3 A Note from Fr. Larry: This note will be short but it contains some important information about the Sacrament of Matrimony. Our Gospel this week is St. John s account of the miracle of Jesus changing water into wine at the Wedding Feast of Cana, an event in Scripture that emphasizes the importance Christ placed on marriage not merely as a social institution but as a sacrament. Valid Catholic marriages are tremendous sources of grace to help carry couples through the challenges that all marriages face. Valid Catholic marriages are powerful examples that parents can offer their children to encourage their children to enter into valid Catholic marriages of their own. The Church offers two important processes to help couples enter into valid Catholic marriages. The first is called convalidation. This is the process that enables couples who have been married civilly, but not in a valid Catholic wedding, to have their marriage convalidated (i.e., recognized as valid) by the Church. The second process is the annulment process. There are many aspects of the annulment process that are beyond the scope of this brief note. The aspect that I want to focus on is that, if a Catholic who was previously married to some other person in a Catholic marriage that ended in a civil divorce, and the Catholic now wishes to enter into a Catholic marriage with another person, the annulment process offers the possibility of the Church examining the first Catholic marriage to determine if it can be annulled (i.e., determined to not have been valid), and thereby no longer be a bar to a valid Catholic marriage. At the direction of Pope Francis during this Year of Mercy, the Church has streamlined and eliminated fees for the annulment process. Especially during this Year of Mercy the Church wants to offer assistance to all Catholics in resolving marriage problems or issues. These frequently are complex matters, but there may well be solutions that are neither difficult nor costly. As I said above, this is not the place for a detailed discussion. However, if anyone you know is interested in addressing marriage issues further, please encourage them to contact their own parish priests or me. If we cannot help them at the parish level, we can refer them to experts within the Church for more in-depth assistance. 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time The First Reading from Isaiah uses intimate imagery to describe the relationship between God and His people. Imagine going from desolate and forsaken to my delight and espoused? How much God loves us! The Psalm invites us to sing about the wonderful things that God does for us and to proclaim what the Lord can do. In the Second Reading, we are reminded that the Lord makes himself known in each one of us, through gifts of the Spirit. We are not all the same, but we have the same Lord. Some people are like Van Gogh or Bach, some like Melinda Gates or Mother Teresa. Some have the gift of making us laugh while others lead us to more profound thoughts. Some people heal others by their kindness or wisdom. Some have extreme patience while some of us are quick-witted and act on the spot. Do we use the talents which the Lord has given us? Do we encourage diversity of expression or are we more comfortable with people just like ourselves? Can we tell someone today how much we appreciate their gifts and uniqueness? Though we have started Year C which focuses on Luke s Gospel, we take a short detour here to look at the first of only 7 miracles in John s Gospel, the wedding at Cana. This sets the stage for Jesus beginning his public life. Mary has great concern for the newlyweds wine shortage problem. These weddings lasted a week! Surprisingly, when his own mother said, They have no wine, Jesus replied, How does your concern affect me? Was this a rude answer? Why did he say it? In spite of his response, Mary trusted that he would solve the problem. How would we rate our trust when we go to God with our concerns? Are we ready for new beginnings? According to Pope Francis, Mary teaches us when she tells the servers to Do whatever he tells you. Mary approaches Jesus with confidence. She prays. She does not go to the steward, she immediately tells her Son of the newlyweds problem. The response she receives seems disheartening: What does it have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come (v. 4). But she nonetheless places the problem in God s hands. Her concern to meet the needs of others hastens Jesus hour. (Evangelii Gaudium, 286). She teaches us to put our families in God s hands, to pray, to kindle the hope which shows us that our concerns are also God s concerns. Our readings today are filled with hope. Our land is indeed desolate: toxins are in the air, water and soil. The land is forsaken because of the tensions and the tragedies of sin, and many of the people who live on the land are forsaken. To put it in terms of today s Gospel, the wine has run out and the party seems to be over. But, it does not have to be that way. The people can be called My Delight, and your land Espoused. There is still choice wine left to be experienced: the party does not have to end. Let us be positive and hopeful. We can sing to the Lord a new song. If we Do whatever He tells you, we will help to make our world a better place.

4 Memorials Faced with the overwhelming impact of Roe v.wade, many of us maybe even most flee from the facts. We deny that the living human embryo is truly or fully human life; or we proclaim uncertainty about the facts of human biology; or we proclaim moral agnosticism about the propriety of imposing our views on others; or we throw up our hands and give up because moral opposition to an entrenched pervasive social practice is not worth the effort, discomfort, and social costs. The one position not on the table- the one possibility too hard to look at is that abortion is a grave moral wrong on a par with the greatest moral atrocities of all time and that we passively, almost willingly, accept it as such. (Law professor Michael Stokes Paulsen in NRL News 1/16/14) An Altar Cloth, handmade by Nick Sisto, Sr. before he passed away, has been donated this week in his memory by his wife, Antoinette.. The Hosts are being donated this week in memory of Joan Hardy by her loving family. The Wine is being donated this week in memory of Joan Hardy by her loving family.
