We recognize and give thanks for those who have consecrated their lives to God and the Church through vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Some join a religious congregation as sisters, brothers or religious priests. Some join a secular institute. Others remain single and make profession to God through the local bishop and are known as consecrated virgins. May the light of Christ shine brightly through men and women who choose the consecrated life to live out their baptismal commitment, especially those who serve in the Diocese of Brooklyn now or who have been part of our history.. Arise Together in Christ is an international, diocesansponsored, parish-centered endeavor to renew and strengthen our faith, in which groups of 5-10 people meet for 6 weekly 1.5 hour sessions starting the week of February 12th, at mutually convenient times, to share personal faith experiences. Our groups are open to all including non parishioners. The main topic of discussion for Season 4 New Heart, New Spirit will be forgiveness today and in biblical times. Additional topics for sharing and discussion will be: temptation, transformation, cleansing, awakening, resurrection, and renewal. 3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY This note will touch upon several items: 1 We will open Catholic Schools Week during our 10:30 AM Family Mass this Sunday, January 28th. As noted elsewhere in the bulletin, immediately after that Mass there will an Open House from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM right next store at our aligned St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy (SJWCA). Under the very able leadership of principal Kathleen Schneck and Board of Directors Chairperson Patrick Collins, the faculty, staff, parent community and Board are doing many great things at SJWCA. Please visit to learn more about the programs and the tuition-assistance opportunities at this excellent Catholic pre-k, K and elementary school. 2 As is also noted elsewhere in this bulletin, Sunday s Open House will include the opportunity to visit our parish Religious Education program Office and Classroom located on the first floor of SJWCA and to meet our parish Coordinator of Religious Education Kathryn Sisto. Please remember that it is very important that children who do not attend Catholic School attend parish religious education classes every year from grades 1 through 8. 3 As reported in last week s bulletin, the Brooklyn Diocese is conducting Inquiry Sessions for men interested in the Permanent Diaconate on several dates from late January to mid-february. Contact me for more details. 4 Also as reported in last week s bulletin, the Diocese s Holy Spirit Institute is offering Information Sessions in late January for its excellent Lay Leadership (Volunteer Track and Professional Track) Programs. Please consider the following commentary on this Sunday s Gospel (mark 1:21-28): The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. Jesus was doing something different. His teaching was new, fresh, surprising. And just in case those who heard him doubted his legitimacy, Jesus proved his authority by more than words; he cast out evil spirits. When the people witnessed Jesus commanding even the unclean spirits and saw that these spirits obeyed him, they were amazed at this /new teaching with authority. What our Jewish ancestors experienced is recorded for us to bolster our own faith. Although we were not there to see these events unfold, if we mediate on the reality on today s Gospel story we will also be astonished and amazed. Jesus is more than a teacher. He is more than a kind man with an attractive philosophy. Jesus has power over the spiritual world! His authority over us is real. And he exercises his authentic authority for our own good. He has the power to do away with evil and to set us free, both through his teachings passed on to us in the Bible and in the Church and through his action in our lives. We only need to follow the lead. (Liturgical Publications, Inc., Connect!, February 1st, 2015, p.5) Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and Candlemas Day Friday, February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and Candlemas Day, a day when, by tradition, candles are blessed for the home. We will be having a brief Blessing of the Candles immediately before the 9AM Mass and at the Latin Mass at 7PM. Please join us and bring along any candles you would like to have blessed. Blessing of Throats on Memorial of St. Blaise Saturday, February 3rd is the Optional Memorial of St. Blaise, the day for the blessing of throats. We will be blessing throats in Holy Name Church immediately after the 9AM Mass and after the 5:30PM Vigil Mass on Saturday evening.
