3 A Note from Fr. Larry I have five items to report on this week: 1 - We were blessed with not one but two weddings in our beautifully restored Holy Name Church on the Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend. I m sure concern about the progress of Tropical Storm Hermine made everyone involved keep an ear to the radio and an eye on the clock as the weddings drew closer; but both couples were blessed with sunny, cool weather. Our congratulations again to Rebecca Rice and Vincent Chiusano and to Melinda Algarin and Jiancarlos Noboa as they begin their married lives. 2 - Concerning the weddings, a special word of thanks to the volunteers (who prefer to remain nameless) who did such a great job (on Labor Day weekend!) of cleaning and preparing the church for each of the weddings. Theirs is a very important ministry and they can always use some extra help. They gather in the Church after the 9 AM Mass each Saturday morning, and are very flexible as to the amount of time any helper can give. 3 - I m writing this note on Wednesday, September 7th, the first day of school for our closely-aligned St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy (SJWCA). I was able to visit briefly with several of the returning classes this morning to help prepare for this Friday s 9 AM Mass for the opening of the school year. We pray for the graces of the Holy Spirit and the protective intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph the Worker so that SJWCA s students, faculty and staff may have a year that is safe and enriching both academically and spiritually. 4 - This will be our first sign-up weekend for the ARISE Together in Christ program that we will be conducting in HNJ parish during October and November. Our ARISE Leadership Team has worked very hard throughout the spring and summer to bring the program to this point. Participation is not burdensome, and can greatly benefit your and the parish s spiritual life. Please sign-up if you can. 5 - This Sunday, September 11th, will be the 15th Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks of 9/11/2001. Members of the New York City Fire Department will be present at our scheduled 12 Noon Mass this Sunday which will include some special remembrances of that sad day fifteen years ago. More will be said about this on Sunday but I wanted to close this note with the words (and especially the words of hope in the last two phrases) of the first verse of the hymn Christ in the Rubble by Benedictine Sister Genevieve Close (copyrighted in 2001 by the Benedictine Nuns of the Abbey of St Walburga): O Christ, beneath the fallen stones, nailed fast to twisted bars of steel, And slain in flesh and blood and bones, pierced by the fear all mortals feel: Arise from ash and dust and death, And breath into crushed hearts new breath. 24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today, on the anniversary of the 9/11 tragedies in our city and nation, we find readings about God s mercy. These are not easy to listen to, after such hurt and loss, but we are still on the journey of learning God s ways. In the First Reading, the Israelites have melted metal into a statue of a calf, declaring that this is an image of a god who brought them out of Egypt. Consequently, God is perceived to be angry at the people, since they are not true to their relationship with Him. God says to Moses, They re hopeless,, I ought to destroy them! He wants Moses to see how shameful their actions are. Moses entreats the Lord to be forgiving by reminding God of the pleasing history of the Israelites. The Responsorial Psalm asks God In the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. As in the Gospel which follows, we hear the determined refrain, I will rise and go to my father. How resolved are we to turn to our loving Father and to learn about forgiveness? God desires that no one be lost. With difficult people in our family and community, with people who have hurt us, this is not easy. But, if God is so compassionate and loving with us, then as faithful disciples of Jesus we too must risk being so with others. In the Second Reading,. Paul explains that he once was a persecutor of God s people, not glossing over his own evil. Paul says that he obtained mercy because God could see the man Paul could become. When we look at someone s sinful conduct, we do not always see the whole person. There is what he was in the past, the small boy his mother loved, for example, or what he could become. Like the Lord in these Readings, we need to have mercy on him. We may not be as dramatic as Paul, going from foremost sinner to famous preacher, but we all have times when we need forgiveness from others, from ourselves and from God. Even after being abrupt with others, selfish, or judgmental, we can practice God s ways better. How can we help others, our church, our community, our nation to forgive and to move closer to God? At times, many of us feel like lost souls. This Sunday s Gospel tells the story of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. Like, the shepherd who found his missing sheep, the woman who found her lost coin and the father who saw his son walking across the field coming back to him, God bursts with joy when someone who has been lost is found. There are many people who see no value to their lives and have given up on themselves. We may be tempted to agree with them. They may have hurt us and the people we love. The prodigal son in the Gospel is a great example of the kind of false worship which we saw in the First Reading. Leaving the shackles of home life, he chooses a life of dissipation, which he sees as freedom. Maybe we have an equivalent in our houses, cars, I-Phones, or earthly possessions which we cling to! But, it doesn t work. The defeated son crawls back home. We would have expected his father to say, Oh sure, now you turn up, thinking everything will be just like it used to be. But instead the father actually runs to meet his son, embracing him and preparing a jubilant feast. Did the young man get what he deserved? No. He got what his father offered him: forgiveness. God does not want to keep us from the things we are attracted to. He wants us to value them in due proportion. We all fail in this, like the prodigal and like the ancient Israelites. So Jesus pleads for us, even as Moses did for them, forever saying, Welcome. With Jesus, there are no lost souls.

4 In his book, The Church of Mercy, Pope Francis discusses the parable of the Prodigal Son. What can you do as part of the church of mercy, to show all people that they are the closest thing to God s heart? Maybe someone among us here is thinking, My sin is so great, I am as far from God as the younger son in the parable; my unbelief is like that of Thomas...But God is indeed waiting for you; he asks of you only the courage to go to him. How many times in my pastoral ministry have I heard it said, Father, I have many sins? And I have always pleaded, Don't be afraid, go to him, he is waiting for you, he will take care of everything. We hear many offers from the world around us; but let us take up God's offer instead: his is a caress of love. For God, we are not numbers, we are important; indeed we are the most important thing to him. Even if we are sinners, we are what is closest to his heart.
