CHRISTIAN INITIATION For school age children, teens or adults follows the RCIA process, also called the Catechumenate, for those thinking and joining the Roman Catholic Church by celebrating Baptism, Confirmation and/or first Eucharist: inquiries may be made by calling the Religious Education Office. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK Call the Rectory to arrange for a minister to bring the Eucharist to someone homebound or in the hospital. In cases with those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, please contact one of the priests to celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE Engaged couples call the Rectory for an appointment with one of the priests or deacons at least six months in advance of the sacramental celebration. Following our successful Fall 2016 season in which over 80 people participated, our second season will resume for six weekly sessions during Lent, beginning the last week of February. Groups of 5-10 people will meet at mutually convenient times, to share personal faith experiences in encountering Christ in biblical readings and today. Open to all, including non-parishioners, we will read and discuss: Jesus telling us how to fast and make donations; the Transfiguration of the Lord; Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well; Nicodemus asking Jesus how we can be born again; learn from an Old Testament prophet about the new covenant; Jesus accepting death on the cross. 3 A Note from Fr. Larry Many thanks to our Arise Together in Christ witnesses (Lillian Betancourt, Paul Baity, Cynthia Cruz, Marybeth Artz, Virginia Gorman, Bob Burke and Maria Mendez) who spoke so movingly at last weekend s Masses about their and their small groups experiences during Arise Season One. I was in and out of the Church a lot on Sunday morning because of the icy sleet, but I got to hear almost all of their excellent, thoughtful presentations. Please consider participating in Arise Season Two. We ll be having our second Sign-Up Sunday at this weekend s Masses. This week I had the pleasure of attending part of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy s Middle School (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade) Math Bee. I was not able to make the earlier Upper Level (6th, 7th, and 8th grade) Math Bee, but I learned that both Bees are conducted under similar, quite challenging rules (especially so for those of us who are no longer young!). The students are verbally given mental math problems (no writing, no repeating numbers (such as the times tables), no using fingers for counting purposes); and have only either 5 seconds (for the early rounds) or 10 seconds (for the later, more difficult, rounds) to verbally give their answer (with that first answer being their final answer ). If that answer is not correct, they are eliminated from the competition. It was all very interesting to watch, and was an opportunity to showcase the academic component of Catholic elementary education at its best. Emily Boyer won the Upper Level Bee and John Jack Tomasi won the Middle School Bee. Congratulations to them both and to their teachers, families, the other contestants and to all who helped prepare for and conduct these events. I want to devote the remainder of this note to updating you on following three important components of the broad range of services offered by Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens: 1 The Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens (CCBQ) Call Center: The CCBQ Call Center (Telephone Number ) is operational (taking calls) from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM from Monday through Friday. Staff members answering calls there can provide information and linkage to Catholic Charities Services in (among other things) the areas of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling and Treatment, Early Childhood and Family Stabilization (including WIC and Homelessness Prevention), Senior Services (including Meals on Wheels). 2 The Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens (CCBQ) Main Walk-In Center: is located on the 1st Floor of 191 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY and is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Those interested in receiving social services such as those described above in the areas of Mental Health, Family Stabilization, and Senior Services can simply walk-in (no appointment necessary; potential clients are seen in the order of their arrival) during the hours when they are open and meet with a staff member for needs assessment and linkage with services. 191 Joralemon Street can be reached by the A, C, F trains to Jay Street/Metrotech, the 2,3,4,5 trains to Borough Hall, or the R Train to Court Street. 3 The Diocese of Brooklyn s Catholic Migration Services downtown Brooklyn office: is located on the 4th Floor of 191 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201, telephone number It provides legal services in the areas of Immigration, Housing, and Immigrant Workers Rights (Immigrant Workers Rights has its own Labor Hotline Number of LABOR). Call the Migration Services office for an appointment, understanding that they are extremely busy at the present time.
