3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY This week has been very busy with practices and preparations for this coming Sunday s Confirmation at our 12 Noon Mass. There are four items to report about: 1 - Many thanks to Nick Sisto and Alayne Cox for speaking at this past weekend s Masses about discerning if God is calling you to serve this parish as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Lector, or Hospitality Minister. As I mentioned in my remarks after their presentations, these are very important lay ministries that are not that time consuming. The parish could really use some additional help in these areas. The deadline for enrolling for the final Diocesan training session of this year is coming up soon. Please consult the Are You Being Called flyer in the vestibule for Nick s and Alayne s contact information or contact me at Rectory if you have any questions. 2 On Tuesday evening of this week Bishop DiMarzio chaired a Catholic Education Summit at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston that was attended by about 700 pastors, priests, religious, parish elementary school and academy board members, principals, faculty, and staff, and other interested lay persons. We heard presentations by the Bishop and top managers in the Diocesan Office of the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. Challenges and successes were presented quite clearly. There are many, many good and exciting things going on in the Catholic elementary schools and academies in the Brooklyn Diocese. We are blessed to have St. Joseph the Workers Academy ( Strengthening Faith, Enlightening Minds, Transforming Hearts One Student at a Time ) located right here in the former Holy Name Elementary School. If you are a family considering the possibility of Catholic school for your child (or if you know of such a family), please consult the SJWCA brochure available in the vestibule of the Church and contact the Academy for further information, including information about financial aid. 3 October is Respect Life Month. On next Thursday (October 27th), immediately after the 9 AM Mass, we will begin our regularly-scheduled Eucharistic Adoration with recitation of the First Joyful Mystery of the Rosary (the Annunciation), and the Litany for Life. Following Recitation of those Prayers for Life, silent Adoration will resume as usual until Benediction and Reposition at 11:45 AM. Please join us if you can. 4 Please continue to pray for the success of the ARISE Together in Christ program currently underway in our parish. Jeremiah Project This program is for high school boys who show some interest in a vocation to the priesthood and/or college seminary. The program invites students to participate in a monthly overnight experience and share in the fraternity of our college seminarians at the Cathedral Seminary. The first overnight is on November 4th and 5th starting at 5:30 P.M. Friday to 1:00 P.M. Saturday. This discernment group will continue on each of the first weekends of the month til May except for the months of December and January.
