate Geyer, Denia Larios, Katie McAllister, Martha McNulty and Martha Velazquez. Under the leadership of our Coordinator of Religious Education Kathryn Sisto, these volunteer catechists teach our Religious Education classes to elementary school age children in our parish who attend public or non-catholic private schools. We also gave a special blessing to the parents and other family members who, as these children s primary Catechists, play key roles in ensuring that the lessons taught in our RE classes are reinforced at home. If you know of any children in our parish who should be attending RE classes but are not, please encourage their parents to get in touch with Mrs. Sisto right away. The Diocesan and Parish Pastoral Years are now moving into full gear. Our ARISE Together in Christ small groups will begin meeting in early October. Many thanks to our ARISE Leadership Team for giving witness about the benefits and graces of the ARISE experience and for manning the sign-up desks in the vestibule of the Church during the past two Sign-Up weekends. Elsewhere in this bulletin you will see information about the upcoming resumption of the parish RCIA program, Book Club, and Monday Night Bible Study. You will also see information about our October 1 st (Respect Life Sunday) Holy Hour and two upcoming Vocation Events (including Evening Vespers at St. James with Bishop DiMarzio). Clearly there is a lot happening, so I ll keep the reflection of this Sunday s Gospel brief. One great homilist suggests that the parable about the landowner and the laborers is Sunday s Gospel is not about wages at all. Rather, it is about God. We should know Him by now, this God of ours. Didn t Jesus tell us enough about Him, about what He was like in His dealing with sinners. This God of ours is rich in forgiving. I said we should know Him by now. I think that deep in our hearts we do. We often say to one another, don t we, that we d prefer to be judged by Him than by people? We say that, because we feel that He s the only one with the full picture and that He s the one with the biggest heart. They say our finite minds cannot cope with infinity. In this instance, I believe they can. We can find nothing finite in God s generosity. And the landowner in today s parable would suggest to us that we are right. (These Might Help, Bishop Joseph Cassidy, Veritas Publications, 2000, pp ) HOLY HOUR FOR LIFE Sunday, October 1 st, 2017 is Respect Life Sunday. There will be a Holy Hour for Life in Holy Name Church at 3:00PM that day. The Holy Hour will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Liturgy for Life, a few minutes of silent prayer for the protection of all human life from conception to natural death, and Benediction. THE JEREMIAH PROJECT is having its first overnight gathering from 5:30PM, Friday, October 6 th to 1:00PM on Saturday, October 7 th, 2017 at the Cathedral Seminary House of Formation, 7200 Douglaston Parkway, Douglaston, NY The Jeremiah Project overnight gatherings are for high school boys with some interest in learning more about seminary life and the priesthood.
