2 May 21, Sunday of Easter th We join the entire Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens in thanking God for the life of and praying for the repose of the soul of our Bishop Emeritus Thomas V. Daily who passed away early Monday, May 15th, at the age of 89. He was a fine priest and bishop who served the people of our diocese well. ASCENSCION THURSDAY Thursday, May 25th is Ascension Thursday, a Holy Day of Obligation. To facilitate fulfilling the obligation to attend Mass, we will be having a Vigil Mass on Wednesday, May 24th, at 6:30 pm (for those who might want to attend Mass on the way home from work), a 9 AM Mass on Thursday morning, and another Mass at 7:30 pm on Thursday evening, May 25th (for those for whom a later Mass is more convenient). MASS OF THANKSGIVING AND RECEPTION FOR DEACON MICHAEL SAEZ On Saturday, May 27th, our own Michael Saez will be ordained a permanent Deacon. Michael will assist as a Deacon for the first time in Holy Name Church at the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, May 28th. This will be both a Sunday Mass and a Mass of Thanksgiving for Mike's ordination. There will be a reception in Shepherds Hall beginning immediately after the 9:00 AM Mass and continuing after the 10:30 and 12 Noon Masses. Please join us at the 9 AM Mass if you can and at the reception at any point during the morning and early afternoon in Shepherds Hall to congratulate Deacon Mike. 3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY 1 - This past Sunday was Mother s Day. At each of the Masses, we offered a special blessing (and some small tokens of recognition and appreciation) for mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and all women helping in the mother s role in today s complex society. I ll repeat those sentiments here, fully aware of how important mothers and those helping mothers are in keeping the faith alive in their families. 2 This week marks the third anniversary of the Re-dedication Mass held to celebrate the completion of the beautiful restoration of Holy Name of Jesus Church. The passage of time has not lessoned our appreciation of, and our thanks to God for, all the hard work and generous giving that went into providing our parish with such a magnificent worship space for prayer and the celebration of our liturgies. May God continue to bless all those involved and their loved ones. 3 - Mass times for Ascension Thursday are: 6:30PM Vigil Mass on Wednesday, May 24th; Morning and 7:30PM Evening Masses on Thursday, May 25th. 4 - From Friday, May 26th through Saturday, June 3rd (the nine days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost), we will praying a simple Pentecost Novena. The Pentecost Novena is modeled after the First of All Novenas, which took place (as described in Chapter 1, Verse 14 of the Acts of the Apostles) when the Apostles, Our Blessed Mother Mary, and other disciples devoted themselves to prayer from the first Ascension Thursday until the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. At Holy Name of Jesus parish we will simply recite the Come Holy Spirit prayer plus one Our Father, One Hail Mary, and one Glory Be, after Communion at each of our 9 AM weekday morning Masses (and at the 7:30 AM Mass on Sunday morning, May 28th). During this novena we will be asking especially for the graces of the Holy Spirit for the spiritual and temporal well-being of the parish. If you can t pray with us at those Masses, please consider praying the brief Come Holy Spirit prayer privately each day from May 26th through June 3rd for those intentions. There are a few variations to the prayer. The version we will be using is: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: O God, who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in the same Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His Consolation, through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen. 5 - Please see information elsewhere in this bulletin about our parish Religious Education Program and our affiliated St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy. 4 Registration for Religious Education Classes Registration for the Religious Education Program has begun. If your child is in grades 1-8 and they are attending a public or a non-catholic private school they should be attending religious education classes to help them grow in their faith and to prepare them to receive their sacraments. Holy Name s Catechism program has as long and as deep a history as our parish itself. Our goal is to create an environment of classroom learning and faith experiences that educates our school age children about Jesus and the Catholic faith. Important to that mission is preparing our children to receive the sacraments of Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Our program tenants are Faith, Fun and Fellowship. We are blessed with wonderful Catechists, Parish Clergy and lay staff who are dedicated to our children s development as faithful Catholics. Registration forms are available in the back of Church, on the Holy Name website or by contacting Kathryn Sisto, Coordinator of Religious Education at hnjreligioused@gmail.com or Registration forms along with a copy of your child s birth and baptismal certificates should be dropped off with Kathryn Sisto as soon as they are filled out. Classes will begin in September. Re-registration has also begun for our current students.
