LATIN MASS FOR FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT This Sunday, December 3rd, is the first Sunday of Advent and Holy Name of Jesus Church is offering a Solemn High Mass at 5:00pm. The liturgy and choir are beautiful and edifying and for those who have never experienced a traditional mass in the Roman Rite, programs with full translations and cues for sitting/standing/kneeling will be distributed. It will be a wonderful way to prepare for the coming of our Lord. TO THE HOLY NAME FAMILY--THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Words can never describe how grateful we are and always will be for your prayers and support that the Holy Name Family gave to me, my wife Sari, my sister and all of our family members during the passing of my mom, Bernadine. For those of you who were able to attend the wake and/or the funeral Mass we are very grateful and for those who were unable to attend we are also very grateful for your prayers and expressions of love. My mom was a woman of Faith and Prayer, a wife, a mother a grandmother and a great grandmother and we are so grateful for all that she gave and "the seeds that she planted" in us during her 92 years that God gave her. 3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY Many thanks to Bishop James Massa for presiding and to Msgr. Curran and Fr. Austin for concelebrating at our Thanksgiving morning Mass. I and the entire parish have much to be thankful for in having these fine priests helping at Holy Name. Many thanks also to the volunteers (and especially to Sharon Smith) who helped prepare and serve as well as to all who helped with financial support for the excellent dinner served in Shepherds Hall on Thanksgiving Day. Advent begins this weekend with violet vestments and the first candle on the Advent wreath being lit, to be followed by one additional one each week for the four weeks of Advent. Friday of the coming week (December 8th) is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It is a Holy Day of Obligation and we ll have a 6:30 PM Vigil Mass on Thursday, December 7th as well as 9 AM and 7:30 PM Masses on Friday, Dec, 8th. Saturday, December 9th will be the day Holy Name of Jesus parish observes the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (officially December 12th, but at Holy Name each year observed on the Saturday before December 12th). Our Hispanic community plans carefully for this Feast. We will be having a Mass in Spanish at 2 PM (with Bishop Octavio Cisneros presiding), immediately followed by a fiesta (with music and great food) in Shepherds Hall. All are welcome. Other parish Advent devotions/events will be the arrival of the Bethlehem Peace Lamp at the 5:30 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, December 2nd; the Latin Mass at 5 PM on Sunday, December 3rd; the Healing Mass at 7 PM on Wednesday, December 6th; our parish Christmas Tree lighting outside the Rectory after the 5:30 PM Vigil Mass on Saturday, December 9th; an Advent Holy Hour including Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction at 7 PM on Monday, December 11th; Advent Lessons and Carols at 7 PM on Thursday, December 14th, and Weeknight Confessions from 6 PM to 8 PM on Monday, December 18th. There will be pulpit announcements and additional bulletin items about these events. Please consider the following commentary on this Sunday s Gospel (Mark 13:33-37): Advent is meant to serve as a wake-up call for those of us Christians who have a tendency to start drifting off after a while. We get into our routines, find the patterns that work for us, and then run the risk of just going through the motions. Maybe we say a morning prayer with consistency but have begun to forget to really think about the words. Perhaps we rouse ourselves to get to Mass on Sundays, but when we re there we let our minds daydream. Some of us might have made spiritual resolutions to overcome a bad habit or to begin some regular program of service, but instead of following through with the hard work of perseverance, we gave up the effort and fell back into our previous rut. Whatever the case, now is the time to shake ourselves free and to ask God to invigorate us once again. Now is the time to stop zoning out and start tuning in. Jesus message today has the intention of getting our attention. He s doing what he can; the rest is up to us. As Advent begins, we would do well to pause for a few moments and reflect. What might be preventing me from being fully awake to my faith? What activities preoccupy my time and my thoughts? What bad habits blur my spiritual vision? How could I really listen to the voice of the Lord this Advent season? (Connect!, Liturgical Publications, Inc., November 30, 2014, p. 5)

4 Food Pantry The Food Pantry will distribute food from the rectory basement on Dec. 16, and EITHER Dec. 30 OR Jan. 6 between 2 and 3 PM. At this time, rice, cans of tuna, and beans are needed. We give thanks to the parents, students, and teachers at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy for their recent donation to the pantry. We also thank the parents, students, and teachers at PK 280 for their recent visits to the food pantry to see what we do and for their food donations. For our departed loved ones. We ask your prayers for those of our community who have gone before us into the fullness of life and also for those they have left behind especially Anna Ventrice, Karl Healy, John (Moe) Maloney, and Colleen McGovern. Please remember those enrolled in our Purgatorial Society on Sundays at 7:30am, especially Phyllis Jean Zanghi, Catherine Gotsopolous, Elizabeth Joan McArdle, and Michael O Hara. Healing Mass Holy Name will be having a Healing Mass on Wednesday, December 6th at 7:00pm with Msgr. Joe Malagreca, Pastor of Holy Cross Church, as celebrant assisted by our own Deacon Michael Saez.
