3 assuming our humanity The Word of God hands it over to us and we can invoke it: "Jesus," "YHWH saves." The name "Jesus" contains all: God and man and the whole economy Due to our bulletin company s holiday printing th schedule I m writing this note on Friday, December 28 but of creation and salvation. To pray "Jesus" is to invoke him and to call him within us. His name is the only one that you will only be reading it during the weekend of January th th contains the presence it signifies. Jesus is the Risen One, 5 /6, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. and whoever invokes the name of Jesus is welcoming the 1 First and foremost: A Happy and Blessed New Son of God who loved him and who gave himself up for Year to all! him. A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY 2 - Some further information about our 12 Noon Mass of Thanksgiving and Parishioner Appreciation Reception on Sunday, January 13, 2019): During the pulpit announcements at the Christmas Masses I tried to thank all of the groups and all of the people who do so much (both spiritually and temporally) to help Holy Name of Jesus parish not just during Christmas but also throughout the year. The January 13th Parishioner Appreciation Reception is another effort to express our thanks. During the days immediately following Christmas we worked hard to get invitations our in the mail and by via the leaders of various parish groups and organizations. We ve reached a lot of the parishioners, but especially because of the Holidays we almost surely have probably missed some. To address that likely possibility, we re including in this bulletin a copy of the Invitation we sent out. This Reception is essentially an Open House. All parishioners are welcome to attend. It will be catered and the food will begin being served about 1:30 PM. If you cannot be there at the beginning please join us when you can, even for a short stay. THE ONE THING WE ASK IS THAT YOU CALL THE RECTORY ( ) BY 4 PM ON MONDAY, JANUARY 7th to let us know you are coming so that we can make preparations. We hope to see you there. 3 - Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus: Thursday, January 3rd, was the Optional Memorial of the Most Holy of Jesus, which here in Holy Name parish we celebrated as our titular Feast Day. We ll observe it also (along with the Solemnity of the Epiphany) at our Masses this weekend. Please consider the following excerpt from The Catechism of the Catholic Church (Paragraph No. 2666) concerning the spirituality of the devotion to the Holy Name: But the one name that contains everything is the one that the Son of God received in his incarnation: JESUS. Please consider the following commentary on this Sunday s Readings Isaiah 60: 1-6; Ephesians 3: 2-3a; 5-6; Matthew 2: 1-12): Epiphany is one of the oldest feasts of the Christian calendar, and, as its name suggests, it is a celebration of the manifestation of Christ to the world. The Greek epiphaneia means manifestation, especially as it relates to the manifestation of a deity. Today s First Reading is about the reestablishment of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. The prophet issues a double imperative. He tells them to arise and then to allow their light to shine, because God s glory has dawned on them and radiates forth in the city to such an extent that they become the light to the nations. The Hebrew word kabowd, translated here as glory, is also used to describe God s presence in the Holy of Holies. During the exile, God s glory left the Temple, but now it will return in full radiance! Compare this song, to the Gospel that tells the story of the Magi who come from the East, perhaps Persia or Arabia, to seek out the newborn King of the Jews. Scholars of the esoteric sciences (for example, dream interpretation and astrology), these men also represent the Gentile nations who come to see this great king. However, this manifestation is also fraught with danger as we see in Herod s treacherous activity. The Magi s gifts of gold and frankincense are also mentioned in today s First Reading, but myrrh is a strange gift to give a mother and baby, since it was used as a painkiller and for burial. Is it an omen of the future? In the Second Reading, we are told that God planned from the beginning that the nations (Greek ethne, also translated Gentiles ) would be coheirs of the one body in Christ. Thus, we celebrate the manifestation of Christ to
