April 2018 is the final month of the five-year Fulfilling the Vision Campaign begun in 2013 to raise funds for the beautiful restoration of Holy Name of Jesus Church. Invoices for remaining monthly, quarterly or annual pledge payments have been sent out this month. Please make your final payments as soon as possible so we can determine exactly where we stand in our progress towards repaying the stilllarge remaining debt on the restoration. As always, thank you for your generosity. World Day of Prayer for Vocations World Day of Prayer will be observed on Sunday, April 22nd, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. The purpose of this day is to publically fulfill the Lord s instruction to, Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord s call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. You can find many resources to promote a culture of vocations on the USCCB Vocations webpage SACRAMENTS TO THE HOMEBOUND The Easter season is a very good time to bring the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the homebound. If you have a homebound relative, neighbor, or friend in the parish who you think might wish to receive Communion at home, please let that person know that we are very interested in bringing Communion to them (and also making the Sacraments of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick available to them at home if they wish). All it takes to begin the process is a request through the parish office. Please assure those interested that all visits would be at definite times and days arranged in advance.

LARRY Elsewhere in this bulletin you will see the items entitled Remaining Pledge Payments for the Church Restoration Campaign and about April 22, 2018 being the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In the Brooklyn Diocese we are still in the middle of the Diocesan Year of Vocations. It is very appropriate therefore that we (and especially our young people) give careful consideration to the Catholic News Service s following summary of Pope Francis message concerning the 2018 World Day of Prayer for Vocations: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Men and women contemplating a vocation to the priesthood, consecrated life or marriage should not be afraid because God wants only for them to experience the joy that comes from serving others, Pope Francis said. "Our slowness and our sloth" should not delay a response and Christians need not be "fearful of our limitations and sins, but instead open our hearts to the voice of the Lord," the pope said in his message for the 2018 World Day of Prayer for Vocations. "It will not fill our hearts if we keep standing by the window with the excuse of waiting for the right time, without accepting this very day the risk of making a decision," the pope wrote. "Vocation is today! The Christian mission is now!" The papal message for the day of prayer, which will be observed April 22, was released Dec. 4 at the Vatican. The 2018 theme is "Listening, discerning and living the Lord's call." In his message, Pope Francis said God's call "is not as clearcut as any of those things we can hear, see or touch in our daily experiences" because God "comes silently and discreetly, without imposing on our freedom." Christians, he said, must learn to listen carefully and "view things with the eyes of faith" in order to listen to his voice which is "drowned out by the many worries and concerns that fill our minds and hearts." "We will never discover the special, personal calling that God has in mind for us if we remain enclosed in ourselves, in our usual way of doing things, in the apathy of those who fritter away their lives in their own little world," the pope said. Listening is increasingly difficult in today's society, which is "overstimulated and bombarded by information" and "prevents us from pausing and enjoying the taste of contemplation" and discerning God's plan, he said. Often stifled by "the temptations of ideology and negativity," he said, Christians need spiritual discernment which allows them to "discover the places, the means and situations through which" God's calls them. "Every Christian ought to grow in the ability to 'read within' his or her life and to understand where and to what he or she is being called by the Lord, in order to carry on his mission," Pope Francis said. He also urged men and women to live out their calling once it is discovered and "become a witness of the Lord here and now," whether in marriage or priesthood or consecrated life. "If (God) lets us realize that he is calling us to consecrate ourselves totally to his kingdom, then we should have no fear!" Pope Francis said. "It is beautiful -- and a great grace," he said, "to be completely and forever consecrated to God and the service of our brothers and sisters." Scripture Insights Today s readings crackle with the Apostles excitement over the new understandings they were experiencing after the Resurrection and with their work of creating a new way of life, a community of the resurrected Christ living and life-giving. In the light of Resurrection, Jesus words in the Gospel, spoken before the Passion, take on new meaning. The First Reading is part of a lengthy story that began with Peter healing a crippled man near the Jerusalem Temple and then addressing the people who stood around him, amazed at what he had done. As the crowds continued to grow, Peter and John were arrested, and his accusers demanded to know by whose authority they did such a thing. Peter is answering that question in today s First Reading. His sense of urgency and conviction ring out as he testifies that there is not salvation through anyone else. He is, after all, filled with the Holy Spirit. Likewise, in the Second Reading we can hear a deep sense of community identity. Thanks to the loving gift of the Father, which is his Son, we have become children of God both now and in the future, when God (or Christ) is fully revealed and we become like him. In today s Gospel, John uses the image of the Good Shepherd to explain what it means to be a faith community. It is about our shared trust in Christ who put his life on the line to take care of his flock and keep them secure. It is about a flock that can be open and welcoming to others without fear for its safety, because the one who laid down his life for them has taken it up again as the Father commanded.
