CHRISTIAN INITIATION For school age children, teens or adults follows the RCIA process, also called the Catechumenate, for those thinking and joining the Roman Catholic Church by celebrating Baptism, Confirmation and/or first Eucharist: inquiries may be made by calling the Religious Education Office. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK Call the Rectory to arrange for a minister to bring the Eucharist to someone homebound or in the hospital. In cases with those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, please contact one of the priests to celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE Engaged couples call the Rectory for an appointment with one of the priests or deacons at least six months in advance of the sacramental celebration. Mtg., Rectory Base. Holy Name Society, School Mtg. Rm. ARISE Together in Christ is an international, diocesansponsored, parish-centered endeavor to renew and strengthen our faith. Following our successful Fall 2016 season in which over 80 people participated, our second season will resume for six weekly sessions during Lent, beginning the last week of February. Groups of 5-10 people will meet at mutually convenient times, to share personal faith experiences in encountering Christ in biblical readings and today. Open to all, including non-parishioners, we will read and discuss: Jesus telling us how to fast and make donations; the Transfiguration of the Lord; Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well; Nicodemus asking Jesus how we can be born again; learn from an Old Testament prophet about the new covenant; Jesus accepting death on the cross. The Beginning Experience The loss of a spouse through death, divorce or separation is one of life s most traumatic experiences; often resulting in feelings of loneliness and grief. When those feelings remain, it can be overwhelming and hard to move forward. The Beginning Experience weekend is a grace filled time to focus on you to feel understood by peers and experience a sense of peace and a renewed hope for the future. 3 A Note from Fr. Larry It was a pleasure to install six new altar servers at last Sunday s 10:30 Mass. Congratulations to Anthony and Bianca Barrigan, David Gil, Francisco Ortiz, Jr., Damian Ramirez, and James Robertson. Many thanks to them for volunteering for this important ministry and for completing the required training. Many thanks also to their families. And of course very special thanks to Maria Camastro and her hard-working assistant instructor Lauren Caccamo for all the time they devoted to the training process. Also at our 10:30 Mass last Sunday, as part of this week s observance of the 102nd anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America, were leaders and Boy Scouts from Holy Name s Troop 237. It was a great opportunity to recognize the troop s adult leaders for all the time they devote to enabling neighborhood youth to participate in Scouting. At last weekend s Masses we distributed copies of our updated List of Parish Ministries and Organizations, which soon will also be added to our parish website. February 26th is Lay Ministry Sunday. The adults and young people involved in altar serving and the Boy Scouts are excellent examples of the many ways there are to serve and to participate in the vibrant spiritual, liturgical and social life of HNJ parish. Copies of the updated list of ministries and organizations will be available in the Church throughout February. Please take a copy home and thoughtfully and prayerfully consider if there is some way God may be calling you to become more involved. In this upcoming Sunday s Gospel Jesus challenges us to look more deeply inside ourselves to try to root out sins of the heart like anger. That challenge is particularly timely today when there is so much anger and angry talk at all levels of our society, right down to within our own neighborhoods and at times within our own families. Consider the following brief commentary: In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus takes the Ten Commandments to a deeper level. Instead of focusing merely on external actions, like murder and adultery, Jesus wants us to examine what is in our hearts, like anger or lust. These internal dispositions are the root cause of our outward sins. Jesus is teaching us to take responsibility for our attitudes as well as our actions. Some may say that we cannot control our internal thoughts and feelings, or that it s unrealistic to eliminate anger and lust from our inner selves. But Jesus would not command the impossible. So it must be possible to purify our hearts and control our thoughts. But we don t have to do this on our own power. Jesus expects great things of us, but he doesn t expect us to do them alone! Through the presence of his Spirit in our hearts, we have divine assistance to accomplish this task. (Connect!, Liturgical Publications Inc., February 16, 2014, p. 4.) LAY MINISTRY CONFERENCE As part of the diocesan recognition of Lay Ministry Sunday the Pastoral Institute is offering a special opportunity to gather on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St. Andrew Avellino Parish, th Street (Northern Blvd. between 157 and 158 Street) in Flushing beginning from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Valerie Torres, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor at Fordham University, will speak on ministering to the family in light of Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis Apostolic Letter. Bishop Paul Sanchez will celebrate Solemn Evening Vespers and lunch will be provided.
