3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY 1- I begin this week s note by writing about two very current and important subject-areas in which the Catholic Church hierarchy is making its voice heard in the public policy arena. The first area involves the issue of Religious Freedom. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has designated the period from June 22, the Feast of English Martyrs Sts. Thomas Moore and John Fisher, to June 29th, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, as the Annual Religious Freedom Week. The theme this year is Serving Others in God s Love. During this week in a special way Catholics are encouraged to pray and take action in support of religious liberty at home and abroad. More information can be found at and The second important subject area is the wide-spread concern over the increasingly large number of children who are being separated from their parents as part of immigration enforcement actions at our Southwest Border. USCCB President Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, USCCB Migration Committee Chairman Bishop Joe Vasquez, and many other U.S. Catholic Bishops (including Brooklyn s Bishop DiMarzio) have issued statements sharply critical of separating children from parents. In a June 19th interview with Reuters News Agency, Pope Francis made clear that he supported the American Catholic Bishops condemnation of children/parent separations as against Catholic values. Two fundamental principles of Catholic Social Teaching on Immigration are (1) that a nation has a right to regulate its borders and to control immigration; but that (2) a country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy. A detailed examination of the tremendous complexities of regulating our borders with justice and mercy is far beyond the scope of this brief note, but the following quote from Fr. Patrick Keating, a lawyer and the Chief Executive Officer of the Brooklyn Diocese s Catholic Migration Office provides very important guidance: It is inhumane to rip children from their parents arms; to punish children, just to deter immigration.there has to be a more just way of dealing with the current immigration crisis. Surely all people of good will can agree that separating innocent children from their parents is not the answer. We pray that our public officials can quickly agree upon a more just way for border enforcement so that this parent/child separation practice can quickly end before it causes more trauma to the families involved and more damage to our great Nation s standing as a moral leader among the nations of the world. 3 - Friday evening June 15th was filled with several happy events. At 4 PM the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2018 from our aligned St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy was held in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. We re proud to list the names of the graduates in a congratulatory flyer elsewhere in this bulletin; and we again congratulate and thank all their teachers; academy principal, staff and directors; and most especially their parents, grandparents and other involved family members for all the years of love and support they have given to these fine graduates. At 6:15 PM a bus departed from in front of Holy Name Church taking a group of parishioners and their friends to the New York Philharmonic Orchestra s Concert in Prospect Park. If was a great concert on a beautiful late spring evening and we thank our new Resident Priest Fr. Patrick Burns for all he did to make this such a success. At 9:00 PM (after dark) Cub Scout Pack 237 had its annual Camp Fire and Cub-O-Rama event in Mary s Field. Many of the young Scouts received awards (including the Catholic Parvuli Dei Award) and advances in rank in the presence of deservedlyproud parents and other loved ones. Many thanks to Cub Master Anthony Caccamo and the other Pack 237 adult leaders for their hundreds of volunteer hours throughout the year. 4 - On Sunday morning, June 17th (between the 10:30 and Noon Masses!) I was able to be present in Prospect Park for the very exciting 9th inning of the game when the Holy Name Rangers pulled ahead and won their fourth consecutive Championship in the Prospect Park high school age Boys Baseball League. See the more complete Congratulations item elsewhere in this bulletin. 5 At all of last weekend s Masses I announced that I would be attending a Diocesan-sponsored Intensive Spanish Language Course in Costa Rica for the month of July. Fr. Patrick Burns will be acting for me while I m away, ably assisted by Fr. Austin and Monsignor Curran. Please consider the following commentary on this Sunday s Readings (Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66, 80): As we celebrate the birthday of John the Baptist, the readings focus on John s role of inspiring people to prepare for the coming of the Messiah. The First Reading is one of four Servant Songs in the book of the prophet Isaiah. For Christians, these songs expressly prepare the way for the Messiah by foreshadowing the coming of Jesus, who fulfilled these prophecies. Here the Servant speaks and describes his call from his mother s womb; how God empowered him with gifts as a speaker; how difficult his task was going to be; how his task was to bring together the people of Israel while also being a light of salvation to the nations of the earth. The servant trusts in God while grieving over the sufferings that he has to face. The Gospel reading from Luke narrates events surrounding John s birth focusing on his name. For the people of Israel, a person s name expressed an aspect of their identity. The name, John, a common one among the people of Israel, was found in his family s lineage. It means the Lord has been gracious because the elderly parents, Elizabeth and Zechariah, had lost all hope of conceiving a child in their old age. God had certainly favored them. This raised the question: What, then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

4 The Second Reading, from Acts of the Apostles, answers this question. When Paul speaks in the synagogue of Antioch, he identifies John s role as preparing the way for the Messiah. This shows how well the early Church understood that the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ. Like John the Baptist, our task is to continue his work of enabling the light of Christ to shine out more fully in our world.
