Divine Mercy Sunday Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, a day of great grace, as described in more detail in the full-page insert included in last week s bulletin. Today we will have the Divine Mercy Image on display at all of our Masses. At 3:00PM (the hour of Divine Mercy) we will have a Divine Mercy Holy Hour in the Church that will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the prayers (Our Father, Apostles Creed, and Hail Mary for the Intentions of the Pope) necessary for the Plenary Indulgence available that day, Benediction and closing with Bishop DiMarzio s Prayer for the current Year of Vocations. Please join us for our 3:00PM Divine Mercy Holy Hour. Gloria s Thank You Recently, Gloria Bischoff left Smith Duffy Funeral Home to work closer to home. Over the years Gloria has been instrumental in helping many of our parishioners in times of sorrow. On Sunday, April 15th, Gloria would like the members of our parish community to attend 12 noon Mass with her and then join her in Shepherds Hall for light refreshments. This is Gloria s way to say thank you to everyone who has touched her life in this parish. All are welcome to attend immediately following Mass.

3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum including Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil and the Masses of Easter Sunday morning brought out the very best from the people of Holy Name of Jesus parish. Over 1000 people attended our Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday Masses. During the Vigil Mass Trey Hundley received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation and George Louis McKinley entered into Full Communion with the Catholic Church and received the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. I thank Bishop Massa, Fr. Burns, and Msgr. Curran for their help with the many Masses and Liturgies of the Triduum. Ivonne Rojas, our Director of Music; Cheryl Jablow, who coordinated Church cleaning and decorating; Nick Sisto, the Master of Ceremonies for our Triduum liturgies; and Maria Camastro, who coordinated our Altar Servers (and organized the very successful Easter Egg Hunt after the 10:30 Family Mass!) each deserve special words of recognition; but there are dozens more volunteers (ministers, singers, church cleaners and decorators, etc., etc.,) and Rectory staff to whom I and the parish owe a tremendous debt of gratitude for the hours of work they put into giving the liturgies of Holy Week and the Triduum at Holy Name the solemnity and the beauty they deserve. And of course I thank everyone who has provided extra Easterrelated financial support to the parish. May the Risen Lord bless you and your loved ones always. This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Easter and the Sunday of Divine Mercy. Details of our parish observance of Divine Mercy Sunday appear elsewhere in this bulletin, but I ask you to consider the following excerpts from Pope Francis s homily for Divine Mercy Sunday in 2015: Saint John, who was in the Upper Room with the other disciples on the evening of the first day after the Sabbath, tells us that Jesus came and stood among them, and said, Peace be with you! and he showed them his hands and his side (Jn 20:19-20); he showed them his wounds. And in this way they realized that it was not an apparition: it was truly him, the Lord, and they were filled with joy. On the eighth day Jesus came once again into the Upper Room and showed his wounds to Thomas, so that he could touch them as he had wished to, in order to believe and thus become himself a witness to the Resurrection. To us also, on this Sunday which Saint John Paul II wished to dedicate to Divine Mercy, the Lord shows us, through the Gospel, his wounds. They are wounds of mercy. It is true: the wounds of Jesus are wounds of mercy. Jesus invites us to behold these wounds, to touch them as Thomas did, to heal our lack of belief. Above all, he invites us to enter into the mystery of these wounds, which is the mystery of his merciful love. Through these wounds, as in a light-filled opening, we can see the entire mystery of Christ and of God: his Passion, his earthly life filled with compassion for the weak and the sick his incarnation in the womb of Mary. And we can retrace the whole history of salvation: the prophecies especially about the Servant of the Lord, the Psalms, the Law and the Covenant; to the liberation from Egypt, to the first Passover and to the blood of the slaughtered lambs; and again from the Patriarchs to Abraham, and then all the way back to Abel, whose blood cried out from the earth. All of this we can see in the wounds of Jesus, crucified and risen; with Mary, in her Magnificat, we can perceive that, His mercy extends from generation to generation (cf. Lk 1:50). Faced with the tragic events of human history we can feel crushed at times, asking ourselves, Why?. Humanity s evil can appear in the world like an abyss, a great void: empty of love, empty of goodness, empty of life. And so we ask: how can we fill this abyss? For us it is impossible; only God can fill this emptiness that evil brings to our hearts and to human history. It is Jesus, God made man, who died on the Cross and who fills the abyss of sin with the depth of his mercy.. Brothers and sisters, behold the way which God has opened for us to finally go out from our slavery to sin and death, and thus enter into the land of life and peace. Jesus, crucified and risen, is the way and his wounds are especially full of mercy.. Keeping our gaze on the wounds of the Risen Jesus, we can sing with the Church: His love endures forever (Ps 117:2); eternal is his mercy. And with these words impressed on our hearts, let us go forth along the paths of history, led by the hand of our Lord and Saviour, our life and our hope.
